BLOG POST FOR JULY 26 & 27

The rumble of chatter filled vans carrying students through the lush scenery between the arrival airport in the city of Liberia and our new GLA home base at Angles Eco Lodge. It was the sound of bonds being formed that will set the foundation for this GLA team, and possibly even for life-long friendships. The group has students from states across the USA, and 4 countries, including Colombia, Canada, and Peru. While rain slowed our journey, time passed quickly with the opportunity to socialize, making it clear that these students are excited to learn, not just from Costa Rica, but also from one another.

Three of our students; Luke, Eva, and Samson, experienced major delays which caused them to come a day late. Trip mentor, Sar, picked them up at the Liberia airport and brought them to home base. This made our group complete and ready to get to work.

In orientation, students drew a poster to represent the values they hope to see embodied by their cohort. It held the words to be the foundation for how they hope to treat one another. While the day began with setting the group values, it ended with a discussion about how those very values will apply to their goals for this two-week trip and beyond. Students are synthesizing the connection between the values they chose; fun communication, and open-mindedness, and the culture in which they are immersing, one that is characterized by an indelible openness to a community that includes people, animals, and the environment – a concept fondly summarized by the Costa Rican mantra Pura Vida.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 28

Written by Samson, Spencer, and Francios

After an early wakeup and a quick breakfast, we all headed to the beach for our first surf day. After a group warm-up we took to the ocean and, under the watchful eyes of our instructors, we rode the first of many waves yet to come. We left the beach tired but accomplished as we headed back to base camp for lunch before our next stop of the day: a chocolate tour. My group first explored the botanical garden, learning about the diverse plant life here in Costa Rica. After the tour we took part in the production of chocolate as we grinded fresh cacao nibs into a creamy chocolate base, similar to that which is put into chocolate bars that we eat every day. From there, it was onto the tasting as we sampled different chocolates. We concluded the day with dinner and a debate surrounding sea turtle protection which marked the end of another beautiful day here in Costa Rica.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 29

Written by Leaders of the Day – Mimi, Maeve, Alexandra, Maria & Meha

Hi from Costa Rica!!!

Today we woke up at 6:30 so that we could head to Playa Avellanas and learn about mangroves from our new friend Frank!! Frank is our community service partner who started the organization GEA (Grupo Ecológico de Avellanas). We learned about the different types of mangroves, and all the different animals that live in them. We picked up trash along the beach, and had a total of 8.96 pounds! We also collected mangrove seeds “propogules” to help with reforestation efforts. Then we headed back to home base for lunch, where we had really good fish and salad. In the afternoon. we headed back to Playa Avellanas to hang up signs that previous GLA groups painted that tell visitors not to use the beach as their trash can, along with other advice to increase environmental awareness. We walked along the beach to the estuary and then we swam in the ocean! We’re getting up really early for surfing at 7am tomorrow, for a real “dawn patrol” as it’s called in surfer lingo.

Pura vida!

Here are lots of pics from the last couple days!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 30

Written by Jackson, Dylan K., Arthur P. & Quinn

Dear friends and families,

Today on July 30th we had an early morning wake up at 5am. We then had breakfast and headed out to the beach for some early morning waves which were great!!! Afterwards, we had some time to hangout at the beach to swim and eat! Following that we returned back to home base for lunch and then went to a local organic garden where we learned about permaculture. Everyone did their part in helping making the ecosystem better and better and had a great time doing it! We planted some avocado trees and worked on lots of other projects. The 31 of us completed in a few hours what would have taken the small team of 3 at the garden many weeks, so they were very grateful for our help. After that we headed back to home base for some free time, dinner, tech time and early bed for the catamaran!!!

🤙🏽 Pura Vida!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 31

Written by Luke, Josh, and Drew

Today we got off to an early morning on a catamaran. We rode to a nearby beach with beautiful scenery. Here we went on a snorkeling tour where they explored the local reefs. Then we returned to the boat where we swam, paddle-boarded, and socialized with students from other tours. We then went back to the boat where we enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by the staff. We rode back to the beach, enjoying the views. When we returned to homebase we rested for a little. We then went to a nearby market full of goods made by community members. After we went to homebase once again where we receiveD a Spanish lesson from Rodrigo before eating dinner. It was a super relaxing and beautiful day and we’re stoked for tomorrow!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 1

Written by Cabin 6 – Natalie, Estefania, Alyson, Eva & Abigail

Good morning friends and family! This morning we spent our time working on a service project that consisted of taking micro plastic samples from Playa Avellanas. The data from our samples helps us understand our impact on plastics in our environment. Following that we spent the rest of our afternoon and evening hanging out by the pool, playing football, listening to music, and enjoying the beautiful crescent moonrise. In the evening after delicious sopa Azteca, we shared our rose, bud, and thorn. We are really looking forward to seeing a new beach tomorrow and collecting more data on microplastics, as well as getting to hear from a guest speaker in the afternoon.

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 2

Written by Cabin Number 1 – Maxwell, Dylan R., Noah S., and Alex D.

This morning we got all of the cabins up at 6:30 am with some melodic tunes for the early morning. After a healthy breakfast of eggs, gallo pinto, and toast we headed out to the beach to meet with Frank and locate microplastics along the beach. We participated in the Big Microplastic Survey where we send in very small plastics found along the beach so we can identify them and use them in future studies and to help the ocean. Using buckets, spoons, water, and a sifter we spent a couple hours finding microplastics in groups along the beach.

After finishing looking for microplastics we played soccer and some football on the beach. Then we headed to a local grocery store and restocked on snacks for the next couple of days. Finally, we headed back to the hotel and ate lunch at 1230. After lunch we had a long break where people hung out at the pool until a guest speaker named Andrea Diaz who is a former professional surfer for the Costa Rican national team and now runs an organization called Surf4Youth came to talk. Andrea talked about her life and her organization, then we asked her questions. After Andrea left we all hung out playing pool, hanging around the pool, and listening to music until we had dinner. Dinner was delicious today, we had cheeseburgers and French fries. It was a great day today in Costa Rica.

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 3

Today at GLA Surf, Sports, and Sustainability we started the day off with a nice breakfast at our home base. We then traveled to the hot beach to do some beach yoga at Playa Negra. In the afternoon we did some community service at Junquillal. We painted signs, made wind chimes, and setup a chicken coop. Lastly, we ate dinner, had an amazing hour of tech time, then went to bed ready for our 7 am surfing lesson!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 4

Written by Cabina 4; Simone, Jesse, and Catalina

Today we woke up early at 5:30 A.M, had a simple breakfast then headed out to the beautiful beach, Avellanas. This was our third surf lesson. It was so amazing. The water was so glassy and smooth. We caught some really big and long waves even though it was hard to get back past the break. After a two hour session of surfing and many tropical smoothies later, we relaxed for a bit in the beach. Today they had the most delicious muffins that had chocolate and bananas. Later, we headed to a local café, Jalapeño, for breakfast burritos and fruit smoothies. There were crazy named menu items like a protein shake named “funky monkey.” After we all ate we hopped back on the bus to listen to some sing along tunes. Let me tell you, we sang our hearts out. After we came back to home base we had lunch and chilled. Our new favourite activity at home base is to play pool. Some of us are getting pretty good. We also got lucky today and got to watch kung foo panda one and Madagascar 2. The classics!

Let’s not forget today was our first official day with our new mentor Sam!! Along with our Sam, we had our first day of sports service. Here we painted signs, cleaned benches and goal posts, and so much more cleaning. After all of our hard work we divided into two groups and played the most intense game of soccer. Oh and did i mention we played in the middle of down pouring rain. Yes! Very muddy. After what felt like so many goals later we headed back to home base, showered off, and headed to dinner. We shared our highlights of our days and shouted out our friends. We eat yet another delicious meal and finished the day with a night activities where we learned the importance of fully researching places before souly relying on stereotypes.

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 5

Written by Cabin 3: Arthur, Dylan K., and Jackson

This morning we woke up to an amazing breakfast prepared by our hosts. We then proceeded to finish our service for the trip with Frank that included, painting soccer goals, painting benches, collecting trash, and painting signs out of recycled wood from a nearby construction site. After we finished the work, everyone had a fun little soccer skirmish; then we went back to home base to clean up for lunch. Our afternoon activities included a cultural cooking lesson and cultural games. We were taught about traditional kitchen supplies; for example, there is a common Costa Rican fruit that was used as a bowl. We made handmade delicious tortillas and waffles. Frank, along with a group of local children joined us in a variety of common games played in Costa Rica. Some of the most memorable were quittitch and the team marble ramp. Overall, today was a great last day of service where we were immersed in their traditions. Everyone can’t wait for a great surf day tomorrow and the big excursion.

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 6

Written by Drew, Francois, and Luke

We were supposed to have an early wake up for our final surf lesson at 5:30am, but we couldn’t wake everyone up because our alarm didn’t go off. However, everyone adjusted quickly and ate a quick breakfast.

We arrived at the beach in pumped spirits knowing that it was our last opportunity to surf some nice waves at Avellanas. We saw a lot of improvement with our group and it was impressive how good one can get at a certain task if they truly commit and put their mind to it.

At 10am, we arrived back at home base to eat delicious burritos for brunch. We made sure to shower and pack up quickly in order to get to Blue River resort as soon as possible. We were looking forward to this excursion for the past few days, and our arrival showed the whole population of the hotel how excited we were. We immediately jumped into the hot springs and went down the slide. We also went to the sauna that had so many bats inside. It was a little scary, but Sarah told us that if we were quiet, the bats wouldn’t move because they use echo location in order to survive (we unfortunately disregarded what she said and yelled so much that the bats flew everywhere). We finished our activity with a mud bath and rinsed off with the showers. The night ended well with a nutritious dinner and more excitement for the following day – zip lining and a waterfall hike.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 11

Hi families!

Today was the group’s first full day in Costa Rica and it has been great so far. Today was Orientation Day and covered various topics from Code of Conduct, to Community Agreement, conducted health checks and ran swim tests. After we got somewhat dry from the pool, we dived into a delicious Costa Rican lunch. We had a dish called “Casado de Pollo” which is white rice, frijoles, chicken, salad and it was delicious (a few of us went up for seconds hehehe). After lunch, it was still very sunny and warm and made a quick trip to Playa Negra where we dipped our toes in the water. We played soccer, volleyball and made some rad sand sculptures. Before heading back to home base for dinner, we stopped at a local market to stock up on snacks for the trip. We ended the night with students meeting in their new mentor groups!

Hi GLA Families!

Today in Costa Rica we started off our morning by going surfing on a beautiful beach where we were taught by some amazing instructors who gave us great pointers on how to stand up on the board. After that we came back to Home base and had lunch. After lunch, we headed to an amazing chocolate company called Reina’s chocolate and we got to learn about the chocolate making process and got to taste some amazing different kinds of real authentic Costa Rican chocolate. We finished off the night by having a delicious dinner made by amazing cooks that always bring a smile to our face when we taste their food.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 13

Written by Ole, Will, and Kamron

Hola Familias!

Today we woke up feeling energized and ready to tackle the day. We had a very nutritious breakfast which consisted of scrambled eggs, tacos, beans, rice and other natural healthy foods. I should also mention that Doña Maria Luisa, the owner of the hotel, collects avocados for guacamole from an avocado tree that grows on our property. We then went to the playa avellanas to clean up trash and plant mangrove saplings. Later we went to the pool to cool off after lunch. Next we got on the bus and sang songs on the way to the beach to plant more saplings. At the beach we met a very cool local named Frank who is the founder of Grupo Ecológico de Avellanas (GEA) and is helping clean up the community and organizes our service projects. It started pouring rain at the beach during our clean up so we went to a local restaurant for smoothies. Once back at the hotel we ate dinner, had tech time, and split into mentor groups to talk about our goals for the rest of the program and even outside of GLA. Overall it was a great day and we’re looking forward to what will come tomorrow!

Hi Families,

Today is Thursday, July 14th. This morning, we had a surf lesson at Playa Avellanas. The surf was fun today and there were some great waves and also some wipeouts. In the afternoon, we helped Yermana in her organic garden, planting avocado trees, creating compost, and cleaning the garden. Highlights include seeing howler monkeys, as well as when Kamron and Mason tried very spicy peppers. We finished off the day with a delicious dinner and a group game of “Yes and”.

Today, the group had a service project in the morning at the beach in Avellanas. The project was to collect data on how much micro plastics are in the world’s oceans. We scooped sand into sifters and collected the micro plastic which would float in the water. The water was used to separate the sand and micro plastics and the plastic was collected. Afterwards, we hung out on the beach until it was time to return to Home Base.

Everyone ate lunch and then we had a guest speaker, Jairo, who is a professional surfer. The group asked questions about his personal life which helped shine a light into his past and how he got into surfing. After our conversation, we watched clips of him surfing and wow is he talented! To end our time with Jairo, many in the group bought his coffee which he had brought from his local coffee farm. Afterwards, we jumped in the pool for an hour or so, had a workshop to learn a few extra Spanish words and had great local food for dinner. Finally, after a leadership activity, we went to bed excited for the day to come.

After an early wake up at 5:30, the group enjoyed a light breakfast of fresh fruit and cereal. Shortly thereafter, the group competed in an epic showdown of Rock Paper Scissors before boarding the bus for a hour long bus ride. The group waited eagerly on shore for the boat crew to arrive. We disembarked the small boat (panga in Spanish) for the larger catamaran. The boat promptly set sail for the nearby beach with music and drinks for all. After numerous Shirley temples were enjoyed by the students, the boat set anchor near a small beach where students could enjoy a plethora of leisurely activities. Prepped with snorkeling gear, paddle boards, and flippers, we all enjoyed the warm Pacific water before returning for food. After lunch, the catamaran began the return voyage.

The students boarded the bus and rode back to camp for a second lunch filled with delicacies prepared by Doña Maria, the Home Base owner. Stuffed to the brim, the group ventured to the local community center for a craft fair for souvenirs and sweets. Following the fair, students took a brief rest and listened to an informative lecture by Rodrigo on the importance of permaculture and building sustainably. With the sun setting on the horizon, students then enjoyed time with friends and a taste of home including burgers and fries. To conclude a fun filled day, the group enjoyed leadership activities and time with friends. All in all, the day was a massive success and students were left exhausted but fulfilled. Cole remarked that after this, the group was reminiscent of a bicycle… too/two tired. 😉

BLOG POST FOR JULY 20

Written by leaders of the day ~ Makalia, Shelby, Lindsay, Charlotte

Today was an early day for us all, 5:15 wake up. However, the waves at the beach were worth it. We had our third surfing lesson, and ended it with smoothies. Then some of us had such insane appetites after surfing, we had an early lunch at a local organic restaurant called “Jalapeño”, which had great lattes and burritos. Next door was a small gift shop were we could buy jewelry and sunglasses (among other locally made artisan goods). After a good “second lunch” at home base, we headed to a local community to begin community service. We planned on painting benches around the soccer field, but just as we began, it started pouring rain. However, this wasn’t all bad, since those who weren’t cleaning tires to be painted got to play soccer in the rain. We had a great time, and finished our day with a double rainbow at golden hour.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 22

Written by Levi, Collin, and Angelina

We started off the day waking up at 5:15 to get ready for our real “dawn patrol” surf. We all caught some epic waves as it was our last session at Playa Avellanas. We made our way back to home base to eat our last lunch of chicken wraps and guacamole made with the avocados from the huge tree on the property. Then we started our long 3 hour drive to the beautiful Blue River Resort. Once we got there we settled in and went into the natural hot springs to get a refreshing swim. From here we made our way to the natural sauna to open our pores for the volcanic mud that we covered ourselves in. To conclude the day we joined each other in a full candle lit dinner buffet of tasty Tico food.

Waking up this morning we enjoyed the biggest breakfast buffet we’ve had this trip. Pancakes, gallo pinto, eggs, bacon, and tons of fresh fruit – delicioso! After filling up we made our way to get ready for the adventures to come. We split into groups, half experiencing the best zip lining over the waterfalls and beautiful greens. While the other half made their way through the rainforest seeing different animals and dinosaurs as they headed to the perfect waterfall to swim in. (Then we switched.) As we write this, our unforgettable last day is coming to an end as we make our way back to our home base for the last night together. We’re looking forward to reminiscing all of the best moments together and our farewell party, but we’re not looking forward to saying “adios” to each other.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 25 & 26

Written by: Sammy, Jake, and Morgan

Hey parents! What a great time we’ve been having these last couple days. We have eaten great food, met lots of new people, and played lots of games. The second day was Orientation Day and even though it was a lot of going over protocols, Costa Rican culture, and health checks we got to have fun around home base by going in the pool and playing games that let us get to know each other.

The third day (yesterday) we had our first surf lesson. We caught lots of waves and had an amazing time. Later in the afternoon, we went back to the beach and played soccer and volleyball. As soon as it started to rain, we headed back to home base and went in the pool. We all had an amazing bonding experience turning it into a whirl pool. To end the day we had a group discussion/ debate on a real life situation about sea turtle conservation efforts in Costa Rica.

Note to families: We’ve added lots of photos from Day 3 below, along with a new blog post for Day 4. Happy reading! -GLA HQ

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 27

Written by Leaders of the Day – Laura, Griffin and Ally

Today we woke up to a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, fresh fruit and warm pastries. We headed down to the beach to meet a conservation organization called Grupo Ecológico Avellanas, who took us on a tour of the mangroves. While informing us of the history of their program, we quickly learned to keep our eyes peeled for the monkeys above who have little care for who their pee and poop landed on! After a traditional lunch of rice, beans, potatoes, sausage and guacamole we spent the afternoon helping clean the mangroves we had toured earlier in the day. After 60 pounds of trash was picked up from the beach and mangroves we split up into groups, did some body surfing in the waves, engaged in an INTENSE soccer match, and played some beach volleyball.

Once back at home base we took showers and ate a large dinner of delicious tacos. We finished the night off in our mentor groups focusing on our leadership and responsibilities with photography and posting on social media. As we write this blog for you all, we also engage in playing intense sessions of billiards and various card games before bedtime. We look forward to tomorrow where we will have our second surf session, and work in the Junquillal Mangrove to plant the mangrove seeds.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 28

Hi Families!!

Breakfast this morning was perfect for our big day out in the water. We had a big plate of eggs with blueberry bagels and sausage. Then we headed down to the beach to meet the surf instructors for our second lesson. This time we all got to catch bigger waves and practice some more of the skills we were being taught. After the two hour surf lesson, we headed back for another delicious meal of stir fry; with carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and chicken. In the afternoon, we arrived at the organic garden at Junquillal, where we got a little dirty… from weed picking to mangrove planting, the rain did not let up. We headed home for a wet bus ride and finished the night off with warm white bean soup. We spent our last hour with mentor groups and then headed to bed after a long day.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 29

Written by Matt, Harry, and Adam

Today was a very exiting and eventful day. As the leaders of the day we woke up everyone as obnoxiously as possible. In the morning we went to contribute to a research project named the big micro plastic survey. This worldwide project takes research from around the world to analyze the types of micro plastics and where they are found. After our service project we body surfed and played boys vs girls soccer on the beach with the boys taking the win. After lunch, we went surfing and everyone caught tons of waves (and had some epic wipeouts, too.) To end our day, we celebrated the birthdays of Katie and Athena.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 30

Written by Addie, Gaby, and Katie

Hi GLA Family!!

Today was full of sweets, service and sun. As the leaders of the day, we woke everyone up with their own song and few loud knocks!! We fueled up with a variety of cereal, eggs and fruit to head out to our chocolate tour. We tasted REAL chocolate made with 70% cacao unlike the fake candy chocolate such as Hersheys which has under 10% cacao. After lunch, we left to complete our service project of the day. This consisted of picking up trash on the beach and helping Yerma (gardener/biologist) with her garden. On the beach, we came across some ripe coconuts that we cracked open and enjoyed as a group. After our dinner, we reflected on our day and opened our minds to the culture we have been immersed in. We also acknowledge preconceived stereotypes about Costa Rica and the rest of the world. We ended our day early to get ready for our extra early morning tomorrow!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 1

Written by Leaders of the Day: Meagan, Mela, and Adam

To start the day off yesterday (7/1) we woke everyone up at 5:30 am and ate breakfast at 6:00. We were on a tight schedule so we left at 6:45 and drove and up towards Playa Flamingo where we met our catamaran. There was a low buzz of energy on the bus and most people slept. Once we got there we had a few minutes on the beach where a few people played finger jousting with the objective being to poke the other person first. When our boat was ready and our group took 2 trips on a dingy from the beach to the ‘Lazy Lizard’. Once on the catamaran our captains made Shirley temples and iced teas and went through the safety briefing before we set off. Everyone filled out the bow, lying on the nets while we made our way to the bay that we would swim at. Everyone had lots of fun singing the songs that were blasted through the speakers. Bodhi and Griffin held the duo for lip syncing and dancing back and forth.

After the captain anchored in the bay, a group went snorkeling and another took turns jumping off the boat to swim to shore. The snorkelers saw a pufferfish, rainbow wraps, and other fish. The others swam to shore and explored the beautiful white sand beach and we learned Avery is the fastest runner of the group in some sand racing. Everyone had joined together in the shallows of the beach and began flipping off one another’s shoulders. Harry and Dom had the highest back flip off Avery and Brady’s shoulders. Everyone was called back to the boat for a delicious lunch of wraps, salad, fruit and cookies. The catamaran had a floating water mat that everyone took turns battling and fitting on as many people on as possible. We then made our way back to shore, blasting Kenny Chesney and Rihanna. We said gracias and then took our ride back to Home Base.

We had a late lunch of chicken fingers with rice beans, and salad. Then we got a half hour of tech time for a reward of not clogging the toilets all day! (In Costa Rica, you can’t flush the toilet paper, so it’s been an adjustment.)

Jairo Perez the pro surfer came and gave a speech. If you don’t know, he is a 2x Costa Rican champion in his division and has set out chasing his Olympic dream. He was an alternate for the recent 2020 Tokyo games. His story was very inspirational and the background he came from and how he worked his way through life to the title of pro surfer. He now owns a coffee farm and brought and brought some for the opportunity for us to purchase. A portion of the proceeds support an orphanage in the Central Valley and provides surf excursions to the beach for the kids.

Dinner came around which was good as always and then we had tech time of course, and then our leadership circle consisting of shout outs, highlights and takeaways. It was the best day so far, lots of fun. Happy Canada Day!

Meagan, Mela, and Adam

BLOG POST FOR JULY 2

Written by Leaders of the Day: Sean T.,Brady M., Brady R., Brady M.

Today we had an easy going morning while we waited out the rain. We kicked things off with a yoga session. This was equally exhausting as it was relaxing. We then had some pool time where we tossed around a ball and played Marco Polo, and made a huge whirlpool in the shallow end again. Afterwards Rodrigo taught us about languages and similarities between them. We all learned some new Spanish phrases throughout the lesson. Overall this was a very chill and relaxing day. A truly great way to wait out the storm. 🙂

Written by Morgan, Matteo, and Avery

What a successful day! We picked up 21 kg (46 lbs) of trash on the beach Playa Lagartillo and 50 kg (111 lbs) of trash in the Las Delicias community around the soccer field. During beach cleanup, a local came and thanked us all, saying how happy she was that we were cleaning. After cleanup, we all played soccer with a few members of the community. We had dinner after settled down, to listen to a super inspiring presentation about Mentor Rodrigo’s sustainable house that he built in Brazil, all with reclaimed wood and up-cycled materials. We are all excited for tomorrow!

Today started off great with our LODS Bodhi, Carter, and Dom doing the morning wake up call. We then traveled to our community service cite, Las Delicias where we picked up trash, cleaned up the community center, and painted the benches around the soccer field yellow and green. We then ended the morning with a very fun game of soccer.

After lunch we returned back to our community service site, we were taught three traditional games. We finally ended the day with a cooking class where we cooked tortillas and tried beñuelos with honey.

We concluded the day with another delicious dinner, our nightly chow circle, and a game of jeopardy before heading to bed for a great sleep.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 26

Day 2 in Costa Rica, brought to you By Olivia Rhea. First things first, to start our day we enjoyed a very nice breakfast and a cool welcoming to those who joined. After breakfast, we all got ready and gathered together for a presentation that lead to our very well known swim test. We flew through our test like race horses.

We then all kicked back till lunch time. At lunch, we had some great chicken and rice that just set us up for the whole day up until dinner time!

Throughout our day up until dinner, we had some local speakers speak with us about this very beautiful country they are from! It was very interesting and amazing to get to know all the different things that go on here and get to know more of our surroundings.

As we were wrapping up our talk with the speakers, we got a break that got us rebooted for the rest of our presentation. After our presentation, we had free time up until dinner, we all came together as a group, played some games, and got to know each other a lot more.

As dinner was being prepped we had a little more free time and enjoyed ourselves. Dinner came, we grubbed our food, finished up & cleaned up! At last we all gathered as a group for a group meeting and shared our roses, buds, and thorns of the day and trip! At the end of our day on Day 2 we had a very chill time!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 27

Day 3 in Costa Rica, narrated by Carter Donald. We had an amazing day, but as you know, all great days start with a great breakfast. Today we had cereal with milk, fresh fruit, and some toast. We all enjoyed breakfast and were prepared for the day ahead.

Following breakfast, we had some time to get ready. We then traveled to a nearby field that we will work on. When we arrived, we were greeted by some locals who were kind enough to share an indoor space to put our bags and rest if needed. We began working on the field by preparing the land to plant new grass. However, after we took our first break it began to rain and we had to end early.

To occupy the extra time, we decided to play soccer at a nearby indoor field. It was a fun and action packed game, and even our leaders decided to join in.

After the soccer game we headed back to base came where an amazing shower and lunch were awaiting us. For lunch we had chicken and rice, chips, beet salad, beans, and mango. It was just what we needed to power back up.

After lunch we had a break before a short activity. For this activity we worked in groups to engage in a discussion regarding the education system in Malaysia.

Soon after our discussion we began conducting our Spanish placement interviews, and we then played a few games and split off into our respective groups.

To transition into the end of the day we had a great dinner that consisted of fish, papaya, potatoes, and salad.

We ended the day with some shout-outs and Rose Bud Thorn.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 28

Day 4 in Costa Rica, brought to you by Lily Knudsen. Today was another great day! For breakfast we had pancakes, fresh watermelon and pineapple, and orange juice. After, we went to be prepared for the service project.

During the project today, we leveled out the ground and started laying sod. Since we had gotten money exchanged last night, we all headed down to the market for some Costa Rican snacks to try.

After we came back to home base, we had some delicious lunch. We had pollo, or chicken, with rice and beans, watermelon, cabbage salad, and carambola juice (starfruit). We then had some free time. everyone got in the pool to cool off from the surprisingly hot weather, where we played frisbee.

To occupy the rest of our free time we played cards together.

For a few hours after, we worked on our Spanish with our adjusted groups. After Spanish Class, our delectable dinner was ready which was: beef, corn, potatoes, plátanos, with a sauce, and pineapple juice.

We ended the day with a special guest speaker to talk about the history and background of Costa Rica.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 29

Day 5 in Costa Rica, recounted by Baron Boykin. We started off the day with another great breakfast consisting of tortillas de queso (a bit different than quesadillas) with some sour cream, fruits, and orange juice. After breakfast and once we were all ready, we headed out for another day at the service site.

Today at the service site we worked on repainting all the tires, continuing to level out the ground, and digging a trench for a fence that we will later place. During a break we walked down to the local convenience store with the money we had exchanged.

At around noon we headed back to home base where we were greeted with lunch. For lunch today we had rice, pork, salad, fresh mangos, a couple different salsas for the pork, and a drink called tamarindo.

After our lunch, we had a mentor group activity. Everyone was split into two groups and in each group everyone presented an object that was valuable to them.

Following our mentor group activity we had an hour of free time. For some people this hour was spent in the pool or playing cards. For others it was just simply relaxing in or outside their rooms.

After our free time, the remaining hours before dinner was spent in our Spanish classes. For dinner we had tomato soup with chicken, chips and avocados, watermelon, and cold tea.

To end out the day we had evening meeting where we had some shout-outs and we shared highlights and lowlights for the day.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 30

Day 6 in Costa Rica, recounted by Ian Ferman. While today may have started off on the wrong foot when we had to cancel both our visit to a nearby high school, as well as a hike due to an impending storm, we took advantage of our newly-found free time.

For breakfast, we ate gallo pinto – a classic Costa Rican dish – along with toast, scrambled eggs, and cas juice. Shortly thereafter, we left for the service site where we continued to build a fence around the soccer field and re-paint the tires that divided the area.

During break, while it coincidentally began to rain, Calef – a local kid – challenged all of us to a game of ajedrez, or chess. While Calef took us down one by one, the rain cleared up and we got back to work. After more work leveling out the ground for the fence and coating the tires in a 3rd layer of paint, the rain came back – but this time, it was here to stay.

We swiftly cleaned up and made our way back to homebase, where we played cards to pass the time until lunch. For lunch, we had chicken florentino, tuna-banana salad, and a creamy dressing. After this, we left for the indoor soccer fields.

There, we played a round robin with teams of 5. Despite being exhausted after our games, our Spanish teachers met us at the fields for a review of vocab regarding the parts of the body, along with partner massages and yoga. On our way home from this, we stopped at a panadería, or bakery, where we got all types of sweet and savory baked goods.

Upon our arrival at homebase, we engaged in a culminating Spanish group activity where we labeled the parts of the body. Following this, we sat down for a dinner consisting of white beans, string beans, steamed veggies, and rice. Our day ended with some shout-outs and more card games.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 1

Day 7 retold by Bastian Boykin. We started off the day with news that zip lining was postponed for a few days due to the risk that came with the rain we had the previous night. To help us out, for breakfast, we had empanadas, cut up papayas, and a sweet juice.

With an activity needed to replace zip lining, it was decided that we would go to a museum that was about an hour drive away in San José. We toured the museum learning about the history, important stories, the wars, and founders that shaped Costa Rica. Immediately after the museum, we walked to a nearby market and were given half an hour to buy whatever “souvenirs” we desired. There were many stalls filled with items, packed together tightly. At around noon we headed back to home base to have a lunch that consisted of rice, beans, meat, avocado, and salsa along with some fruit and juice to wash it all down.

After lunch, we were given some time to rest, before we would head back into the city where Spanish class would be hosted. For Spanish, we toured the city while learning vocabulary that could help in such an environment. We also visited an important Church in the city, and learned why is was respected and important. The end of Spanish class had us at Juan Carlos’s house (also where the 14-day Spanish and adventure people stayed) to watch and learn more about Spanish, and Costa Rica as well, alongside smoothies.

We ended the night with dinner at home base that consisted of, burritos filled with meat and cheese, as well as salsa and lettuce for an add on to the burrito. We had strawberry pastry for dessert and concluded the night with a meeting.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 2

Today our group had a day full of activities. First, we all headed down for breakfast which consisted of delicious french toast, pineapple, and our normal beverages: coffee, orange juice, and a new kiwi yogurt drink. After eating we all went back to our rooms to get ready for our trip to the Sanatorio. We arrived at the abandoned hospital then started exploring. This hospital was built around the 1800s by a man with a daughter suffering from tuberculosis. Some parts of the hospital were damaged from a volcano eruption nearby, so some parts we could not wander inside of. But all the parts that were open were very interesting to see knowing the history of this place. On our way back from the hospital we stopped at a local ice cream parlor and enjoyed delicious flavors including oreo, mango, dulce de leche, chocolate, strawberry, and more.

After this we all headed back to the hotel for lunch. Today we had fried chicken, rice and beans, ranch, and coleslaw. After eating lunch we had our mentor groups then headed back to our rooms to prepare for our latin dance class. The class was very intense and we learned some basic salsa, merengue, reggaetón, cumbia, bachata, zumba, reggae, and samba. After this we were all very tired but still we headed over to the soccer field to play one game. Finally, we went back to the hotel for a dinner consisting of spaghetti and a meat sauce, garlic bread, salad, and watermelon. We had our evening meeting then ended the night with card games.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 3

Day 9 in Costa Rica brought to you by Eliza Grimnes. Today we went back to more of a normal schedule beginning with a 7:30 am breakfast of cereal, mango, pineapple, kiwi smoothie, and orange juice. After eating we promptly got ready and transferred to the work site to continue our service project. Today at the service project we cleared out more grass and moved in more sod. Some people worked a little bit on the fence.

After about 3 hours of work we transferred back to our quaint hotel for lunch. Our lunch consisted of fish, mashed potatoes, salad, and strawberries. After finishing lunch a group of a few people went out to go to the park and the everyone else stayed at the hotel and had pool time. We tested out the jacuzzi for the first time!

Once everyone was back from free time we began our Spanish classes from 3:30-7. Everyone broke into their 3 groups of basic, intermediate, and advanced Spanish classes for about 2 hours. For the end of our Spanish class all the groups joined back together for some Spanish videos. For dinner we had pozole soup, rice, chips, and cas juice. To finish off the night we played a few rounds of cards and some truth or dare before heading back to our rooms and going to sleep.

Today is the Fourth of July. For our breakfast we had tortillas de queso with strawberries and orange juice. After that we went to do service for the soccer field and all helped plant grass and the boys worked on the fence. The local kids helped us with planting the grass. We also had a delicious and nutritious jugo de mango. Then we came back to the hotel after a long day of service . We had a cultural banquet where we all shared cultural greetings that represented our groups that we were in. Then we gathered to get into groups for our Spanish classes. That consisted of a really funny puppet show. For dinner we had chicken tacos and a juice that tasted like cough syrup. We finished our night with some Karaoke songs for the Fourth of July. My favorite song that we sang was Dancing Queen by Abba.

Today was a very exciting day as we finally got to go zip-lining. To kick off our adventure we had avocado toast and huevos de jamón along with some apples and orange juice. Then we set off on an hour long drive to the zip-lines which were a little past the city of Cartago.

Once we got there we had a 20 minute hike up a whole bunch of stairs. It was rough but worth it for the amazing time we all had zip-lining. There were thirteen zip lines in total and two of them went straight down!

After all the excitement, we headed back to home base for lunch which consisted of delicious spaghetti alfredo, garlic bread, and lemon tea. We made a quick run to Maxi Palí, the local grocery store, to stock up on snacks and other goodies.

Then we had our Spanish class and got to tour around a new city, Orosi. We saw one of the oldest churches and got a chance to shop around. Once we were back at home base, we had a dinner of rice, beef stew, pineapple, and watermelon juice. We finished out the day with shoutouts.

Day 12 in Costa Rica, recounted by Jack Shapiro. We began our morning with a new meal for many: Chorreades (corn pancakes). These were topped with our choice of sour cream or syrup and accompanied by OJ and papaya.

We then headed off to our first adventure of the day, hiking to the top of Monte Sky to see the breathtaking view of one of Costa Rica’s natural waterfalls. Accompanied by Omar, our driver, we traversed through streams and steep inclines to marvel in the beauty of what we accomplished.

After taking photos and refreshing ourselves with the mist of the waterfall, we made our way down the mountain and swiftly headed to home base for lunch. This consisted of chicharrón, yuka, coleslaw salad, and cas juice. After a short break, we boarded the bus for an hour long drive to San José city, though due to traffic we changed routes and headed to Cartago for a tour of the city.

Ahead of Cartago’s final soccer match playing at 8, we wandered through the buzzing city with the streets filled with cheering and celebrating people. We first visited La Basilica de Los Angeles, the main church of Cartago, and later visited a crowded market where some were left gagging on the fumes from the fish market. After watching locals dance and cheer to music on one of the city’s busy streets in preparation for the game, we took a stop at McDonalds for a quick snack and headed back to home base.

On our break, we started a new GLA tradition of painting everyone’s nails to the color of their choice on our free time followed by watching Zootopia. For dinner, we had pollo asada with rice, salad, and iced tea. After a relaxing break, we packed for the long road trip tomorrow to end the day.

Day 13 here in Costa Rica from your favorite people!

Written by Olivia Rhea, back at it again. To start our day, we had a very decent breakfast to get us going for our 5 hour drive to Uvita, Costa Rica! During the drive we all napped, made a pit stop for bathroom breaks and snacks! We hit the road again for a few more hours after the break. We then arrived at home base #2 & had a great fast lunch before we had to head to our surf lessons! Surf lessons were such an exciting experience! We had two separate groups. While one group got to learn the basics of surf, the other group played on the beach. It was a blast to finish our day off with an amazing sunset at the playa, & our very flavorful hamburgers for dinner!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 8

Day 14 in Costa Rica written by Eli Cutler. To start off day two in Uvita we had gallo pinto, eggs, and plantains for breakfast. We then went for a quick bus ride to a river. The river had a deep spot that we jumped into off of a high platform. There was also a waterfall that some less sensible people from another group were jumping off of. We then went back to our hotel for some pool time and lunch. For lunch we had chicken, beans, rice, fried yucca, and salad.

After lunch, we went to Marino Ballena National Park where we learned about the history of how it became a national park and the whales that migrate there every year to give birth. We then got to swim around and we played catch in the ocean. We then went back to the hotel for showers before going souvenir shopping. Afterwards we went back to the beach at Marino Ballena for the sunset. Then we went out for pizza at a restaurant. It was really good. Finally, we went to the supermarket.

Day 15 retold by Zachary Koterwas. Starting our day off late at 9am we had fluffy pancakes and fresh fruit for breakfast with orange juice. Thereafter we packed to leave to travel back to home based in Cartago.

During the long road trip through the mountains, we stopped at a store to grab snacks and drinks. Many of us had empanadas, pollo (chicken) or queso (cheese), then continued on our trip.

Shortly after arriving, we put our bags away and sat down for lunch. We had rice, beans, chicken, homemade barbecue sauce, and salad with a mango juice.

Juan Carlos offered to anyone that wanted to, to play soccer at one of his indoor fields. Many tired, decided to relax and stay back. While others went to play.

When we arrived we warmed up with short game. If you scored you would become goalie. Afterwards, Bastian and Baron being team captains, choose the teams and we began to play. Everyone played well and had fun. Once the game ended we took a quick break and decided to play a quick game of world cup.

Later at home base, dinner was ready. We had tortillas, a chicken and potato filling, salad, mango with a peach tea. Afterwards many went to the pool for night swimming where they played taps and keep away.

Day 16 in Costa Rica, written by Eva Vannier. We woke up today for our first day back at Rinconcito Verde since the beach. For breakfast, we had cereal with strawberries and bananas, with a choice of coffee, orange juice or smoothie to drink. After finishing the delicious breakfast we transferred to a hike called Hacienda Central. The drive up was a little sketchy because we were inches away from a cliff and it was VERY bumpy. It was such a tight fit that the bus ended up getting dented. After the drive up, there was a guide waiting for us when we arrived. The hike up the volcano was up a steady incline and was quite tiring. We couldn’t hike too far up the volcano due to the fact that it is still considered active.

After finishing the hike we went into the restaurant at the bottom. Some people got pollo en salsa there for lunch and others waited till we got back to the hotel to eat chicken con queso with some rice and vegetables mixed in. There was a choice of a salad on the side. After finishing lunch we had some free time for about two hours until our Spanish class at 3:30.

During Spanish class we all joined together and we made some cookies or galletas.

For dinner we had chopsuey with a side of bread. There was a choice of having salad. After a long day everyone went to their separate rooms and went to sleep early!

Today we went back to a more normal schedule beginning the day at 7:30 with a breakfast of gallo pinto, eggs, water melon, orange juice, smoothie and toast. After finishing breakfast, we transferred over to the service site where we continued placing grass and painting the fence. A young local boy named Dereck had three adorable kittens and he let some of us hold them.

After finishing about 3 hours of work we went back to the hotel for a lunch of pastel de poyo y tortillas, salad and a juice with pineapple, watermelon, and mango in it.

After finishing lunch we jumped right into an activity called the OMG activity or One Main Goal activity where we split into two groups otherwise known as mentor groups. In these groups we talked and brainstormed about goals and things we can take away from this program. We are going to create videos showing our goals and we will submit them.

Then we had our last Spanish classes where we worked on our final project. The basic Spanish group wrote a play about the legend La Llarona, intermediate group wrote about their experiences in Costa Rica and traditional music and dance, and the advanced group wrote poems.

Dinner was albondigas en salsa, piccadillo de plátano, salad and pineapple, and the juice was passion fruit.

Finally, we had an evening meeting and ended the night by watching the movie, Knives Out.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 12

Written by Christopher Ting

To start the day, we all woke up to the most important meal of the day. For breakfast we had tortillas de queso with the option of lemon tea for a beverage. Strawberries and papaya were also served.

After a hearty breakfast, we boarded the bus at around 8:15 to tour the city of San José. During the tour we walked down the streets with our tour guides. We learned about facts and the history of the monuments. Our tour groups saw the San José legislative building, the town, murals (many art had propaganda relating to the government), art tiles, a boarding school, and the Plaza de Cultura. Some of us bought snacks to enjoy from Starbucks or McDonald’s before heading back.

For lunch, we were served beef tacos, rice, pineapple, and salad. To flavor the meal, we were able to add beef broth.

When we finished lunch we went back to working at the community service site. Everyone had a job to do. We placed down grass, mixed/installed concrete, and painted the fence. At the end of the three hours, a lot of progress was made.

As soon as we returned back to the residence, we took a short break from the compact schedule. At around 6 pm we worked on the OMG module which stands for “one meaningful goal.” We set goals influenced by this camp that we plan to accomplish by next year. We wrote about the process and things we would have to change to accomplish our goals.

Next was dinner. For the last meal of the day we had chicken broth soup with chips and avocado. At the end of the day, everyone went back to their beds for the next GLA adventure.

Today we woke up to powdered-sugar-covered French toast and orange juice for breakfast.

After breakfast, we went hiking at Prusia national park. Longest of all of our hikes but the most calm. Starting at a steady incline, we entered a trail that led to a haunted tree. As we were walking we found a large dark tree different from the rest. But then soon realized that it wasn’t the tree we were looking for. After taking pictures at the actual haunted tree we continued our hike and stopped at a beautiful view, overlooking all of Cartago. Shortly after we make our way back to the bus.

Once we arrived, we put our bags away and sat down for lunch. We had rice and chicken, salad, a spicy yet sour chile, and guava juice. After lunch we drove to the work site. We had high hopes it wasn’t going to rain or the storm would shortly pass. Unfortunately, it continued to rain so we played with a soccer ball inside. We awaited the ok to head to Juan Carlos’s indoor soccer field. Once we got it, we drove to the field to finish our OMG activity, which is ten minutes a day on Duolingo, and played a game of soccer.

After soccer we had free time until dinner. For dinner we had fish, fried plantains, and beet salad.

Day 20 in Costa Rica, written by Alex Dates

For our final day we started breakfast later than usual before our rafting trip. For breakfast we had empanadas with meat and cheese and some watermelon on the side.

After a bit of free time we went rafting, it was split up into three groups of people. Rafting was almost cancelled because of the rain making it more dangerous and we ended up needing to take a shorter route than planned. That didn’t stop it from being a very exhilarating adventure though!

After we got back, we went for a final shopping session in Cartago. We went to a souvenir shop and many people bought various items for the memories or to give to family members. We then went to an ice cream place and a grocery store for any extra snacks. It was an overall great time!

Finally, we had a heartwarming appreciation circle session right before our special fiesta dinner. The fiesta dinner was special burgers and handmade cake pieces for all of us. After which we had a nice party of appreciation and goodbye to Juan Carlos, our driver Omar, and our cooks.

That concludes the 21-day Costa Rica Spanish Service Adventure. Thanks for following the blog and our adventures with us! Tomorrow we return to the States!

Costa Rica: Spanish Service Adventure (July 22 – August 4, 2022)

PROGRAM PHOTO ALBUM

Thanks for the checking out the blog for this Global Leadership Adventures program!

Here are a few things you can expect:

  1. We typically receive 2-3 blog posts per week here at GLA Headquarters from our program staff and students, so please don’t be alarmed if you don’t see a blog post daily – that’s totally normal.
  2. Blog updates sent on weekends may not be posted until Monday.
  3. Due to many factors, including but not limited to internet accessibility, photos may not always be available to post onto the blog. Sometimes onsite program staff are only able to send text back to Headquarters, where our team updates the blog.

Cell Phone Policy: The GLA cell phone policy is currently in place this summer to help foster meaningful connections between students. This means your student’s phone will be collected every day and returned to them throughout the program during designated spaces of time we call ‘tech time’. Actual tech times and regularity will vary greatly by program location. During designated ‘tech time’, your student may use their phones as they wish. Please note that your student may not always choose to use this time to get a hold of their parents. If you are not hearing directly from your student each day, you can assume that no news is good news! We strongly recommend you follow the blog to follow your students’ experience without talking to them every day. If you are a parent and would like to get in touch with your student directly, you can call us at +1-619-758-3031 and we can set up a formal time for you to connect with your student.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and we hope you enjoy following along on these unforgettable adventures.

Hello everyone!!!

We started early in the morning with airport pickups and they will continue until midnight, but we are very excited to finally have our new group of students who are ready for 14 days of fun, adventure and learning in beautiful Costa Rica.

Tomorrow when the group is complete, we will start with the orientation and a nice tour of town.

Stay tuned for more updates from the students about their adventures.

PS. Not pictured – Dylan Donner, Sienna Lipton, Eos Perez, Noah van Der Ven, and Callum Buchanan who came on later flights!

Hasta mañana!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 23

The group is finally complete.

This morning we all had the opportunity to meet one another through our orientation activities. We began the day talking about the program and what we should expect for the next two weeks. We are a very big group, so we are making the effort to bond during the free time that we do have within this busy schedule. After a morning of orientation activities we headed to Cartago city and learned about Costa Rican history and culture. Our local leaders took the time to explain to us the treasures of Cartago city, including a visit to the Basilica and the local farmers market. Some of us got to purchase fruits we had never tried before, such as Rambutan!

We also got the chance to practice some Costa Rican phrases we learned this morning ( Pura Vida, and Vive Vive Cartago!) with the local community. It was great to actually get a response back with a simple gesture- we are feeling welcomed already. After a great walk around the city we headed back to the home base in Paraiso and finished up the day with our nightly meeting. We are very excited for the next couple of days. Tomorrow we will be heading to our first service site and can’t wait to meet the Ujarras community.

Pura Vida.

¡Hola!

With arrival and orientation complete, Day 3 gave our GLA group the chance to have a full day of activities. Busy might be an understatement. Whether it was waking up at 6 to get your body moving, or sleeping until 7:25 before a 7:30 breakfast, everyone was excited to experience a true GLA day! A breakfast of Gallo pinto, eggs, and fresh fruit quickly disappeared before we gathered in our mentor groups for our first day of service work. This morning’s goal was to put the finishing touches on an ongoing project for the Ujarras community. Meeting the local children (and kittens) made the time fly by, and it gave everyone a glimpse into the impacts of our service. The tasks included repainting tires in festive colors, clearing out space, mixing concrete, and putting down grass to finish a soccer field. Now that we have finished the project, the local government will provide a playground to make the new community space complete.

After lunch, we shifted our focus toward developing our leadership skills back at homebase.

In mentor groups, we received a prompt about the impact of English on Costa Rican schools. This provided us with the opportunity to meet new people and strengthen our debating skills. It also gave us a different viewpoint on teaching English to local children in our upcoming service days.

Next, we got to put the Spanish in Spanish Service Adventure on our first day of class! To assess our initial level of proficiency, we conversed with our teachers Jafed, Jessica, and Adriana. Their questions ranged from how old we are to how we would spend 1 million dollars, and the benefits of language and cultural immersion in Costa Rica became clear. We look forward to the future classes and know the experience will be like no other!

To finish off the day (and tire us out), we played soccer at nearby fields with local kids. It challenged our Spanish vocabulary and created another chance to interact with the community. This group might be big, but everyone is already getting to know each other over card games and shared excitement for this GLA trip!

Pura Vida!

¡Bienvenidos!

Now that four days of GLA have flown by, we were ready to truly immerse ourselves in Costa Rica. Starting off the day a little early, we woke up around 6:45 to enjoy a breakfast consisting of tortillas con queso, fruit, and delicious orange juice, we soon set off on a once-and-a-lifetime ziplining adventure.

Despite shrieks and freaks from numerous GLA students, we conquered the ropes. From sloths to ‘skeeters to soaring heights, the embarkment was something you have to do yourself to believe. Our hungry students arrived back at home-base to a delicious, homemade Costa Rican meal which included scrumdiddlyumptious pork, lentils, and rice. A well-deserved rest before beginning our first full Spanish lessons.

Taught by our team of fantastic teachers Jafed, Jessica, and Adriana, each and every one of us has already begun to improve our conversational and grammatical skills, which we are able to apply daily to talk to the locals here in Cartago! Making authentic tortillas, sharing family recipes, and playing ‘Charades en español,’ classes are never a bore. After Spanish we enjoyed our last meal of the day, a flaversome chicken soup filled with avocado, cheese, and pieces of chips. ¡Que Delicioso!

Sour weather forced the group indoors for our nightly meeting, but nothing could stop us from having fun! Finalmente, a surprise guest speaker, Jose, came to talk to us about the enriched history of Costa Rica. We were blessed by his presence as he was a very knowledgeable and kindhearted fellow, and all of us here at GLA appreciate his willingness to teach us. It was a fantastic day here in Cartago and we are ready for what tomorrow brings us!

Cartago Vive!

Hola a todos!

French toast was gobbled as everyone prepared for a long day’s work. Our first day’s work at the school consisted of starting the soccer field and playground. All the children were super friendly and had fun playing and talking with us on their lunch break. After we returned to home base and had a large lunch, we took a Walmart run to restock on snacks and go shopping. It was a great immersion experience since none of the workers understood english. We then returned to town to have Spanish class where we went around Paraiso learning new vocabulary talking with locals. After coming back to home base we finished our spanish lesson by deciphering traditional Costa Rica legends told to us in spanish. We finished off the day with our nightly meetings, tech time, and surprise karaoke. Closing off another great day in Paraiso, Costa Rica.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 28

Hola!

Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for: Laundry day! After working hard and wearing clothes a few times too many, we were glad it finally came.

Our day started with a nice, traditional American breakfast of cocoa krispies, cornflakes, and milk, and headed off to the school, where half the group worked in the classrooms and the others worked on building the soccer field and playground. Some of us assisted kindergarteners while others worked with the elementary school grades. The children were ecstatic to spend time with their new friends, and sad to see them leave. As each GLA students Spanish was improving by the second, the view of such progress in the construction work only motivated us further to accomplish our goals within this community. With much to get done we worked tirelessly. Luckily, the Costa Rican weather was in our favor today, and sunny skies only appeared after the work was done.

Lunch was spectacular. The fresh chicharrones helped us all summon our forces for today’s intensive Spanish class: reenacting the legends of Costa Rica. Each performance was phenomenal in its own way. It really helped us put our newly acquired Spanish skills into practice. After watching a few short films in Spanish, accompanied by laughs and tears, we had a delicious chop suey dinner.

It is now time for bed, and it won’t be easy finding sleep knowing there will be a dance class tomorrow!

We are all looking forward to it.

¡Buenas noches!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 29

Hi everyone!

We are now over halfway through our program! This experience has been the truest example of time flies by when you are having fun. For our service work in the morning, we continued working on the soccer field and playground. However, during our time at the school, we also get to spend time helping and connecting with the kids there. Whether it’s singing with kindergarteners, teaching English, or listening about their daily lives, talking with the students motivates us to continue our hard work.

We then came back to the home base to refuel and get our bodies ready for dance class! We got the privilege to learn Samba, Reguetón, Cumbia, and many more types of Latin dances. Even though not everyone considers themselves a dancer, each person was more than excited to immerse themselves in the movements. Art is an integral part of culture, so dance class brought us more appreciation for the latin culture we are learning about. The experience was also incredibly fun and I counted plenty of smiling faces.

After the workout of the century, we made our way to a couple shops to buy souvenirs. For many of us, this trip has been our first time dealing with currency, so buying things has been an interesting learning experience. Being able to practice Spanish and sharpen our skills, especially when it comes to talking about money, has definitely been a favorite part of the shopping process.

In the evening, we showered off our hard work of the day and ate another great meal. With no Spanish class today, we used the extra time to bond and enjoy each other’s company. In our nightly meeting, people shared their favorite parts of the day and like always, there was an abundance of excitement for the days to come!

¡Chao!

Today we hiked the Turrialba volcano, the 2nd-tallest of over 200 volcanic formations in Costa Rica. Its impressive 3,300 meter height is dwarfed only by the neighboring Irazú Volcano. Our guide, César, provided us backstory on the Turrialba Volcano: located within its own national park (also the site of one of Costa Rica’s páramos — forests 3,000 meters or higher), the volcano last had activity in 2016 and last exploded in 1866. The volcano is also proximate to an indigenous town, where its residents still speak their native language to this day.

We later spent our last day of Spanish class in the park! During that time, all three of the groups worked on different projects for a final presentation. Maestra Jessica’s group and Maestro Jafeth’s group worked separately on two productions, both entirely in Spanish. Maestra Adriana’s group held the Pura Vida Awards, given to notable people or moments from the trip so far. While we were sad to see it end, we enjoyed Spanish class and the opportunities we were afforded to immerse ourselves in the lenguaje y cultura of Costa Rica.
