FIJI – Marine Conservation Expedition – June 18 – July 1, 2019

Time Capsule

Bula!!!

It feels like just yesterday that all of us were sitting at the blue lagoon and sipping on coconuts (free of plastic straws of course). The coral that we planted is thriving right of Nanuya island. It now provides a safe ecosystem to some of the many important species we surveyed and learnt about. Just think of those cute little surgeon fish eating algae off our coral and parrot fish darting past.

The area we snorlekeled and kayaked through is now a marine protected area and the local community has used our presentations to further their conservation work. The 1440 mangrove propugules are all thriving, providing important ecosystem services which help coral reefs. Captain Bill is still boating around challenging any who dare to a fierce game of volleyball. He remembers fondly our trip to the Sea Cave and the beauty of our voices as they echoed through the cave.

The murals we painted at the local Fijian school are still there, brightening students learning environment and reminding the kids of the day you all came and repeatedly fell over playing duck duck goose.

The international staff Kelsey, Elle, Sam and Maria all miss you and hope you took something away from our night time activities and reducing plastic waste, shark conservation and how to be an activist. We remember fondly our time spent learning about conservation, the fun had in mentor groups and the times just spent relaxing on our little private beach.

We hope you took away amazing experiences, memories and friendships from our 2 weeks together in Fiji. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours and hope to run into you again

After an early start all the students arrived bright eyed and bushy-tailed at Nadi Airport, despite a few lost bags there were big Bula smiles all around as we all headed back to Nadi Bay Resort to be greeted with a traditional Fijian welcome ceremony. The students were introduced over the kava bowl, kava is a ceremonial drink made from the root of a local pepper plant which some of the brave staff tried in order to respect locals customs.

After being shown to their rooms and given a chance to settle in and get to know their fellow roomates we covered a few basic housekeeping rules and health checks in order to ensure everyone is fit and healthy for some serious conservation work out in the field.

The afternoon was spent at Wailoaloa beach, named after the colour of its black, organic-rich sand. Everyone had huge amounts of fun playing games, paddling in the warm tropical water and generally hanging-out and enjoying the beautiful Fijian weather with a backdrop of swaying palms. Dinner was a traditional Fijian ‘lovo’, where meat and vegetables are cooked in the ground over baking hot stones, a technique that has remained unchanged for centuries.

The day was topped off with a fantastic Polynesian dance troupe who lit up the resort with their breath-taking fire dancing. Students were more than happy to head to bed early to catch-up on some much needed sleep in eager anticipation for tomorrow’s activities!

Wednesday June 19, 2019

First day for the students waking up to a beautiful Fijian sunrise started with a presentation on local culture, community values and Fijian history. On our way to eat a hearty lunch at the self-proclaimed ‘World’s Best Fish and Chip Restaurant’ we stopped to buy sulus – a traditional Fijian sarong integral to local custom and a necessary item for working in conservative communities.

Next up was a informative tour of the lush Gardens of the Sleeping Giant where students learnt about native Fijian plant and insect species. This was followed by a sweaty hike up to see a beautiful view out over Nadi to the ocean and the bay where the first settlers landed in Fiji. The students cooled off in the therapeutic thermal mud pools before heading home for a buffet dinner and well deserved rest!

Saturday June 22, 2019

The past couple of days has been crazy, it started with heading out to our idyllic home base paradise. After visiting our village friends in the local community who put on a traditional Fijian welcome kava ceremony called a ‘sevusevu’, we learnt about the threats of plastic to marine habitats and how to live more sustainable lives.

Students woke up to a delicious first breakfast on the island complete with a beautiful view over the reef. The first service day kicked off with an informative lecture about coral reef ecology, students then split and one group surveyed a newly established MPA (marine protected area) to look at its effectiveness whilst the other group helped to regenerate reefs lost from coastal development by building a coral nursery. The day ended perfectly with some local Fijian dancing and a delicious meal. After an intensive service day in the water we enjoyed an adventure day snorkeling in a sacred cave occupied by a 10-headed snake god!

Sunday June 23 and Monday June 24, 2019

We spent a chilled Sunday enjoying a typical day at the beach. The day kicked off with an island-wide scavenger hunt which included a picturesque hike up a hill to enjoy the view. The aim of game was to be the first back to find all the clues and impress the island chief!

After a well-received BBQ on the beach which included all-American hot dogs with a tropical twist student chilled out beach volleyball, kayak games and a marine biology snorkel. Day 7 started with a lovely breakfast with a view, right after our mentor Elle gave an informative lecture about the threats of the Crown-of-Thorns to Fijian Marine Ecology, we kicked off our service work by monitoring and retrieving this pest species on the house reef with data submitted to international COTS monitoring programmes.

After lunch we split back into groups to continue surveying the reef and planting baby corals. After service we had a GLA ‘pulse check’ to make sure everyone was in tip-top shape and enjoying the programme whilst giving useful feedback about what can be improved going forward.

Tuesday June 25, 2019

Everyone woke up to a hot and humid morning after a rainy night. After a delicious breakfast, the students learned about mangroves from Gabbi, our local director. They then went on a nature walk where the students picked up mangrove babies to plant later. After a beachside lunch, the students had some down time before they headed over to the village.

Once in the village, the students started planting the mangrove babies into the mud. A few students had some miss steps and ended up taking an extra mud bath. In total the students planted 1446 baby mangroves. Afterwards, the students played volleyball on the beach before sitting down for some afternoon tea presented by the villagers.

Wednesday June 26, 2019

Wednesday morning kicked off with a windy breakfast on the terrace of pancakes, followed by a presentation about waste management! Students were pretty shocked to find how easy it is for western people to deal with their trash compared to how much of an issue it is for developing nations like Fiji with little or no municipal waste removal. After the presentation students prepped their class on Water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) ready to teach in a local primary school tomorrow.

After lunch students took a boat to a village called Matacau Levu where one group conducted household surveys finding out how community members dispose of their solid waste and greywater. The other group conducted a beach clean with a few little helpers from the village, the highlight of the day was definitely ‘Little Billy’, the adorable grandson of much loved GLA boat captain Bill. The women of the village made a delicious tea where everyone enjoyed stuffed roti, jan roll cakes and banana bread. We made our way back over chippy seas looking forward to an evening trivia activity focused on shark conservation.

Friday June 28, 2019

The last two days have been a blur! The GLA students spent the whole day yesterday at the local primary school. They presented to the kids on the importance of water converservation and how to properly wash their hands. The GLA students then painted murals and did other beautification projects around the school and played games with the children. It was so fun to be with the young kids all day and gain insight into another culture. The night ended with a barbaraur and a Polynesian dance performance at home base.

This morning started with the students having optional snorkel time or hula dancing lesson. For our final service project we traveled to the local village one last time to present to the villagers what we had learned and the data we had gathered. The students presentations were on community waste management, mangrove ecology, water conservation, the monitoring and removal of the crown of thorns starfish, and the reef check survey results. The students then had free time at home base to relax and enjoy the Fijian paradise.

Monday July 1, 2019

Well what a way to end a hugely successful trip, after an emotional goodbye song in Fijian sang by Nanuya staff the volunteers set sail on rough seas to Nadi, thankfully everyone spotted an inquisitive Manta Ray en route which more than made up for the queezy conditions!

The last day was spent souvenir shopping in Nadi where students bought a selection of traditional Fijian handicrafts from war clubs to Tapa bags. The afternoon was spent reflecting on the impact of our project and the students contributions to the everyday lives of Matacaulevu community members and the pristine reef habitats they depend on so closely. After some truly heartfelt goodbyes and exchanging of contact details the students arrived at the airport ready to return home.

FIJI – Children of the South Pacific – July 12 – August 1, 2019

Time Capsule Letter

a BIG BULA to everyone!

I can’t believe it has already been so long since our trip to Paradise. I can still remember the sound of the waves when lying in bed. Often I still think back to the school and the friendly children we all met and tutored. Those boat rides…. especially on those sunny days when the beautiful turquoise colors were so prominent in the ocean below us and the stars shining so bright for us.

You are probably back in school or starting college right about now, but I want you to know the lives you impacted and memories you created in the villages and for yourself will have a lasting impact for years to come.

Our time spent together here truly did have positive change for me too. You should all know you left Naviti Island and the villages a better place than when you came. The rain water tanks will provide clean drinking water for the communities in times of need and we can be so lucky that it rained so much in order to fill those tanks for the people in need. The Food Bank we helped setup for the community are thriving and the seedlings are growing well and obviously the watermelon and bean seeds planted is very likely by now bearing fruit. Be sure that Azea is monitoring and assisting with the food bank and that it will not go to waste or is by no means a project we worked on that will not be looked after.

Ahhh, the children in the school, I am sure they miss you all so much and they can all read that much better with your one-on-one assistance given. And just as important, the knowledge YOU gained on this trip we hope will serve you and the communities you go on the be in for the rest of your lives. We all know how precious clean drinking water is and the harm using plastic is to our environment and the place we all call home.

Another thing I can’t forget is how much fun we had together and the deep conversations that was part of our daily experiences. You all made this trip so much fun and I loved being around you all. We experienced many memorable moments, like the Fijian culture through Kava ceremonies, bula dances, mud bath, beautiful landscapes and those Manta Ray’s, oh those majestic creatures!

We worked really hard and had so much fun together, remember the night everyone (except me) jumped in the pool! I’ll cherish so many moments. You all made the trip so worthwhile! I want to thank each and every single one of you for making it all worth it! You guys rock! The second GLA Fiji 2019 group!

Do you remember the pledge, the groups OMG – “One Meaningful Goal” – that we created at the end of the session? We pledged to use reusable water bottles and to encourage our friends and family to do the same. It will not only save the environment from plastic but also save you so much money that you can put towards something meaningful. We would love to know how this is going!? Don’t forget about your individual OMG’s too!

Vinaka Vaka Levu to you all!
Rein!

We have all except for one arriving tommorow morning early, made it to paradise which is also called Fiji!

Today after we arrived and filled up on breakfast we did our swim test that we all passed. We played some name games, walked down to the beach where we had some more fun in the sun and enjoyed a beautiful sunset over the ocean!

From us all!

Saturday July 13, 2019

Hey parents,

We started the morning with a delicious breakfast, then met up to go over the code of conduct and went shopping for our sarongs that we’ll need to wear in the village. We all had out lunch at the best fish and chips restaurant in Fiji where after we left the tarred road for the informational talk and hike at the sleeping giant of which everyone enjoyed so much!

After that we all bathed ourselves in mud which has rejuvenating properties, played some fun games and almost all had some good massages.

All and all it was a fun day out!

Bula!

So today we went to an Indian cooking class and learned some interesting facts about the indo-fijian community in Fiji.

At the resort we enjoyed their pool that has a slide, played a quick round of mini golf, lounged in the hammocks and made use of their kayaks. The food that we helped prep was delicious and the people even friendlier.

After a full day at relax resort we arrived back at our homebase (form now) had some free time and had another delicious meal that was cooked in an underground oven(lovo). After dinner we were entertained by a group of fire dancers. Everyone had so much fun for our last night in Nadi. Tommorow we are leaving this island on a 3-4 hour boat ride to our homebase at an eco resort from which our service work will commence.

Bye for now.

Bula!!!

We started the day early and left from Nadi to head to our home base for the rest of the trip: the Yasawa islands. It was a three hour boat ride where we enjoyed the sea breeze on the front of the boat. When arriving to the island we were warmly welcomed by our new Fijian family! From snorkeling to dancing to listening to each other sing and play guitar. We welcome our experience on Yasawa with open arms and open hearts.

Hey mom and dad! Its Foster and Yoyo, hope all is well at the crib. We are having a blast in Fiji. Despite sleeping through breakfast we had a really good day. We began our first day of service with a warm welcome from the people of the villages we are serving at. We were so grateful to be welcomed into their community and take part in the cassava welcoming ceremony. After the ceremony we split up into our service groups, rainwater conservation and children education. In rainwater conservation we laid out the foundation for the water tank with the help of our lovely coordinator Jim. In children education we meet and read to the children of the primary school.

After an afternoon of serving our lovely Fijian community we returned to home base for some tea and quality bonding time. Before dinner we dug deep into analysis of our leadership skills and learned a lot about ourselves. After a delicious dinner we watched a fire show extravaganza, wow, on the beach provided by our hotel staff! Overall today was super fun. We are so excited to see what the next couple of weeks hold. We can not thank our parents enough for making this incredible experience possible. Miss you tons, see you soon!!

Wednesday July 17, 2019

Hey Parents,

Today, we dove into our first full day of service in our community here in Fiji. The rainwater harvesting group build a cement base while those working on education continued to work and read with the kids. We were able to get a lot of work done on our respective projects. After service, we all took a quick dip in the ocean, jumping of our boats and snorkeling. Some of us were even able to see an octopus! After a relaxing afternoon back at home base we ate a wonderful dinner and participated in a show put on by the staff here. We were all tired by the end of the day but proud of our work and in awe at another beautiful day in Fiji.

Bula! Today we had a blast continuing our project with the children and helping them read english. After reading and spelling with them we enjoyed playing games with them, getting to know them and their culture, and understanding life on the Fijian island. After our service, we headed back to the home base where we enjoyed tea time and each others company. We then did many leadership and team building activities to end the night before dinner!

Over the course of three days, full of hard work, companionship, and dedication, today we finally finished constructing our water harvesting tank. Which we are all so proud and grateful to have been apart of. Our hearts are warm to know that all the water tanks are being put to good use. After, we enjoyed and authentic lunch in the community and were attacked with hugs and kisses from the local children.

Bula Vinaka!!

Bula!!!!

Today was the first day everyone switched spots on the island to work on the previous projects the other group had done before. Team one (Gray, Aspen, Lela, Haley, Yoyo, Annemijn, Hannah, Ellie, and Lexi) went to build a water tank w/ a filter while the other team (Dunkin, Jessica, Foster, Lindsey, Schuyler, Ani, Jojo, Sammy, and Carmella) went to the school to tutor some students in their English via reading, writing, and spelling! After a couple of hours of freetime the two teams conjoined to play two truths and a lie, led by the two leaders of the day, Jojo and Gray.

We ended the day with a bonfire at the beach!

Talk to you guys tomorrow!

Saturday June 20, 2019

Hello to everyone back home!

Today we had a chill Saturday as we had the day off from service. A few of us went snorkeling in the morning and got to see a lot of really cool animals (especially the tiny jellyfish that stung us in the water)! The rest of us stayed back at home base and had the opportunity to learn a little bit of the Fijian language and culture, along with learning a few songs! Today was a relaxing, but fun day and we all really enjoyed it!

Sunday July 21, 2019

Bula! We had a great day today (no thanks to the wind.) We started off the day with a great breakfast and then we got our mentor groups! After some bonding and human knotting we played some fun Fijian games thanks to Mrs. Alliti! Then we got into a seriously heated debate which in the end we decided to agree to disagree! We’re off to end the night with movie night!

Bula!

Today we unfortunately couldn’t do service so we had another fun filled day at the resort. We started the day off with some good breakfast and then went on a nice hike (which was really steep and exhausting), but had two fantastic views! After the journey down we went to the beach and had some free time until lunch at around 12:00pm, which in Fijian time is actually 1:00pm. Later that afternoon, we did a fun activity that focused on loving who we are. After that we had some more free time until our amazing leadership scavenger hunt (arranged by Hanna, Duncan, Aspen, and Grey).

After a really fun scavenger hunt, we decided to watch the sunset. I personally, Hanna, attempted frisbee but every time I threw it it landed in the water. After that we had dinner, which was also very much on Fijian time, 8:00pm rather than 7:00pm. Dinner was a good chicken, potatoes, and pumpkin soup. Dessert was a coconut bar with chunky chocolate sauce. Finally, we were supposed to have a movie night but because of Fijian time dinner, it was too late and tomorrow we have to wake up early so we have to get some good sleep. Vinaka!

From Hanna: Mom, Dad, Harper, Gramma, Nana, and Fafa, I miss you so much but know I am having so much fun! This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience I will never forget!!! I love you guys! ❤️

From Duncan: I love you Mom, Grandma, Grandpa, Noah, and Cheri! Fiji is amazing and I can’t wait to share all about it when I get back. Say hi to Rocco and the girls for me! Miss you!

Tuesday July 23, 2019

Bula!!

In the morning we said our goodbyes and wished safe travels to our friend, Lexi, as she headed back home. After, the weather finally cleared up and allowed us to head back to service. Group 1 finished up the water tank and Group 2 had their second day at the school doing the one on one reading program. Then, we headed back to the base and played a capture the flag as a big group for the leader of the day activity (shout-out to Haley for getting run over). Finally, to top it all off we ate dinner and then watched Pitch Perfect with freshly stove popped popcorn and blankets!

Till next time,

Leaders of the day, Sammy and Ellie

Wednesday July 24, 2019

Bula!

Today we had a pretty good breakfast of eggs and pancakes! Unfortunately there was no cereal and very little fruit, but that’s okay! The two groups switched again today. Group 1 went back to education and continued to read with the kids, and also play some Uno. Group 2 went back to Somo somo and helped out with the food bank by planting long beans, cassava, and watermelon, as well as playing around with the local village kids again. Group 2 also had a delicious lunch made by the village women.

Then everyone headed back to the island and had some free time until the leader of the day’s game. In this game, people had to put random things, they brought to Fiji, in a bag. Then the whole group was separated into two groups and then Lela, Ani, and Hanna (the three leaders of the day) would announce some item and whichever team got the item to one of the three leaders first got a point. Then we had dinner, which consisted of some beef, vegetables, sweet corn soup, and rice. It was a fantastic day!

~Ani, Hanna, Lela

From Hanna: Hi to everyone, especially Carolanne! I continue to miss you all so much and it’s only about a week’s time til I’m finally home! I can’t wait to tell you guys about everything! I love you all so much! 😘❤️

From Ani: Hello my beautiful family! I miss you guys beyond words but I’m having a blast. Can’t wait to see you guys and tell about all the adventures! Miss and love you guys!😘

From Lela: hope everyone is doing well and the house is still standing 😂 love and miss you all so much and can’t wait to see you ❤️❤️

Friday July 26, 2019

It rained last night and this morning, so the hike up the mountain was further pushed back and then, unfortunately, cancelled. Instead, the group watched Lilo and Stitch, and then had some free time until some of the ladies from the different village came to us and taught us how to make virgin coconut oil using untouched, just-picked coconuts. The group played a hand in making it too, and had a lot of fun shaving the coconuts. Even though it was a bit gloomy today, the sunset was amazing! After a couple more hours of free time, the group met for dinner, played ghost in the graveyard and then rounded up the rest of the day with a hearty goodnight.

Warm regards,
Neha

Bula!!

It’s Jessie, Ellie and Foster! Today we headed to the islands to work on the food bank! At the school we painted the bathrooms and did murals on the important steps of hand washing, at the food bank we planted eggplant and tomatoes! Group 1 went snorkeling and saw Manta Rays while Group 2 took a nice nap. After we got back we had our leader of the day activity, dinner, and looked at the beautiful stars!! Ellie says hi Mom, Dad, Addie, and Mimi & Gramps!! Foster says hi to her Mom, Dad, Dog, Sister, and the nice poop she’s going to take when she gets back!!! Jessie says hi Mom, Dad, and Anica!! Until next time!

Sunday July 28, 2019

Bula!

Today we woke up ready for game day! Was our Fijian family fun day !

After having breakfast we broke up into teams to compete in a coconut shaving race and then we headed to the beach to do a tug of way for which we used a super strong tree vine as rope. After our team lost in both challenges, we took a boat out to an island where we had a fun afternoon at a beach, doing swimming, tanning, playing frisbee and having a cookout. Later on, half the group went to snorkel, where they saw sharks, manta rays, pufferfish and many more sealife. We returned to homebase a few hours later where we played charades and eat dinner.

Overall, this was a fun Sunday to remember!

Until next time,

Leaders of the day, Annemijn and Sammy

Monday July 29, 2019

Bula parents!

This morning we all had breakfast together and saw a rainbow! Today was our last day of community service. Group one went to their last day working with the kids and group two worked on the food bank agriculture project in Somo Somo. Afterwards, we got back to home base and participated in a few activities. We played musical chairs and had another fun mentor-led activity. After a delicious dinner, we had a movie night and watched Inside Out. We hope all is well at home. See you soon!

Bula!!

This morning we took the boats to the primary school for a farewell ceremony led by some of the students. The youngest children of the school sang us songs to wish us safe travels and share their appreciation towards us for the opportunity to work with GLA. We sang two Fijian songs to thank them for their hard work the past couple weeks and joined them for a Fijian dance.

Before we left the village we all played games in the field and gave our goodbyes. Afterwards we took the boats to Somo Somo for a cava ceremony and lunch with the community. During the cava ceremony, community leaders shared their appreciation for our contribution to their community and the friendships that were built during our time here.

Sammy, Ani, and Lela, from our GLA group, represented the three projects we completed during our time in Fiji: the food bank, rainwater harvesting tank, and education. They spoke about each of the projects and shared their gratitude towards Somo Somo and Fiji.

We ate lunch, which was prepared using a traditional Fijian style where the food is cooked in the ground, and then shopped in the small market outside of the community room. Women from the village brought crafts such as bracelets, anklets, necklaces, sarongs, shells, etc. to sell.

In the afternoon we left Somo Somo and returned to the resort for afternoon activities. We completed the competition we started this weekend with a paddle board relay race and human hurdles. After our leader activity of the day activity, which was hide and go seek tag, we had dinner. The resort prepared a special meal for us on our last night and performed a few songs to wish us goodbye.

We all took part in the snake dance, in which everyone dances in a line and copies each others dance moves. To end off our last day at the resort we all jumped in the pool after dinner to celebrate the staff at the resort and the amazing time we’ve had the past three weeks. Lastly, we’d like to wish Lela’s dad a very happy birthday; hope it’s very special.

Time Capsule Letter

Bula everyone!!!! How long has it been since you’ve greeted someone that way?! Not counting in Fiji time! Too long in my opinion! I miss you guys!

It seems like it was just yesterday that your room was turning into a swimming pool. I still remember your amazing attitude about it, thank you again for that! Do you still feel like the mud pools did their job? Are you still feeling 10 years younger?

I hope you’re implementing your OMG goals. Are you using less plastic? Don’t forget your reusable bags & straws everywhere you go! A small change can make a big impact!

Everyone at Korouvo & Nadi Bay miss you guys as well! It was so nice waking up in the morning and seeing the ocean right outside of our beach bungalows. We had some awesome times on the island! The one on one reading program meant so much to the kids and the rainwater tanks will provide clean water for several families for many years to come. Maybe one of us will come back in a year and see some of the food you planted being harvested!

Don’t forgot to look up stars once in a while, let them remind you of the clear night skies and the soothing waves of the ocean that you got to experience in Fiji. Don’t let your coconut husking skills get rusty, keep practicing! You never know when you might need to participate in a coconut husking race again! Snorkeling was magical here, so many beautiful fishes! Maybe it inspired some of you to get scuba certified? Y’all were little mermaids and merman’s in the water. Is fit life still happening? Not gonna lie, I’ve slacked off a little bit on it but will definitely start again!

Although our time was short together, the group really bonded and I’m so happy that we got to experience Fiji together! Wishing you all the very best on all your future adventures! Sending you all a big big big hug!

Vinaka!

Brenda aka Queen B

P.S. Don’t forget your sunscreen!!

BULA!!! Oh what a day!!!!! Arrival day, we can’t believe it’s finally here! Almost everyone arrived very early in the morning, there were only missing two people who were arriving in the afternoon. After arriving at home base, the students had breakfast and settled into their rooms.

After hanging out for a bit, they took their swim test & everyone hung out by the pool! We played a bunch of name games to get to know each other & then headed to the beach to do a little clean up! The kids picked up a lot of trash!! The sunset was beautiful there at the beach and then we were treated to a traditional Fijian dance show back at home base. The day was full of activities but everyone was so excited to get some sleep after traveling from so far away! Can’t wait for tomorrow!

Wednesday June 19, 2019

Bula Mom and Dad! Today we started day two with having a nice breakfast as a group by the pool. We then practiced our acting skills by acting out the code of conduct (don’t worry we are all rule followers!). Following this activity, we took a bus to an Indian-owned resort where we learned why there is a heavy Indian presence in Fiji. The local women taught us how to prep the ingredients to make today’s lunch. We made some roti, cut up potatoes and eggplant, and grated coconut which was used to make chutney….SO GOOD!!! During our lunch, Ella received a birthday surprise with a beautiful chocolate cake and a serenade by everyone.

The resort that we were at was really nice and had a waterside, mini golf, and many hammocks, so it was a nice bonding time for all of us! We then hopped back on the bus and headed into the town Nadi where we bought our traditional sarongs which we will need soon when we are working in the village. We also had the opportunity to buy some Fiji goodies! We came back to the our resort and ate a lovely dinner. Then, we met as a group after and learned who was in our mentor groups. We got some free time after to hang out before we went to bed. It was a splendid day with delicious food, and I can’t wait for tomorrow when we get to experience a traditional mud bath here!

P.S. We learned another Fijian word today: Vinaka which means thank you!

See you tomorrow,

Zoe

Thursday June 20, 2019

Bula! Today, we woke up to a lovely breakfast made by the wonderful hotel staff. since Hope and I (Jakayla) were the leaders of the day, we organized a fun game of human knot. It promoted team building and communication, not to mention it was a blast. Once we finished, he hopped into the bus and drove to get the “Best fish and chips in the world” Debatable, I might say.

After stuffing our faces, we headed to the sleeping giant. There, we hiked up the mountain and ended our journey with panoramic views of the surrounding islands. Despite Fiji’s beauty, that incline did not sit well with us. We were so sweaty and exhausted from the hike that the next stop was just what we needed. Mud. We covered ourselves with authentic Fijian mud, which supposedly makes us ten years younger. Expect us to look 6 or 7 when we return home.

To accelerate the drying process, we entertained ourselves with lawn games. After washing off, we soaked in the thermal pools while others got massages, which were amazing btw. Upon returning home, we ate an amazing dinner and learned more about Fijian culture. In conclusion, we are well- exfoliated, well-fed, and still jet-lagged.

Moce!!!!!!!

Friday June 21, 2019

Bula from our new home island, Naviti! This morning we packed up our belongings, and after breakfast, we left our resort and took a bus to the port where we took a three hour boat ride to our island. On the boat, we were able to sit on the top deck and enjoy the open air, the many Fijian islands, and the clear blue water. We received a warm welcome and a big “BULA!” from the staff once we arrived, and we were given fresh coconuts to drink from, which were refreshing after our boat ride.

We then had some down time to spend time swimming in the pool, to walk down the beach, and to tan (still wearing sunscreen though- don’t worry Mom!). The leaders of the day, Michael and Zoe, led an intense game of Mafia that brought everyone together through a little conflict. We ended the night with a wonderful meal, which included carrot soup, fresh vegetables and fruit, chicken, baked potatoes, and chocolate cake; lastly, we ended the long day with a big bonfire on the beach. We can’t wait for our next two and a half weeks on this beautiful island!

BULA from Finlay and Sonya, coming at you with a blog post about day 6 in Fiji! We woke up, and got right to it with breakfast that included cocoa pops, an omelette station and yummy muffins! Next we split up into two groups which both did different activities (we all get to do everything just on different days). The first group did a Fijian lesson were they learned how to count to 10, learned the months, and different animals. Then they had a Fijian music lesson where they sang traditional Fijian songs while the other group was returning from their long hike up the mountain and down to the village, where they learned how to make virgin coconut oil and coconut milk.

The second group took the long way back to the resort, going all the way around the island showing everyone the amazing views and the beautiful island we get to live on for the next 2 weeks. They both went back to their rooms and had some off time that most of us students spent snorkeling. Isabelle also saw a lion fish, but was very careful not to touch it after remembering Trent and his safety talk!

After some fun water adventures they went out to the beach to play some upbeat ultimate frisbee. Sonya even dove to try and catch the frisbee! Then they went to play some volleyball where Finlay and Zoe were talking some trash back and forth as obvious token players of each team. Next we all split off to shower before dinner which had some incredible rice and stew! The local staff taught us a local dance after dinner & then we were off to bed! Goodnight everyone!

Yadra mom and dad! That means good morning in Fijian, it’s Gabi & Gianna! Today some of us went on a beach run with our mentor, Brenda and couple of other runners from the group, while others did yoga with our mentor, Neha, to start off our day. I, gabi, went running and it was pretty tiring I must admit but absolutely beautiful. And Gianna got up early to do yoga! (Am I already defying your expectations?) It really made us all relaxed and put us in the zone for the day.

After breakfast Group 1, went on a snorkeling adventure while Group 2 took the Fijian language and culture lesson. Sammy showed us some coral reefs and a lot of the beautiful sea life here and we saw the biggest manta rays ever! Once we were done, we all came back and had a delicious lunch, group 2 went on a medicine walk where we learned all of the medicinal properties in the plants that the Fijian people use. We also saw our guide climb one of the really tall coconut trees with no ladder and throw down coconuts for us to eat. Abo (the guide who climbed the coconut tree) showed us how to first husk a coconut. I (Gianna) as expected, could not crack the coconut open and instead hit the bead from my bracket into my hand (repeatedly). Despite this I am alive and thriving!

After yet another delicious dinner we ended our fun filled day with a movie night where we all sat under the stars and watched Moana before going to bed.

We love and miss you guys so much!

Hey blog! Quinn and Ella here. Our service has finally started! Today we went on a boat and we sailed off to an island with many wonderful kids and people. Then, what we did was we split off into two groups; one group helped with rainwater in the village, while the other helped the school children with a one on one reading English program in the village. This helps them to read more fluently and efficiently. The rain water group learned about the struggles Fijian family’s face when trying to have enough clean water for their family’s. The rain catching and filtration system collects rain water and houses it in a plastic cylinder that is accessible to each home.

By the end of today the rain group completed the mold and base for the cement. This will allow them to then move forward with the project and add the roof gutters and the plastic rain container. For the reading group, we all sat in a classroom and were assigned one child each. My child (named Kalesi) was assigned to me (Quinn) and we read one small book. She read fluently and then after we played games that would help her with conversation and comprehension. We’ve found that Fijian people are incredibly welcoming and one person even invited the rainwater group to come onto their porch and served tea and snacks without expecting anything from it. It was a real naenae.

Miss you all back home!!

Today we started with a traditional Fijian breakfast and prepared to head to the village for service. after our relaxing 30 minute boat ride we split into our 2 groups to start our service . The groups really worked hard and there was noticeable change in the community almost immediately from the children becoming better readers in the span of a few hours or getting the majority of the concreting done for the rain harvest project. We then headed back to home base for some tea and snacks . After tea time the group had a moment of bonding by playing some games. This was followed by some relaxing free time and a great dinner.

Overall another successful and exciting day in Fiji.

Bula from Fiji!

We started off the morning as usual with a great breakfast and headed off to the village for another day of service. Today each group finished up their projects. Group one finished working with their kids, and group two completed their rainwater collection tank. Throughout the first few days of service, we have embraced the friendly Fijian culture and all that the kind and welcoming people in the village have to offer.

We also formed amazing bonds with the children at the primary school. We all felt very fulfilled and accomplished after seeing all of our hard work turn out well! We returned to the resort and relaxed on the beach. We finished off the afternoon with some challenging but fun bonding games. After a delicious dinner, we completed a leadership activity and went to sleep.

Another amazing day in paradise!

Hello parents!

Today we started with a delicious breakfast at our home base, as per usual. Soon after, Groups 1 and 2 headed off to the village begin our new projects. Group 1 began building the foundation for the rainwater harvesting tank. We mixed the cement and laid it in the ground to dry, making our mark with a snazzy GLA signature and our handprints. We also began to attach the gutters to the outer rim of the house. Group 2 began teaching with the children in the village. We made it through 4 of the 30-minute rotations of reading 1-on-1, and finished off the lessons with some games with the kids.

Both groups found it very rewarding to see the difference we were making in the community, whether it be through building tanks for clean water during the dry months or helping children improve their reading ability. After we finished our service for the day, we headed back to the home base to have a refreshing dip in the ocean and some of us went snorkeling. We worked on posters to bring to the school in celebration of the end of Drug Free Week. We finished our day with a scrumptious dinner and a lovely leadership activity lead by Rein. Each of us wrote a “Where I’m from” poem, and took a look into where everyone comes from and what makes us all unique.

Another great day of service and fun, catch you all tomorrow!

Friday June 28, 2019

We started the day with some unexpected obstacles, the weather did not allow the group to head to the village for service as it was very windy and not safe for the boats to go. Nonetheless we still had an eventful day. The group split into their service groups to get a better in depth understanding of what we are actually doing for the community. After the explanation of the impact we are making in the community we had lunch which were delicious chicken sandwiches with salad.

The locals then grabbed us to participate in some Fijian games . We played Fijian bowling and other small fun games, followed by an exciting game of capture the flag. The beach was our field and after a fun filled hour group two came out on top with a score of 2-1. Neha then lead the group to take some downtime to reflect on ourselves and how we can improve to become better leaders for tomorrow. After this period of reflection the group had a positive attitude to finish the night off with some different but very fun Fijian dances. All the way from the beautiful nation of Fiji -ilir Antonio

Hey mom and dad it’s Gabi and Maya. Today we had quite a relaxing day due to the weather, sadly we could not take part in the activities we had planned but it was still nice to take part in the Fijian dance lesson, make brackets and other stuff from palm leaves and practice all the songs we had learnt.

We also had a yoga session lead by Neha and was fun to stretch and laugh out trying some new yoga postures. We all had a bunch of free time today to stay warm from the cold rain and bond with each other. It was nice to see the other side of the weather here in Fiji. Overall it was a very calm day but we hope to take part in our planned activities tomorrow.

We love and miss you guys alot!

Hello again blog!

Quinn and Ella here.

Our weather today was rainy yet sunny during different times of the day. Because it is the weekend, our day didn’t consist of any service work in the village, therefore instead we went on a short hike to a beautiful beach. There, Trent and or Trenton, and Jakie taught all of us how to play rugby for a couple hours.

It was a pretty eventful game to say the least and many laughs were involved. After that we returned to home base and did beach clean up. Quinn and Ella both have a thing for hermit crabs so we collected many tiny crabs, in addition to picking up trash. We then had lunch followed by tea time and beach time.

We just had a pretty relaxed day with good vibes and overall good times. Everyone is pretty good friends at the moment and the staff is incredible. Quinn and Ella, made really good friends with Sam, Annie, and Sara, who are staff members. They are so welcoming and hilarious.

I miss you Judy and Merle and Rani and the dogs! Wish we didn’t have TMobile so I could text you, but it’s alright. Love you! ~Quinn

Hey mom, dad, and Gig! Miss you lots. 🙂 ~Ella

Bula everyone!

Today we were finally able to return to the village after a weekend of rest and play. Our (Sonya and Hope’s) group headed to the rainwater tank to finish up our work from Thursday, while the other group worked with the children again in the school. The rainwater group spent most of our time with the village’s children, playing tag and running around instead of working like we were supposed to, but that’s okay. It ended up being a highlight of the day. Then we returned back to the the home base where we laid out in the sun and had chicken fights in the ocean. We then ate dinner where we had a amazing dessert cooked by the legendary staff. We’re finishing the night off with star gazing because we never saw such clear stars.
Moce!

Dear blog,

Hannah and Quinn here. Today is Friday and we had a family fun day. Our large group of 17 people split up into smaller groups. One group chose to weave, and walked through a pathway and saw how palm trees were cut by a kind woman in the village. Then, we went back to someone’s house and watched them weave sleeping mats. Another group husked coconuts and created a lobo (an oven in the ground) and then went back to the common hall where we eat lunch.

Another group helped out at different households with whatever the people needed help with. After all of the groups finished, we went to eat lunch that the village prepared. They surprised us with a large feast as a thank you for our hard work. After our lunch, we played with the village children who are super kind and outgoing. The women in the village put out their jewelry and crafts to sell as a local marketplace, and we said our goodbyes to everyone.

When we came back to the home base, group 1 made coconut oil and group 2 had free time. Then after, we played a circle game to bond further, chow circle, dinner, and stargazed (the sky is really clear here at night). That was about it. I miss you Merle, Judy, Rani, aunts and uncles, Miss Nicki, Steve, and all of our friends.

See you all soon!

Sunday July 7, 2019

Bula family and friends! Today was a very sad day for us all because today we had to say goodbye to the beloved staff at Korovou. We watched them perform their final goodbye song, Isa Lei, and there was not one dry eye in the audience. After saying goodbye, we boarded a boat heading back to Nadi that took about 3 hours. Once we arrived, the group stopped by a local grocery store for snacks for our long plane ride. We arrived at the Nadi bay resort shortly after shopping and ate our last dinner in Fiji. Although we all were sad to say goodbye to Fiji, the Vinaka Fiji and Korovou staff, and all of the villagers we are glad to have had this experience. I think it’s safe to say we’re all really excited to go home and share our stories.

See you soon!

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Sports Service Adventure – July 2 – July 15, 2019

Time Capsule Letter

¿K Lo K Sports Program?

We hope your re-entry to home has gone well! We miss spending every day together, whether playing at the sports camp, attempting to catch some waves, mixing cement, or eating delicious meals together. While here in the DR, you stepped out of your comfort zones and bonded through sports as a common language, it was awesome to watch you all grow from this.

We’re here to catch you up on the service sites and remind you guys to say “buen provecho”! The Caño Dulce basketball court is looking pretty good thanks to you all. The community members were able to adjust and center the basketball hoop so that it could be even with the extension that you completed.

The neighborhood kids always ask about you guys and miss playing all the sports with you guys, they send their love. Chewy still hangs with all the groups that come through but he obviously misses you Sports people the most.

Here is a quick shout to all of you so you can remember the good times….

Jimmy: baseball MVP….no cap

Jordan: everyone here stays reppin’ your name; sandals, shirts, hats, flip flops…

Maddie: definitely drank the most salt water while surfing but also had best attitude about it

Gabriel: limoncillo and plátanos is all this Father needs

Shannon: probably going to win the next Olympics in gymnastics…or volleyball

Samy: our Brazilian fútbol star

Elliot: spirit animal=dog

Graham: most likely to run for office

Theo: eats ice cream and meat so he can watch movies in an air conditioned hospital room

Porter: this Alaskan must have gills from being in the water so much

Norman: best at finding fresh fruit and connecting with the locals

Nicolas: twerks better than Theo…

Bella: bracelets and air forces all day everyday

Abigail: breaking that guy in basketball…on God

We hope that you guys have had time to reflect on your awesome experience here in the Dominican Republic and share your stories with friends and family back home. Also, don’t forget to hold yourselves accountable for the One (Five) Meaningful Goals we made as a group:

Don’t take anything for granted, Learn about your community, Understand our privilege and advocate for others, Share our experiences and tell the true stories of the locals, and Recognize socioeconomic differences.

We are so proud of you guys and know that you are out there being the best Global Citizens you can be J Hopefully you haven’t forgotten about us old folks!!

Con mucho cariño, (ß for those of you who aren’t Gabe or Norman, this means ‘lots of love’)

Hello Everyone!

After a long day of travel, all of our lovely Sports students arrived to the Dominican Republic safe and sound. We had some time to check out the local beach 2 minutes away and then had some delicious dinner. We had orientation and all agreed on how to behave appropriately over the next two weeks 🙂
We look forward to going to Caño Dulce tomorrow to start our service project.

Wednesday July 3, 2019

Hello Everybody,

Today we woke up and ate breakfast, cooked by local Dominicans who work at our home base. We then went to our project site in Caño Dulce, it was amazing to see the people be so social, they had a great sense of community and everyone seemed to know each other. The community was very hospitable and welcoming to us. We learned that they live with certain lack of resources for things that we may take for granted.

We ate lunch and learned to properly greet each other while eating. We worked hard all day on the local basketball course, extending it by mixing and placing cement in the proper areas needed. We had a community tour and saw Jony’s beehive, his business and income, and tasted the honey that sells… it was delicious. Today was a good, working and learning day.

We came back to the lodge, swam, and ate a really great dinner. After that, we had a presentation on Human Securities. This made us realize how much we take for granted back home or maybe some of our own securities may be lacking. We had good discussions about food, health, environment, political, personal, economic, and community security. The day was very tiring but it was really great. We are so happy to be here.

“its not a cultural immersion course but that’s what we are getting here”

Thursday July 4, 2019

Hello Everyone,

¿Que lo que? (Whats up?). Today we continued our mission to finish the basketball court project in beautiful Caño Dulce. We mixed cement together in teams, assigning roles and working together. At 12pm, we had lunch at Mateo’s home where we ate eggplant, arroz, beans, salad, chicken, and fruit (mango was delicious). We played a pick up basketball game with the locals after lunch and then continued to work. We listened to local music, danced, made new friends. The locals are very open and friendly to new people like us, it is very nice to see they understand our purpose and why we are working in their community.

They give us the same respect that we give them. In the afternoon, we went on the beach, got to swim a little bit, played catch, baseball, frisbee toss, soccer, played with dogs, etc. We all are getting to know each other a little bit better. We came back, had a great dinner consisting of tacos (Taco Thursday!), cooked by our lovely chefs Mari and Belli. After dinner, we had an activity/debate about international development in the Dominican Republic, especially in communities of Haitian descent. We learned about governmental economics and citizen rights; how the DR can work together as a community to take on large projects and tasks to help benefit a local community. This helps various different people, like youth and people who are in need of physical activity. We notice how everyone is very inclusive, smiles on their faces, genuinely happy people, and express solidarity.

After Day 3, we have all had a great time learning about the DR culture, how different they are and how special it is to learn about another way of life. We appreciate and enjoy everything we have and we see that joy can be brought to us, not only by materialistic things. We are thankful to be able to spend time in another community very different than ours and that there is more than one side of seeing and living life. We learn to adapt to the resources we have and have fun while doing so.

We look forward to tomorrows surf lessons & sports camp.

Leaders of the Day,

Aaron and Norman

Friday July 5, 2019

Hola a todos (Hello everybody),

Today we woke up at the usual 8 o’clock and ate a delicious breakfast including pancakes, eggs, and the regular watermelon and pineapple. After breakfast, we headed across the street to the beach to attempted to learn some new surfing skills. We went out and tested the waves in groups of three (tres), while the rest of group played catch with a baseball, a frisbee, and played soccer. As the morning progressed and it came time for lunch we headed back to the lodge for some free time.

In our free time we hung out at the big (good) pool while it rained for one of the first times in three months. While in the pool, we did some synchronise dives and cannon balls that made the water splash all over. After some fun in the pool we headed to lunch. For lunch, we had some pasta, rice, and fish which tasted delicious after time at the beach and pool.

After a yummy lunch, we headed out into the local community asking kids if they want to come play at the fields with us. We asked them things like, quieres jugar con nosotros? (Do you want to come play with us). After gathering some kids from the community we split up and played baseball, soccer, dominos, and basketball. Bony, Porter, and Gabe were the only trio that were able to defeat the local Dominicans in basketball, while Jordan got crossed up trying.

During baseball, Norman hit one of the farthest shots today resulting in a homerun! Also, Theo tried baseball for the first time in his life. After our first day of sports camp we came back and had more free time to hang out as a group at the pool.

Sitting at the pool was a nice refresher during a warm afternoon. However, this resulted in many of guys getting sunburnt. After, chilling at the pool we headed back to the dinning hut for another delicious dinner. This dinner included French fries, fried chicken, crushed fried plantains and more fruit.

After a great dinner we sat down in our hangout spot to watch a great movie called “A Fighting Chance” which showed us many stories of people who have overcome their situations to strive and meet their goals in sports. After watching this documentary, everyone shared a story about a time where they were heartbroken after losing a game or match in their respective sports. After the documentary we had some time to play cards and chill before heading to bed. We are all excited for our fun filled day tomorrow at Dudu Lagoon and Playa Preciosa.

– Leaders of the day Porter and Jordan

Saturday July 6, 2019

Hello friends and family,

We woke up to the sound of rain but the skies cleared up on our way to our outings for the day. We ate breakfast and hopped on the bus to go on an excursion to Dudu Lagoon, which was 1.5 hours away. We jumped off rocks into two lagoons where the water was fresh, pretty, and crystal clear surrounded by caves. At first, half our group was scared to jump in, but then hearing how nice the water was, everyone got into it. We went to the second lagoon and played a jumping water game, similar to charades. We watched others zipline into the lagoon which made us excited about our upcoming excursion to 27 Charcos because we’ll be able to slide and jump in those waterfalls. Porter had the best dives, no cap. We dried off and had lunch at the restaurant at Dudu Lagoon. In the afternoon we went to Playa Preciosa which was paradise.

Lots of students body surfed, and Aaron and Theo got their hair braided by a local woman. We had a chance to buy jewelry and Epi, who was selling jewelry to us, even knew Gabe’s family who live nearby! Lots of us bought jewelry. After getting back to home base, we had pool and hang out time before dinner. In the evening, we watched an eye-opening short documentary and talked about confirmation bias of our expectations of another place and considered how we share our experiences when talking with others. We had a fun day and need to put on aloe because sunscreen wears off when we have full days outside!

Sunday July 7, 2019

Hey Everyone!

It’s Elliot and Shannon here. Today we woke up to the cool morning air and ate a delicious breakfast of Froot Loops, garlic toast, and fruits. We went surfing on the beautiful Dominican beach, running across the white sand into the crashing waves. Emiliano taught us how to wait for the waves while sitting on our surfboards. Some of us, like Samy and Nicolas, caught more waves than the rest. Some of us face planted into the sand! While some were surfing, others were tanning, playing soccer, or throwing frisbees. Afterwards, we headed back to the lodge for a wonderful lunch of rice and chicken, cooked by our wonderful cocineras, Mari and Belli. Over lunch, we talked about our exciting surfing adventure.

In the afternoon, we led a sports camp for the local neighborhood kids. We headed to El Play, where there are basketball courts, baseball fields, and plenty of grass to play and run on. Some of us enjoyed a game of basketball with the teenagers of Las Canas, while others did cartwheels on the grass with some very energetic little girls. We also played a game of baseball, along with a few matches of fútbol (soccer). Tired after a few hours of activity in the sun, we walked back to the lodge for some free time before dinner. Some of us played a game of poker, wagering bottles of honey (made by a local beekeeper!), while others took a refreshing shower or went for a cool dip in the pool.

Our dinner consisted of mashed potatoes, avocados, and fried chicken and fish, complemented by a cup of sweet lemonade. We were joined by Marcello, a student who arrived early for his own program, and who will be staying with us for the next day. Over dinner, we talked about our future pursuits and learned more about each other.

During the sunset, we wandered over to the beach for a dance lesson led by Allison, our mentor. We learned how to salsa; a few of us were apprehensive at first but quickly got into rhythm. A few boys had their hair braided by our local friend, and others ran to play with Chewy, the adorable stray dog who wanders Las Canas. In the end, we all had a fantastic time. Today’s events culminated to form one of the best, most exciting nights thus far.

Tuesday July 9, 2019

Hey Everyone,

This will be short and sweet tonight since we are all tired. Today we were woke up pretty early and ate some good breakfast. We drove two hours to the 27 Charcos (puddles) and walked through multiple waterfalls and streams to jump off rocks and slides. It was beautiful and refreshing. Later we had some free time, played on the beach, and hangout at the home base. We took pictures in the really nice sunset as well.

Our nightly activity was on the beach tonight and we discussed different sports controversies that we hear and see in the news. It was nice to talk about others perspectives and learn from each other. Some of us learned how to dance bachata, it was funny, we laughed a lot. Tomorrow we have surfing and sports camp, which we always look forward to.

Wednesday July 10, 2019

Hello People,

Today we woke up at our usual 8am. Had a delicious breakfast consisting of pancakes, fruit, oatmeal, and eggs. We had our fourth day of surfing with Emi, our instructor. Some of us played catch, soccer, and swam in the water while we waited our turn to surf. The local kids came to hangout with us at the beach too.
We came back to the lodge for some lunch consisting of rice, beans, pork, salad, and fruit. We took a little break and then walked over to sports camp to play baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball and get some of our hair braided by the little girls. They love playing with us just as much as we love being with them.

After sports camp, we had an activity where we shared about an item that best represents ourselves. Some people used their baseball gloves, photos, hat, ear plugs, lifeguard buoy, and other things. It was nice to learn about each other that way, we practiced our active listening skills 🙂 We ate dinner and then had some free time. We played cards, charades, and hung out by our rooms, it was a chill night filled with lots of laughs. Tomorrow is our last day of surfing and sports camp. We are grateful for Emi and all his patience teaching all of us to surf.

Thursday July 11, 2019

Hello everyone,

Today was the 10th day of our adventures in the Dominican Republic and one of our most informative. We started the day off with a delicious breakfast of papaya smoothie and garlic toast. Next we went out with Emiliano for our last surfing lesson. Rough circumstances brought upon us two broken surfboards but we made do with the ones that worked. After we finished the session, we enjoyed a Dominican delicacy, fried chicken and rice. We then gave Emiliano a card, which we had all signed, as a token of our appreciation for all that he had thought us in the past week.

In the afternoon, we headed to our last sports camp, where we played the usual baseball, basketball, and fútbol. As the only girl playing, Abigail had the highlight of the day as she crossed Liuz, a Dominican teen that we play basketball with, up so badly that he fell onto his back and everyone watching went wild with amazement. At the end of the camp, we took pictures with the Dominican kids and said heartbreaking goodbyes.

Then we went to get ice cream at a local shop before we finally went back to home base. We relaxed and played cards before enjoying our last meal of the day, which consisted of chicken (with really good sauce), plantains, vegetables, and lemonade. We finished off the day with an extremely interestingly seminar, given by our three local directors: Bony, Junior, and Loubens. They are all Haitian-Dominicans and they shared their personal stories about the inequality of Hatians in the Dominican Republic. We are excited for the hike to the community, Brisón, tomorrow.

Thanks for reading,

Elliot and Nicolas

Friday July 12, 2019

Hey all!

Shannon and Maddie here! Today we woke up early at 6:30 to get an early start for our hike up Mount Brisón. After a delicious breakfast of toast, eggs, and fruit, we enjoyed an exciting hour-and-a-half car ride, filled with music. We arrived at the base of the mountain, preparing for the hike and meeting the members of the community.

The hike proved to be steeper than we expected, but we persevered and were able to enjoy the views and learn a lot about the community as we progressed upward. We stopped at a local’s house, and discovered how they cook food with a fire in between three rocks, which is called a fogón.

We also saw the latrines that they used, and were able to take on a different perspective about various ways of life. Our wonderful leaders, Marie, Allison, and Sydney, helped us connect what we were seeing to the seven human securities that our trip focuses on. For example, the cows, pigs, and chickens that the families own provide food security for them.

A third of the way to our destination, we stopped at Juanita’s house, where she was selling bizcocho (cake-bread flavored with cinnamon and ginger) and beautiful handmade bracelets. Juanita even offered to spell out our names on them with alphabet beads! We refilled our water bottles and continued the trek upward, looking forward to meeting her again on the way back down.

After another half-hour of persistence, we were rewarded with amazing views of rolling green hills. Doña Máxima, the head of the community, as well as some of the neighbors, welcomed us into her home for a lunch of rice, beans, and chicken. Some of us also danced salsa and bachata, invigorated by the music she was playing!

The walk back down the mountain was slightly treacherous, but in our opinion, much easier than the path upward. On the way back to the lodge, we made a quick stop at Bon, our new favorite ice cream place. For dinner, we enjoyed rice, vegetables, chicken, and fruit. After dinner, we discussed 7e’s human securities and how they related to the Brisón community, before working on a goal-setting activity.

We resolved to pursue the five goals we came up with: 1. Not taking anything for granted, 2. Learning about our community, 3. Understanding our privilege+advocating for others, 4. Sharing our experiences, and 5. Recognizing our socioeconomic differences. And now, we’re heading to bed in anticipation of tomorrow’s activities at Caño Dulce!

Saturday July 13, 2019

Hola, k lo k? (what’s up?)

Today we went to Cano Dulce community for the third and final day of working on the basketball court. After much dirt and sweat, we finished building the extension and felt accomplished for completing our goal. We brought down the basketball hoop in order to re-center it, which was a feat that several took turns working on. We had to break up the concrete holding up the hoop, and then they will continue with additional tools or support to clear the cement and measure and re-center the hoop for the court. We felt good about what we were able to get done.

After a hard working day, we went to Bon for a refreshing ice cream. Afterwards during free time, the group split up, where some of us went to the pool and other went to play a game of basketball once again. During our nightly group meeting, we discussed the seven elements and what it takes to be a global citizen. Everyone participated in small group conversations and learned a lot from the counselors and the TED talk. All of us have mixed emotions, where we are sad that we are leaving in two days, but tomorrow we are going to have a wonderful day snorkeling.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Sports Service Adventure – June 16 – June 29, 2019

Time Capsule Letter

¡Hola Sports Program!

We hope this message finds you well and rested from your intense two weeks here in the Dominican Republic! Junior and I wanted to update you on the projects that you all were working on while you were here a couple months ago. The basketball court in Caño Dulce is pretty much complete, maybe just a little bit of paint to finish it up.

The locals love playing on the new and extended court every afternoon. The other kids from Las Canas community where we had sports camp are also still talking about you guys. They appreciated getting to know you all through all the different sports activities you guys played with them throughout the program.

We hope you guys have had time to reflect (and rest!) from your experience here with us in the DR. We had some good times with you guys…

Alex rapping for us and being a trooper after running/falling down Mount Brisón…

Lex winning at Nun and all the other card games…

Harrison catching all the (HUGE) waves at our local beach like a pro…

Lucas smashing everything in sight and always volunteering to be the Leader of the Day…

Max making best friends with the kids at the sports camp and spitting his Spanish game in the community…

Drake getting “American” braids and showing off his table drum skills…

Deja holding her own as the solo girl on the trip and showing the boys up at headstands…

We enjoyed playing Kemps (or Kimp, depending on who you ask), choi di dee and Uno and the competitiveness it brought out in us all.

We hope you learned a lot with us and see brightness in your futures.

WEEZY OUT!!!

-Marie and Junior

Good Evening from the DR!

All seven students have made it safe and sound to Las Canas, Dominican Republic. Deja and Max were the first to arrive so they had the opportunity to not only walk along the ocean but do a beach clean up at the same time! Talk about being productive! We ate a good hearty meal of chicken, French fries, salad, and fruit for dinner before going over orientation and community ethics as a group. Everyone is tired after a long day of traveling but they are in good spirits and are excited about tomorrows community project at the local school. Here are a couple of pictures from todays activities. We look forward to updating you all on these next two weeks in the DR!

All the best,

Marie (International Director) and Junior (Local Director)

Hey Everybody out there!

Fun fact, we have survived Day 2 and it was awesome! Today we went to a local school and painted a basketball court, it was really fun to be around everyone while working really hard under the sun. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were AMAZING. We had eggs, fish, rice, lasagna, and fresh fruit.

After dinner, we had an activity talking about the seven elements of human security (the partnership organization we work with in the Dominican Republic, 7E). We then had a ’speed dating’ activity where we got to know each other a lot better in a short amount of time! Our first two days have been great.

Hola, ¿Cómo estás?

Done with Day 3! Today we helped start to expand a basketball court in Caño Dulce. We mixed cement with dirt and shovels. After all the hard work, we came back and had a good lunch. We then played different sports with the locals like basketball, soccer, and baseball. We walked back to the lodge by the beach near the lodge. Once dinner came around, everyone was pretty tired from a long day of work. Before we went to bed, we had a debate activity that got pretty heated! It was about the Dominican Republic and Haitian relations, it was really cool.

Wish us luck tomorrow for our surfing lessons…

Today was a delightful adventure. We began our day by attempting to conquer the waves of Las Canas Beach. After surfing, we walked back to the lodge where we munched on chicken with a side of rice, it was muy delicioso! After lunch, we took a guagua to Caño Dulce- a beautiful community 5 minutes away from the home base. Here we worked with the locals to extend their community basketball court.

After our service project, we had some free time to play cards and catch up on some sleep. After dinner, we watched a documentary about athletes in developing countries competing in different sports. It was really interesting. This concludes another spectacular day in the DR.

Hello Parents,

Today we surfed again and we were looking a lot better than day one, we caught some waves! We also had our second day of sports camp and we think that the local kids are really enjoying it as much as we are. Tonight was taco night for dinner and we loved it, muy rico. We are looking forward to hiking Brisón tomorrow. Will send pictures soon!

Saludos,

Lucas and Lex

Saturday June 22, 2019

Hello everybody,

Today we woke up early, had breakfast, and drove an hour to our destination. We hiked up a huge hill, very green and beautiful, with cows and chickens and roosters. It was a nice community, but very far away from everything else. We learned about the human securities that these people lacked in the community. We stopped by the super market on our way home to pick up snacks and exchange money. We were very tired from the hike so we came back to the lodge to rest, eat dinner, and watch a documentary. We are excited to rest and go surfing tomorrow.

Adios!

Good Evening,

Today we woke up at 8, had fruit, cereal, eggs, and toast for breakfast. After that, we went to go surf with our instructor. We ran into the water and played games on the shore and laughed a lot. We came back to the lodge for lunch and ate rice, beans. And fish. We then played basketball against the locals at sports camp. We drove to the beach to do a beach clean up for an hour. Had some free time for a little to play cards and hangout out. Then we ate dinner at 6. At night we had an activity called Human Obstacle Olympics, where each of us had a disability and we learned to work through it.

Good Evening everyone!

This morning we had a wonderful a breakfast with potatoes, eggs, toast and lots of different fruits. After that, our surf instructor had us go on a skateboard to teach us different surfing techniques to move our hips. We then got in the water to try to catch some waves, even though they were smaller today. In the afternoon, we had lunch chicken fried rice with, fried yuca, salad, and fruit. Then we went to sports camp, there were a lot of locals there today so we were able to have a good game of basketball and baseball.

On our way home after the camp, we walked on the beach to the lodge. After free time, we had a delicious dinner that consisted of chicken, fries, eggplant, plantains, fruit. When it was time to do our capstone project, we broke up into two groups. We had to plan to facilitate games with the locals for our last day of sports camp tomorrow (capture the flag and TAPS). Wish us luck tomorrow because we will need to get over the language barrier when explaining our games!

Hello Everyone,

Today we woke up, had breakfast, and went to another beach to go check out some local surfers. It was cool to see a bunch of different age people catching waves. We then came back to the lodge and ate a big lunch. After lunch, we had our final Sports Camp day with the local neighborhood kids. We played ‘TAPS’ with them and then ‘Duck Duck Goose’ which they really liked. We finished the camp with a game of baseball which was really fun. After camp, we had free time and then had a delicious dinner. We had a presentation on how to continue being a Global Citizen and then we had a talent show which was funny. To end the night, we all played cards and showed each other magic card tricks. It was a good day, but we are looking forward to snorkeling tomorrow!
