Mambo! (Poa!)
We hope you are all adjusted to life back home but wanted to take a moment and remind you of all the fun you had in Tanzania this past summer. Our two weeks started with a town trip and host family visits where you got to see the Rau community and some of you even had a dance party with your host family that lasted all the way back to home base.
Then we all tried our hands in Tanzanian art where we created batiks and other paintings featuring Maasai people, safari animals, or beautiful Kilimanjaro landscapes. A highlight for many of us was the Kili Wizard dance group. We were in awe watching them dance and then got to try our hand in Tanzanian dance. Our dance moves came in handy for our shake-off that happened on the last night of the program!
Another big highlight was our safari where we saw a black rhino and so many lions, male and female. We also saw elephants, zebras, warthogs, gazelles, water buffalo, wildebeast, and an array of cool birds! Though we had some early mornings and long drives, we all loved the incredible views we saw and the time we spent in the bush.
Many of you were inspired by our trip to the orphanage and by Julien’s talk (a former GLA student who is working in the orphanage now). We hope those of you who wanted to keep in touch with Julien and Mama Faraji have managed to do that and maybe you are even planning a fundraiser for the kids!
Our last fully day was a hike around Kilimanjaro where many of us swam in the freezing cold water of the Kili region. But the hike was only preparation for an amazing night feast, an incredible shake-off party, and a meaningful, emotional bonfire celebration. We will always remember the sites we saw, the people we met, and the food we ate (shout out to Mama D!) but goodbye is not forever, you are always welcome back in Tanzania. Keep in touch and sending you lots of love!
