Here are a few things you can expect:
- We typically receive 2-3 blog posts per week here at GLA Headquarters from our program staff and students, so please don’t be alarmed if you don’t see a blog post daily – that’s totally normal.
- Blog updates sent on weekends may not be posted until Monday.
- Due to many factors, including but not limited to internet accessibility, photos may not always be available to post onto the blog. Sometimes onsite program staff are only able to send text back to Headquarters, where our team updates the blog.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 6
We are so excited to have arrived for our first night of camping at Costanoa!
This morning we picked up all 18 students and 3 chaperones at the San Francisco airport, and headed straight to half moon bay for a much needed pizza and salad lunch 🍕🥗
When we arrived at camp a few hours later, the weather was chilly, but the view of the ocean from our campsite was beautiful! Students competed in a “set up camp” challenge with their tent groups, including a get-to-know you activity and a race to set up their tents, sleeping bags, and bags the fastest. It was many people’s first time setting up a tent, but with grit and a little bit of help, they got it finished – even with the added challenge of the wind!
Next we split into job squads – fire-making squad, cooking squad, and cleaning squad – and got to work! The cooking squad prepared a delicious dinner of burgers, hot dogs, and watermelon for all of us to enjoy. We finished the night around the campfire, reflecting on our day, sharing our excitement and nerves for what’s to come, coming up with community agreements for our time together, making s’mores, and singing happy birthday to our friend Belen!
Tomorrow, we head off to the redwoods for a day of hiking and adventure. We can’t wait to get to know each other better and see what we learn in the days to come.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 7
Today, we started our day with a breakfast of cereal and bagels with hot chocolate. After that we did health checks which was checking in with our GLA staff about how we felt about the trip so far. After we checked in with our GLA staff we made our lunches, got into the cars and headed to the redwood hike. During the hike we learned how to identify poison oak and the different plants around the park, and most importantly, the different types of redwood trees around the park. Then we had lunch next to a river and played for some time before we went on our final trail as we headed to the visitor center and the gift shop before we left. We later headed to get ice cream before we went back to camp . When we got to camp we had free time and then we ate delicious burritos for dinner. Overall, the day was filled with fun and adventure. We learned new things and had a great time.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 8
Today was a challenging but fun day. When we woke up we were very very cold. When we went stepped out of our tent it got even more cold, but we still chose to continue the day. After breakfast we hopped in the car and enjoyed the amazing view. When we arrived to kayak, we put some interesting suits. We kayaked in the Slough, and also learned interesting facts about sea otters and seals. We saw otters, seals, birds, and sea lions. After we enjoyed the kayak experience we went to the beach and for 2 hours we enjoyed being kids. In our free time back at camp we went to see the goats.
After we gathered together, we practiced making a fire. We learned very useful techniques and we learned very quickly. For dinner we had spaghetti, meatballs, and sausages. We ate and we had an amazing last night enjoying s’mores at the campfire.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 9
Today was our last morning at camp, and our last full day together! While we’re happy to be out of the cold, we will also miss our tents and our campground.
We started this morning with camping breakfast sandwiches, then got to work tearing down our tents and packing everything up. Before saying goodbye to our campsite, we participated in a gratitude reflection where we each spread ourselves around the campground and said thank you to the nature around us, to our community, or to ourselves. Then we got back in our vans and hit the road.
Once we arrived at the hotel, we checked in and unpacked in our rooms, then participated in an “Appreciation Circle” activity outside by the water. This activity was an opportunity for us to anonymously tap the shoulders of our friends and teachers who made a difference for us during this trip, and also to receive taps for people who we had impacted on this trip. The activity made us feel special, and helped us reflect on our leadership and the ways that we impact the people around us.
Finally, we spent the rest of the day in San Francisco at Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf! We took the BART train and an old-fashioned cable car to get to the city, and explored lots of tourist shops and fun spots. We saw sea lions hanging out on the docks and spotted the Golden Gate Bridge off in the distance. Next had some delicious dinner at a famous San Francisco restaurant called Boudin, and made our way back to our hotel. The time in the city was so much fun – it was the perfect way to end our trip! Tonight we are excited for comfy beds and warmth, and tomorrow we head home! This trip has been an amazing experience and it has been so fun getting to know new people and try new things. We hope to get to travel again together in the future!
