Time Capsule – Tanzania – Children’s Education in Action – August 3 – August 16, 2018

Mambo students!

Can you believe it’s been so long since we were all stuffing our faces with Mama D’s delicious
guac, Christmas rice and fried chicken?! We know you have definitely missed the amazing kids
at Mnini and Matoli Primary School. The hard work and dedication you showed towards the
students and put into teaching English in your classes is evident in the songs they still sing
(Way oh, Way oh!) and all the items and money you donated…thank you for being so generous!

All your hard work during physical service will make an impact on Mnini and Matoli schools for
decades to come. The bright blue windows, doors, and new floors have definitely brightened up
the area and has created a welcoming learning environment.

We still think about the time we were able to witness a humongous elephant cross the road in
front of our jeeps at Tarangire, a true cat nap, all the gazelles, and probably the most wild lunch
view any of us have ever had. We know that the weekend made a lasting impression on many
of you, and we are so happy we were able to share such a cool experience with so many
different animals with you all!

It was great to be immersed in the culture with the Chagga tribe and Kill Wizard group, to
making coffee, and hearing from so many incredible speakers. Discovering our art skills and
learning more about each other through Batik, leadership activities, and dancing was so much
fun! Did you get your Batik framed yet?!

We truly were an adventurous group. The two days of safari and the hike around the base of
Kilimanjaro hopefully helped grow your appreciation for the natural wonders of Tanzania and the
great outdoors. Even the freezing mountain river we swam in was appreciated after the shock
of the cold water wore off. Kudos to those that made the plunge!

We hope that you still think on your time in Tanzania fondly and have lots of happy memories to
look back on. We could tell you all created deep and meaningful connections with each other.
We hope you continue to stay in contact with one another and we look forward to see how you
will continue to be the changɘ.
Thank you, teachers.

Your mentors,
Racquel Maronde, Andie Gemme, James Davis

Mambo students!

Can you believe it’s been so long since we were all stuffing our faces with Mama D’s delicious guac, Christmas rice and fried chicken?! We know you have definitely missed the amazing kids at Moshi Primary. The hard work and dedication you showed towards the students and put into teaching English in your classes is evident in the songs they still sing and the soccer balls they still use.

All your hard work during physical service will make an impact on Moshi Primary school for decades to come. The bright blue windows and doors and new floors have definitely brightened up the area and has created a welcoming learning environment.

We still think about the time we were able to catch sight of two cheetahs on top of a hill in Tarangire, a true cat nap, and everyone battling through dehydration and too much fun. We know that the weekend made a lasting impression on many of you, and we are so happy we were able to share such a cool experience with so many different animals with you all!

It was great to be immersed in the culture with the Chagga tribe and Kill Wizard group, to making coffee, and hearing from so many incredible speakers. Discovering our art skills and learning more about each other through Batik, writing poems, and dancing was so much fun! Did you get your Batik framed yet?!

We hope that you still think about your time in Tanzania fondly and have lots of happy memories to look back on. As participants in the first ever S.P.A.C.E. J.A.M., we hope you had as much fun as we did, even though there were some sacrifices that included Andie’s water bottle. #NeverForget.

Remember to stay loose and funky.

Time Capsule – Tanzania – Children’s Education in Action – June 15 – June 28, 2018

Mambo students!

Can you believe it’s been so long since we were all stuffing our faces with Mama D’s delicious guac, Christmas rice and fried chicken?! Angel is currently making us all giggle with her cute antics, and she says she misses you all and is blowing you all a kiss west…CATCH IT! We know you have definitely missed the amazing kids at Moshi Primary. The hard work you put into teaching English in your classes is evident in the songs they still sing and their excitement for future groups.

All your hard work during physical service will make an impact on Moshi Primary school for decades to come. The bright blue windows and doors and new floors have definitely brightened up the area and has created a welcoming learning environment.

We still think about the time a lion almost climbed into car 3 in Ngorongoro Crater and the monkeys with their very distinct and colored…ahem…assets…
We know you all had a good time in your safari cars, even though the issues with car 2 got on all our nerves. At least the car breaking down led to a hilarious encounter with a bathroom tree and a Maasai tribe!

Hopefully you have all learned the coveted carrot butter sandwich recipe!

Remember to stay loose and funky.

Time Capsule – South Africa – Social Change Project – July 8 – July 28, 2018

Wow! It seems like just the other day we were preparing for our first full day of leadership lessons, activities and meals (and plenty of snacks) at the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg. While our 21 days together may have flown by, the memories we created will be everlasting. At this point you’re probably back in school or starting your first year in college but we wanted you to know that we are still thinking about each of you and the time we shared in South Africa.

You should feel confident that you truly made a lasting impact this summer. Your one-on-one attention to the students at Honey Bee’s has surely helped prepare the learners for success. Your patience, passion and caring nature was evident each day we spent alongside those sweet faces. You will be remembered not only by our beautiful garden mural but by the songs, dances, crafts, lessons and silent cheers we taught them. We imagine that Jayden, Dean and Witness are still stomping around in the sand singing the Penguin Song (channeling their inner Vishnu)!

Not only did we learn how to lead in the classroom but we were fortunate to learn more about great leaders in the past and present that are changing the lives of those around them. Through our tour around Soweto, spending time at Robben Island and serving on Mandela Day we learned about the legacy of Nelson Mandela. With our discussion at Nude Foods and samples of Olive Bread, we learned more about how each of us can take an issue that’s important and create real change in our community. Partnering with the SAVE Foundation and hearing from Carla taught us all about the ins and outs of running a non-public organization.

We can’t forget to mention all of the fun we had together! Each of you brought your own uniqueness to our trip making this summer so amazing. We experienced South African culture by preparing a meal at Bo-Kaap, touring around Cape Point by boat, bike and foot, shopping at Green Market and the V&A Waterfront, hiking Lions Head and Table Mountain, visiting Thali Thali and learning more about the San People and District 6.

We worked really hard and also had a blast together. Whether it was playing games at night, eating Colls delicious food, singing songs in a circle or exploring new places together, it was that much fun because we were able to share it with all of you—the 2018 South African Social Change group! Thanks for bringing your positivity, passion, leadership, laughter and creativity every day! We will never forget the memories we made in such an amazing country!

Some Special Moments from our trip:

Vishnu teaching Ryan Yap, Carson and Okome a history lesson on the Cold War.

Emerson leading an ab workout upstairs with Sage, Sara, Ananya and Ryan Durbin!

Boating, biking (in the rain) and hiking around Cape Point (Look at all those chickens)

Eating tons of snacks with Lucy, Silvia and Pilar (remember those 5+ cinnamon rolls)

Devouring lots and lots of Biltong and asking to go to the mall to buy more!

Intense late night games of Monopoly!

Cheers,
Brianne and the South African Team
