BLOG POST FOR JUNE 18

Hola todos,

Wow! What a day! Today was both tiring and exciting all at once. All of the anticipations that were built up exploded today. We played so many games for everyone to get to know their new friends!

Our group has all safely arrived at our hotel for the night. We took pictures right before bed when everyone was cozy in their pod with their roommates for the night! Luka is the only student with a late arrival time, but everyone will get to meet him bright and early in the morning! We leave in the morning to take our trip to Homebase in Parismina with stops for fun along the way.

There’s so much excitement from students to start working with our local partners and community. They are all so excited to support turtle conservation and other environmental projects. Everyone is also looking forward to many great adventures ahead of us. Our group is so ready to learn about the local culture, language, and environment from the locals.

This is our first blog. This will be a way for us to share our daily experiences, learnings, and adventures! We hope that you enjoy this blog as a way to experience this journey alongside us throughout the next week. The next blog post will be written by our leaders of the day!

Until next time!

Sea turtle initiative team (Mag, Alysse, and Marco)

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 19

Hola!

Everyone woke up still a little tired but excited for our journey to Parismina. We loaded the bus and were on our way. After a couple hours on the bus we arrived to our ziplining adventure. During the adventure it started to rain, then quckly escalated. We were all a little weary at first but then everyone embraced the rain. Seeing the rain in the rainforest was ironic. During the zipling we saw some cool animals! We saw a toucan, a tapier, and a sloth. The ziplines were very thrilling and crazy! Coming back from zipling completly soaked we had a fulfilling lunch with yummy plantains, rice, and beans. We all got to put on dry clothes and continued our journey to Parismina, almost like a bus karaoke! We arrived soon at a market where we all were able to get snacks for the remaining duration of the trip.

The next part of our day was arriving at the docks to take the boat to Parismina. We arrived after seeing some Spider Monkeys along the way. We were all amazed at the beauty of the lodge that we are staying and settled into our rooms and headed straight to check out the beach. We did group appreciations at the beach and had lots of fun. The group bonded over the amazement of the beach.

We played a few games and had dinner . Lights out at 9:45!

Saludos,
A collective group of creative students

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 20 & 21

Hola, this is Gavin, Lance, Eli, and Colin. This entry will cover the events of yesterday and today. Yesterday, we woke up early morning and primarily focused on orientation and found out the schedule for our remaining week or so in Costa Rica. Later on, we went down to the beach, swam some, and came back to home base. At around 8, we went on our first night patrol, which entails looking out for turtles until about midnight. We did not find any turtles, however, we found a lot of tracks. The last of us came back around 00:30, and it was the best sleep of our lives.

This morning, we woke up and got ready for a boat tour. We saw a lot of different wildlife, some of the species we encountered are Crocodile, Caiman, Red Poisonous Dart Frog, Roseate Spoonbill, and some Spider Monkeys. Afterwards, we went into the village of Parismina to get a tour and learn about the culture of Costa Rica. Next, we got a demonstration on how to tag a turtle and make an artificial nest. Later on in the day, we did beach clean. As the finale of the day, we bared witness to the hatching of nine Leatherback Turtles, and watched them crawl into the ocean. We then rode in the back of trucks through the jungle back to home base, ate dinner, and did a turtle debate.

Stay tuned for the next update. Saludos!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 22

Written by Lucas, Jack, Olivia C, and Aidan

Hola todos,

In the morning, we feasted on eggs, watermelon, pineapples, and arepas. Arepas are a type of sweet bread. While we were waiting for the rain to clear, we played a few games. After the rain cleared up, our local director, Jason, led us on a tour through the farm near the lodge. On the tour, we saw many native plants such as the breadfruit, cocoplum, shampoo flower, plantain, sensy-plant and others. Jason also showed us how he opens a coconut with a machete. On the tour we saw howler monkeys in the trees above us. A few of them were quite annoyed with our presence and threw a few pieces of fruit at us. We also saw lover’s grasshoppers, a caiman, baby iguanas, and a freshwater turtle. When we got back to the lodge, we ate lunch and then had time to nap. Later, we headed to the beach to clean up the trash. This made us more mindful of how plastic trash affects our planet and harms marine wildlife. Then, we had a quick swim and enjoyed the waves. We headed back to the lodge to shower and relax until dinner. And now, we are about to head out to our second night patrol.

Hasta manana!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 23

Hola this is Harper, Grace, Erin and Oskar.

Today was a fun day! First we rode into town in the back of the trucks. We then made empanadas with locals. Afterwards we explored and shopped throughout town stopping to buy smoothies and food as a group. After finishing our food, we made our way to the Casona to relax before the art fair that was scheduled for later on. We played group activities and card games during our wait in order to pass the time. When the art fair arrived, we bought many different pieces of jewelry and art made by the locals. 10% of proceeds went to the organization that helps preserve the beaches and marine life, while the other 90% went directly to the locals. After the art fair we went to the field to play volleyball and soccer with some of the local kids in the town. After a long, fun day, we went back to home base to relax and rest. Finally, we headed to the beach to do night patrol.

Saludos! Pura vida!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 24

Written by Maia, Ava, and Olivia K.

Hey guys,

The first activity of the day was touring a local organic vanilla farm. We learned how to grow vanilla beans and how difficult it is for a farm to obtain organic status. After fighting with all the mosquitos on the farm, we came back to the homebase for lunch. Towards the afternoon we cleaned and painted the park benches in Parasmina village. We took breaks in between and went shopping for snacks in the local shops.

After we finished painting the benches, we went to the volunteer center to have a dance lesson. A local came by to teach us a variety of dances. This included salsa, macarena, cha cha , and more. Towards the end of the lesson it started to rain and we began to make our way back to home base. After a needed dinner of fried chicken and fries we went out to our last night patrol.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 25

Written by Skyler, Sofia, and Olivia S

Hola!! We started off the day with an early morning boat/bus ride to the Pacaure River for rafting with long awaited phone time on the way there. We went down the river in 4 rafts and had fun getting soaked by the rapids and jumping into the water(and onto other rafts). We played games such as king of the hill and nobody was eaten by crocodiles. After a struggle to change into dry cloths we then stopped at a restaurant nearbye for buffet-style lunch. On the bus ride back to homebase we sang songs (We Are Young 🙂 ), took naps, and enjoyed the view of the banana farms around us. After taking the speedboat home, half of us quickly changed to go swimming on the beach for the last time, while the other half had a siesta and packed. While at the beach there were push up and arm wrestling contests (and our own Mentor, Marco was the winner!). We had fun taking pictures and then enjoyed our last dinner at homebase. It consisted of empanadas, salad, and brownies! Now we are all packing to head home after countless exciting adventures together!

Pura Vida!! 🙂 <3

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 26

Written by Zach and Luka

Good morning Costa Rica!!!

Our trip to Costa Rica was a blast. Going ziplining, rafting, and volunteering made this trip life-changing. Our day started with packing and cleaning up all our messes. We then had a delightful breakfast of eggs, toast, and sandía (watermelon) from the incredible kitchen chefs. We then continued our journey away from home base with a lovely boat ride from our amazing Parisminan locals. After, we loaded up onto the buses and continued our journey for the hotel. The constant rain caused a landslide on our usual road so a detour was needed. After hours of long driving, we stopped at a beautiful restaurant. Roasted chicken, salad, rice, and beans were served to students and staff and it was an amazing meal. We cleaned up and headed back on the bus (while grooving to some bomb music provided by alysse). At the hotel, we got tech time and participated in the OMG activity skit. Lastly, we finished up with dinner and an appreciation circle, to sum up, our trip to Costa Rica. This also sums up our last blog. Thanks for tuning in!

Overall, it was a good day!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 5

Written by Sadie and Heather

After a 7 am wake up call we hit the beach. We started off the day with service! Together we picked up 15 bags of plastic and trash. After service we had a yummy lunch together with tortilla chips, chicken, and rice. Then, we split into two groups. One group went swimming at a spot the locals suggested, and the other headed off into town for some shopping and gelato and then we switched so both groups could do both activities! We met up with some locals to play volleyball and then went back to the homebase for a well deserved shower and a dinner of fish, mashed potatoes, and vegetables. We got some tech time tonight before dinner although the WiFi wasn’t too strong today. We played some games and talked with friends and waited until the sun set. Then our beach patrol began. We watched for turtles and turtle nests until bedtime. A perfect third day at camp and we’ll see you for the fourth!!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 6

Hello families!

Today we started the day with fresh fruit and yogurt for breakfast, and then we moved to service and managed to move an unimaginably heavy log (seriously, it was so impressive) and a bunch of debris so that the sea turtles would have space to lay their eggs on the beach. We then played volleyball with the local team and strolled into town for quite possibly the best ice cream EVER. After that, we got to the best part of the day, bioluminescence boating!! The conditions were perfect, and we were able to see so much glowing algae! And now we have arrived in the present, when we have returned to home base and everyone is going to sleep weirdly early due to our exhausting day.

Signing off,
Jordan and Hendrix

BLOG POST FOR JULY 7

Hola from Miranda and Georgia!!!

Today for breakfast we had delicious banana pancakes with fresh pineapple and papaya and a side of cantaloupe juice. Some people helped out in the kitchen and helped serve food. After that we took a walk to our service site and picked up large pieces of plastic and micro plastics to lessen the chance of any animals consuming them. We worked under the sun from 9-11:30 with a beautiful view of the ocean and some fun music. Later, we made our way to home base and ate fish soup with rice for lunch. It was so good!

Around 1 we made our way to the top of a nearby waterfall and jumped down small cliffs into the water below. We climbed over rocks and under branches to go through the waterfalls and it was a fun but difficult endeavor. Then we returned back home and went in groups to town to buy some tasty snacks while other people rested. As our day came to an end, we had our tech time and played some games until dinner. Our dinner was was shrimp fried rice with a side of salad and plantain chips served with a refreshing passion fruit juice. After dinner, we had our mentor groups and did a fun group activity to promote team work and communication.

Today was so fun and we are so grateful for all the things we got to do.

Looking forward to visiting Cabo Blanco tomorrow!

PURA VIDAAAA

BLOG POST FOR JULY 8

For lunch we had rice and beans with carne guisada and a fresh salad.

After lunch we packed for our long journey tomorrow to our next location, super exited! We went to town and stocked up on snacks! BLOG POST FOR JULY 9

Written by Taz

Hola!!

Today we ate egg, beans and rice, with a tortilla for breakfast. Then we had to grab our baggies and get on the autobús to head to our second homebase. We drove for around an hour and then got off the bus and onto the ferry. After the ferry ride we got back on the bus and went to have lunch at this giant restaurant/souvenir shop that was right down the road from a famous bridge that goes over a bridge with crocodiles. A couple of us tried a new fruit called Rambutan! We finally made it to the second hotel which is called La Isla in Parrita. For dinner we had beef milanesa, rice and veggies with some fresh juice. We met up afterwards to go over our schedule for tomorrow and introduce ourselves to our other mentor Levi that just joined us today. We all played a fun game after that and then headed to bed. We have service again tomorrow so we need to rest up!

Pura vida!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 10

It’s Sylvia and Boy Max

We woke up bright and early so we could be at breakfast at 7 am. We saw rice, beans, and eggs like every other day but we heard breakfast might be different tomorrow, fingers crossed! Then we got straight to volunteering. We learned about erosion and planted so many baby trees. After volunteering we cooled off in the pool. At about 12 we were given an amazing meal of spaghetti and buttered bread. It was so good! A volunteer came to talk about the importance of mangroves and how planting trees is helping the community. Then we had a bit of free time to go to the pool again or chill in our rooms. After a bit we went to play kickball! Some people left during the game because some monkeys payed us a visit. There were so many of them and they were getting so close! Then we had a dinner of meat and rice with delicious rice pudding for dessert. Lastly, we ended our day we a group debate about turtles.

A pretty slay day!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 11

Written by Emma Porricelli and Camille Friall

Hello parents!! Previously on Turtle Camp; 23 campers arrived in our new hotel: La Isla [read with dramatic effect].

Today started off like any other, with successful service. We went into today with the goal of collecting 200 almond tree seedlings… and surpassed our goal! After uprooting, digging, and transporting, the day of service was not yet done. Afterwards we scoured the beach and forest for coconuts to plant in order to avoid erosion.

[commercial break] (lunch)

After nourishment, the campers had some free time, filled with swimming and hammocks, before their intense challenge. Two teams, head to head, fighting for 10 extra minutes of tech time. Neck and neck until the very end, an unbroken tie resulted in both teams being victorious.

[commercial break]

The campers, now dancers, swayed and shimmied to salsa, merengue, bachata, and cumbia: traditional Latin America Dances. Hellen (the dog) appreciated the dancing and got into the middle of our dancing circle!

[commercial break]

Sadly, Matcha (the other dog (aka. Itchy)) got her tail bit and wrapped. Due to this tragedy, she was in danger of being infected and even losing her tail. Thanks to the GLA campers and staff, Matchas tail is now safe and sound.

[commercial break]

And parents if you’re still watching, write “I love turtles” in the comments. Stay tuned for the next episode of Turtle Camp!

Signing off, Emma Porricelli and Camille Friall.

Hey parents hope you are reading, let us know what you think! Today for breakfast we ate French toast and fresh fruit which was super delicious! And after we left at 7:30 am for a super fun morning zip lining and going to a butterfly garden! After we got back to home base, we had some free time to relax and play volleyball. Some kids swam or took naps in hammocks after a tiring few days. We had a filling dinner of chicken and vegetable noodles, yum! After dinner we did an activity together to learn about different leadership styles and which one we think we are most like. Can’t wait for tomorrow! See ya 🙂

BLOG POST FOR JULY 13

After a scrumptious pancake filled breakfast, the campers headed to their second national park, Manuel Antonio. The campers spotted a variety of local wildlife, including sloths, rainbow crickets, monkeys, crabs, and more! They also had a chance to swim in rolling waves at the beautiful Manuel Antonio beach. After a short shopping session at some cute local stores, they came back to the hotel and had a delicious mac n cheese lunch.

Following some free time, the campers had an interactive cooking lesson, making tortillas from scratch, some yummy taquitos, and even some freshly brewed coffee.

The campers finished up the night with some grilled fish for dinner and a bonding activity. The campers wrote positive and affirmative words about one another.

Say your kids name in the chat if you love them! 😉

BLOG POST FOR JULY 14

Written by Abby, Emma B, and Max M

The day started out early with oceanside yoga followed by a breakfast of eggs, toast, and peach parfaits. Then we had service from 8-11:30 where we picked grass and replanted it to protect the shoreline from erosion. Afterwards we had chicken and fried rice for lunch. From 12-2 we had some pool/relaxation time. Then, from 2-5 we competed in beach Olympics, where two teams went head to head through fun activities such as coconut bowling and bucket racing. It ended with a sand castle built by the whole group. After tech time and chow circle we had a dinner of burrito bowls with chips and ice cream. The bonfire closed out our last night in Parrita before we all turned our lights off at 9:30.

Pura vida & see you soon!

Alas, turtle camp comes comes to a close. The day began like any other, with service. After ridding the beach of trash and collecting plants along the shore, the campers prepared for their final day of travel.

Coming full circle, we returned to Robledal where it all began. In a bittersweet goodbye, the campers reminisced on fond memories made together as they celebrated Max’s birthday.

This experience was truly one for the books, as all their campers carry this experience in the minds and their hearts as the charge into the future.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 17

All June 17th arrivals here safe and sound, yay! We had a busy day picking up students, getting them settled in, meals and fresh tamarind or maracuya juice throughout the day as different groups came in. Some of the early arrivals had some pool time and we all got to eat lunch together – the students enjoying learning where others were from, and excitedly waiting to see who their roomies on later arrivals would be. The last flight got back around 9 PM. We had dinner waiting for them, and got the tired travelers into their rooms.

We are going to hit the ground running tomorrow early – up to load the bus and head for the beautiful ferry ride to the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific and the first Homebase in Montezuma. When the last group settled in, some of the early arrivals had wisely decided to get some sleep, so we will get a nice group photo of all June 17th arrivals bright and early tomorrow. We did catch a few quick snaps of the students getting to know each other right before lights out. More to come!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 18

Written by Lucy Wood and Sasha Lilien

Hey yall,

Today was awesome! We started bright and early at 6:30 and ate breakfast. Then we loaded up the bus and got on the road. We drove to the ferry terminal in the cute little town Puntarenas where the ferry departs. The ride was incredible and there were lots of strangely obese cows. There were a lot of green mountains and rivers everywhere. We got there early and had time to take a walk through town, see a few beachside trinkets stands, and relax with some icy fruit drinks to stay hydrated, and then we got on the ferry.

After an hour long ride in the ferry, in the rain, but with some beautiful views, we docked in Montezuma. It was very hot and humid and we were all in the rain but it was fun. The ferry was a long ride but when we made it, it was so worth it. Everyone got a bit wet but we were all laughing.

After arriving at our next stop, a beautiful beachside hotel, we ate a wonderful late lunch and got to know one of the servers, Kathy. She brought us all on a walk to a nearby waterfall and we all were in awe of the beauty. After, we had some downtime and rested up for dinner. After dinner, we all got to bonding and playing games. Everyone got to know each other and played mafia. We had an orientation and discussed the expectations for our trip. Then we headed off to bed! Goodnight lovely parents.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 19

Written by Nina Bonte and Rose Peurach

Good evening parents,

We woke up at our first home base to the sound of the rushing waterfall. For breakfast, Kathy set up coconuts with fancy straws, so that we could enjoy fresh coconut water. Gravy, our lovely bus driver (yes – that’s his name!), drove us to our first service site. We moved logs, branches, and fallen trees out of the way so the turtles could have a clear path and a safe spot to lay their eggs. Though it was very hot and humid everyone helped out and always had a great smile on their face. After several sweaty hours of service, we made our way to the beach and took our first swim.

The wonderful kitchen staff made us some delicious spaghetti. We made our way to the local surf town and got to visit the boutiques. We made our way to the beach right near our home base. We took our swim test, lucky everyone passed! Kevin and Jose (two locals) wanted to play some volleyball. It was pouring rain, but that just made the experience more fun. For dinner we enjoyed some local caught marlin. We then settled down with some cake to celebrate Sasha’s birthday. To finish off the night we met with our mentor groups and played some fun games. Now we head off to bed. Happy father’s to anyone’s father that is reading, hope you had a great day!

Oh, and our two late arrivals are finally here, yay! Haley and Brooke. They arrived after the same bus and ferry trip we did the other day and are having a late dinner. We can’t wait for them to join us tomorrow at service.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 20

Written by Maraya Grimsby and Emerson Root

Good evening parents!

We woke up bright and early to the sound of beautiful rushing falls. Today Cathy and her fellow workers put together a delicious breakfast of avocado toast and eggs. After breakfast we completed our second day of beach service. Using our leadership skills, we work together as a team to clean sticks and logs, in order for the turtles to more easily lay and hatch their eggs. After a sweaty 3 service hours we drove back to home base and ate a tasty lunch. We ate a common meal from Costa Rica consisting of rice and chicken. This meal is common with celebrations such as birthdays.

After lunch we walked a 20 minute hike along the beach in a direction we haven’t been, to a place called Piedra Colorada, where a stream falls down onto the beach, with stripes of dark red rock in the riverbed and giant round green moss covered boulders all over. At the falls we admired the sites and carefully climbed up *giant* rocks through the stream. At the pools we relaxed and watched the capucin monkeys that live there day to day, swinging on trees and eating tree fruits (we could hear howler monkeys too, they are super loud). In the pools there is mud to cover your skin and to use a natural exfoliate. Locals claimed it makes you look ten years younger- now your children are 5. Quickly we walked back to homebase and got ready for the bioluminescence night kayaking in the bay. As soon as it got dark we started kayaking. It took a while for the bioluminescence to show, but as soon as it did it was magical. Whenever you touched the water it glowed. It was a once in a lifetime experience.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 21

Written by Carly Halpern and Claire Tickle

Heyyyy everyone!

What a busy day! A handful of students began the day with an early yoga session, which brought peace to those who participated. Following this, we got ready for our last day of service at this site. We headed down to the beach and continued what we started the past two mornings, which included clearing logs from the beach so that the turtles can safely make their way to shore.

After we wrapped up our service work, the group split up and some went to the beach, some to the little town for local snacks, while the rest of the group returned to home base to rest before the next activity.

We continued on our journey at the waterfall above homebase that we began on day 2. The group began at the top, working its way to the bottom and stopping to swim in pools located throughout the falls. We then continued down to another pool with cliffs surrounding us. The falling water on the last pool was so strong the air and spray blew like wind, and the current pushed us to the edge of the pool. We then finished off the adventurous hike all the way down to where the river meets the sea right at home base.

We split into mentor groups and had discussions, had chow circle, ate dinner, and shared many laughs. We were sad that our night turtle patrol had to be postponed due to a strong storm that made its way to home base. We had some other activities and we still had a wonderful night and everyone went to bed with smiles on their faces, ready to conquer tomorrow!!!!!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 22

Written by Trinity Borer and Maya Choksi

Hey Y’all!

We had such an exciting day for our last day in Montezuma! Some of the students started off the morning with another early morning yoga session to take some deep breaths, calm the mind, and prepare for our adventures today. Afterwards, we all loaded up and headed off to Cabo Blanco National Park for a hike through the rain forest with some fantastic tour guides. Some of our personal favorite sights along the hike included a White Tailed Deer, two beautiful Macaws, and the footprint of an ocelot. We also got to learn some pretty cool facts about the nature in Costa Rica!

Once we reached the end of our hike, we headed back to our home base in Montezuma for a delicious lunch and a little bit of rest (and packing) time. After resting for a bit, we had the chance to travel into town one last time before we leave Montezuma.

Although it was our last day here at La Cascada, the wonderful kitchen crew continued to impress us with an amazing farewell dinner from the grill. Not only was the food delicious as usual, but we were even treated to a short but fun dance lesson before we ate.

Lastly for today, we headed back to the beach one last time for our first shift of night patrol. Although we didn’t get to see any turtles this time, everyone enjoyed the time together on the beach and under the stars. We can’t wait to see what new adventures our new location will bring tomorrow!

What’s up,

Today was a travel day – from Montezuma to Parrita. A few people woke up very early to catch the last sunrise over the ocean in front of basecamp. Some then watched the big blue birds that come to our hammock patio every morning looking for snacks. We woke up and ate our last breakfast in Montezuma, said our goodbyes to the locals (shout out Cathy), we all loaded the buses, and took off. We made our way to the ferry in Paquera where we had some time to try some local snacks, then got on the ferry to cross to Puntarenas. It was a bright sunny day and nice on the top deck.

We hopped back on the buses and drove to lunch near Tárcoles. Afterwards we made an extra stop to see the famous crocodiles below the Tárcoles bridge.

After another hour we made it to our new home base and started to settle in and explore the new area and all the hammocks between the palm trees. A quick swim before a big rain came, several games of pool and foosball preceded our first meal here of chifrijo, a Costa Rican specialty, and a passion fruit dessert, followed by our mentor group session. Wordddd.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 24

Written by Ava Zech, Rose Peurach, Lucy Wood

Hey beautiful parents,

Today was fun and action packed. We woke up at seven per usual and went to breakfast. Then we headed out to a sunny day of service on the beach. We met with a local expert, Mau, who informed us about the erosion problem in Costa Rica, and the importance that the roots of plants play in keeping the sand held together. We stayed at the service site all morning, digging up plants and replanting them along the beach. After a laborious morning, we returned to basecamp.

We ate a delicious lunch of fish and chips, then went to the pool and basked in the sun with virgin pina coladas, which were delish. Some people also went to the beach to play frisbee and football. Afterwards, we were forced 🙂 into a game of kickball, which we all ended up enjoying. We tied. Afterwards we jumped in the pool to cool off and played an assortment of games.

Then we had an incredible guest speaker who came in to give us a presentation on turtles, which was incredibly intriguing and I’m quite sure we all learned heaps. Then we went to dinner, which was some interesting noodle concoction, and we all munched up. We went our separate ways doing separate things, but we will meet for mentor groups half an hour from when we are writing this blog. I’m sure Luis and Ingrid have some special activity in store for us tonight. Peace out parents, you reside in our thoughts.

Update: We had an interesting task after dinner in little groups under the back thatched hut. We discussed the problems of turtle and beach conservation, with each group representing a different perspective, like business owners, tourists, conservationists, or locals. It was interesting to learn how complicated real world conservation is!

Oh, and you can see in the photo below, they worked all day and fixed our island’s cell tower – yay!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 25

Written by Catcher Sawyer and Jack Johnston

Today we started out with some beautiful rice and bean tacos to fuel for the service in the morning. We started by planting mangroves and almonds. The roots of these plants help to hold the island together! We ended our service by planting more roots from our first service day at this site to strengthen the first line of defense for the shore line.

Upon our return to home base, we happened to sight a barrel of monkeys partying in the trees. Upon closer inspection of said monkeys, we happened to notice that they were also intrigued in us. We learned a lot from the monkeys and they learned a lot from us. We learned that they use vines as fire poles, and we taught them that hats are not edible.

After our adventure we had time to recover and regain our energy with yummy lunch for the very draining dance lessons. We learned 4 types of dances (Salsa, merengue, bachata, and swing criollo) from our wonderful teacher Kenneth. We diversified our dancing artillery while bonding with each other in the process.

To round off the day, we did an activity to see how much we knew about each other by writing favorite/interesting facts and trying to guess who the fact originated with. Then disbanding to get a good nights rest for the busy day ahead.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 27

Written by Audrey Hull and Cami Diaz

Hola families, friends, etc

Today we started off the day with a delicious breakfast. We then got ready to go ziplining. When we got to the ziplining place we got suited up in our harnesses and helmets. Then started on the trail of 11 ziplines which were all super fun especially the last one where we got in a full body harness and went across a zipline in superman position. We finished off our ziplining adventure by having a delicious meal at the place. Also – after we finished eating we went into a butterfly house they had and looked at rescued/problem crocs in an enclosure. Next on the way home our bus driver Gravy spotted a sloth high up in a tree and stopped so we could all get out and get a closer look.

Once we got back to home base we recharged and got ready to have a chat at chow circle and then eat dinner. After dinner we had pool time where we all hung out and played fun pool games like chicken fights. After pool time we had mentor groups and since it was the first night not raining we got out and explored the beach and played capture the flag on it. We also joined another group at the hotel and had a dance party with them. Now we are all getting ready for bed after our long day so we can get up bright and early tomorrow to go to Manuel Antonio National park.

Signing off with love,

Audrey Hull and Cami Diaz (aka the best)

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 28

Written by Sophia and Amelia

Howdy folks!

Today the we woke up bright and early so we could be on time to Manuel Antonio– the smallest national park in Costa Rica! Within the first 10 minutes of arrival we spotted our first sloth in the top of a tree. Our tour guides took us on a short trail through the park and made sure to show us tons and tons of wildlife. We saw frogs, dragonflies, colorful crickets, hummingbirds, deer, two fake owls, and the rare red-backed squirrel monkeys. After the tour we spent about an hour on a beach located inside of the park, but when the tides started to rise we decided it was time to take off for lunch.

We arrived back at home base, ate some rice, chicken, and beans; had some phone time, and were off to our cooking class. Our lively teacher, Lulu, taught us all how to make our own corn tortillas cakes (“chorreadas”) over wood fire sweet, thick, with sour cream on top if you want, eaten piping hot off a banana leaf, and they were delicious! We grated the corn and everything homemade. Some dancing s we all cooked too.

After cooking classes we had some chickpeas, beef, vegetables, and rice for dinner. At dinner we were informed that the our wonderful director, Clint, had set up a game of word assassin for the whole group to play in our last three days.

Afterwards the group had some free time which was spent playing some pool, Foosball, and just some good ‘ol talking. Then we headed to the dark beach for a cozy mentor group meeting around a beach fire. Here we all wrote down a person, object, activity, and place that had meaning to us and talked about it and threw them into the fire (not to be forgotten, don’t worry)!

We miss y’all so much and are looking forward to seeing your beautiful faces once more!

All our love,

Sophie Woodard and Amelia Lignugaris

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 29

Written by Haley and Sarah

Hey y’all,

As usual in Costa Rica, we woke up to the sun beaming, the birds chirping, and the sight of glorious dew drops on the grass. The ideal morning. We started off with breakfast then promptly got ready for our service activity of the day. We gathered our trusty shovels and trowels, then headed over to where we would collect tropical almond saplings (almendras). Once our buckets were full of the almond saplings, we slightly got sidetracked and learned how to gather mangoes and coconuts in the wild by using the environment around us. We learned how to create rope out of natural fibers and how to retrieve the mangoes safely. Dare I say it, they were absolutely delicious. Once we filled our stomachs, we drove to the nursery and planted the almond samplings into bags and got them ready to be transferred to their new homes for tomorrow!

We had a nice lunch and then moved onto our afternoon activities. After relaxing by the pool we split into groups for some friendly competition in the form of Beach Olympics. We competed in many different events that were focused around teamwork and fun. There were many unique beach games such as coconut bowling, which was a little more challenging than regular bowling. Eventually after a few practice runs we all figured it out. After all, practice makes perfect!!

Then we finished off the day with dinner, did some packing for tomorrow’s trip to San Jose, some pool games (not in the actual pool) and had one of our few chow circles left. We all shared some of our favorite moments together, and remembered all of the good moments. In the end we were tired, but were happy with what we had accomplished. Just another perfect day in Costa Rica.

Sincerely and with much love,

Haley Helms and Sarah Steele

BLOG POST FOR JULY 20

Written by Scarlett and Olivia

Today we woke up bright and early with the sound of the howler monkeys. Breakfast was served with lychee, which was really good! It was followed up by a med meeting for the medic group. Later we got ready and went to our first community service which I was cleaning the beach of trash, especially plastic. This was for sea turtles to lay and hatch their eggs properly. We came back to the hostel, after an amazing walk back with awesome views of the nearby town and green scenery.

After lunch we played card games as a big group and then rested until our next activities. From card games we went to swimable tide pools steps from the hostel. While we were swimming it started down pouring and got everyone’s stuff soaking wet! We came back and freshened up for mentor groups; where we better understood community service in foreign countries. Later we had a delicious dinner and pet the well known dogs by the kitchen. Our last activity of the day was an educational presentation about Costa Rica. During this, we learned common phrases such as Pura Vida and Tuanis, this translates to thank you and that’s good!

Our one and only Frechman courageously led our GLA team onto the beach once again. Thanks to our team of hardworking and dedicated young minds, we were able to further comb and clear the beach of debris and plastics allowing for turtles to lay eggs and start new generations. Following this, despite the light rain and colder conditions, we were able to enjoy and learn of the bioluminescent algae in Costa Rica. Another day, another victory for our planet and our team.

Hey parents! Hope you guys are doing great!

We have been doing awesome and such a busy day today. We started off our morning bright and early to the sound of monkeys and the really cool waterfall right next to our home base. For breakfast we had fresh passion fruit juice and big omelets full of veggies. After breakfast we had an unexpected visit to a nearby hiking trail with a local tour guide who taught us about the nature and animals in Costa Rica! Our hike started off with mega leg work up a few mountains but soon later we were refreshed with the two beautiful waterfalls that we were able to swim in. To get to the waterfall took some parkour skills and many of us went out of our comfort zones when we walked through a fast flowing river on rocks. However our tour guide led us to greatness and helped us along the way.

On the way back to home base we crossed over very high bridges with views of the waterfall. Once we arrived back at home base we were served a Costa Rican dish which was fish soup and amazing fish pancakes. After our meal we walked over to our service site to learn about the different sea turtles in Costa Rica. One of the volunteers gave a great presentation and taught us all there is to know about the work we are doing and how we are helping. It was amazing to learn more and see where our work is being contributed to. On our way home we had time to shop in the Montezuma town where we had the chance to get ice cream, purchase handmade jewelry, and purchase souvenirs. When we arrived home we had the chance to relax on the hammocks and play games together. Then we had a delicious dinner of burgers and plantain chips, our favourite! We then were surprised with a local band who came to play music for us where we could dance and have fun together! Such a fun day, see you next time!

We woke up to a delicious breakfast at the restaurant at La Cascada hotel. Everyone on the staff is super helpful and kind and make outstanding meals for the GLA group everyday. After breakfast, we headed over to the Curu National Park with our amazing tour guides. We saw many of Costa Rica’s native animals, such as, Crocodiles and Howler Monkeys. Before we left for lunch, we enjoyed the beauty of Curu’s beach. Then, we drove back to the hotel to have lunch, consisting of rice, beans, pork, and vegetables! After eating lunch we took a stroll down to Montezuma’s beach, where we swam in the water and played volleyball with the locals. Later in the day, we walked back to the hotel to shower and devour some tasty barbeque. After dinner, the GLA group enjoyed dancing with the kitchen staff.

Hi family and friends! Today was our first full day in Parrita, and we started our day bright and early with a wonderful buffet style breakfast of eggs, beans and rice, homemade tortillas, and sweet plantains. After, we headed to a beach side tree nursery and assisted in planting almond and mangrove trees. Later, we had a delicious lunch of Mac and cheese, salad, and toast! After some free time at our beautiful beach side hotel, we headed into town where we picked up the cutest local woman, Lulu. Lulu brought us to a local family’s plant nursery! There, we were served fresh fruit, grown in the nursery, and were given a tour of the land just before we were given the chance to test out our green thumbs and plant some lettuce and radishes for the nursery! After saying goodbye to our friends at the nursery, we headed to el supermercado for some Costa Rican snacks. As soon as we got back to our hotel we jumped right into some relaxation with ocean side yoga. Once our yoga session concluded we had an amazing dinner and finished the night with a group game of hide and seek.

We got up super early to head up to zip lining, which was a blast! Overall, we were a courageous group; we tried zip lining upside down, while spinning, and almost everyone participated in the special superman opportunity at the end. As we finished up our lunch, we checked out the crocodiles, snakes, and butterflies next to the kitchen. After heading home, we had some free time before we gathered to start the research portion of a debate about a proposed law that aimed to help Costa Rican turtles. Because of the rain that rolled in during the afternoon, it was unsure if we would make it to our nocturnal amphibian, reptile, and spider tour but we finally got the call that we were set! After a bumpy ride, we got to see several kinds of frogs including the red eyed tree frog, a small snake, young caiman, a Brazilian wandering spider, and a kinkajou with the help of our amazing tour guides. After that, we headed home to head to bed, sorely in need of some rest.

After an early wakeup at 05:45, we trudged sleepily to our morning yoga session led by Mia However, we briskly forgot our fatigue as we saw the beautiful sunrise. The lesson was peaceful and calming, thanks to our wonderful yoga instructor. Breakfast occured as usual, followed by a session of feeding ravenous monkeys (mostly fruit!) wich were perched on the roof of our huts. Service lasted three hours and consisted of planting almond trees on the beach, in order to decrease erosion (therefore giving sea turtles a beach to lay their eggs). We patiently queued for our tech time after lunch., ready to relax by the pool. At 15:00 we met in a gazebo for a cooking class in wich we cooked chorreadas : a traditional Costa Rican pancake eaten with tea. We peeled corn, cut it, milled it, added some sugar and fried it in a pan. The energy from the treat was much needed for a competitive game of capture the flag (inspired by Percy Jackson). Both games were a lot of fun but unfortunately the session was cut short by dusk. We enjoyed dinner, further anticipating the karaoke session later that day in celebration of Tila’s birthday! Although the singing at karaoke was not of opera-quality (in fact it was a cacophony). It was still a lot of fun and we got to eat some chocolate cake. We were glad to tumble into our beds after, though, after such a busy day.

Yesterday, we visited Manuel Antonio Park where we saw a truly impressive number of animals, including iguanas, both types of sloths found in Costa Rica (including a baby!), some spiders and hummingbirds! After, we had time to hang out at Manuel Antonio’s beautiful blue beach. Later in the day we headed to a local school, la escuela el tigre, to donate paint for some colorful walls. After dinner, we had a bonfire with many snacks and smores; brought to us by the snack committee. To conclude the night, we held a farewell ceremony for the 2 weekers who left the next day. We lit candles as we shared our favorite memories from the trip, what we were grateful for, and any last words of appreciation for what we have learned the past two weeks. Next, the 3 weekers head to our final destination: Uvita!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 1

Hey all! This morning we woke up bright and early to go surfing at Marino Ballena National Park. We learned how to surf during our two-hour lessons, then relaxed on the beach for a while. Some of us went swimming while others tanned on the shore. We made it back to home base in time for lunch before returning to the National Park for some service. We dug up and relocated trees to the beach to help reduce erosion. By dinner-time we were all exhausted from a long, fun day in the sun, but we managed to stay up long enough for movie night. In honor of the tropical vibe of Costa Rica, we watched Moana. Then we finally trudged off to bed, sunburnt but satisfied! Pura Vida!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 3

Hey parents! It’s Libby and Ash here back again for the update.

Today started off with a strong storm and bad news that we may not be able to go snorkeling. However, an hour later we were surprised with the amazing news that the storm had cleared and we could still go. We headed down to the national park to get on the boat which took us to the island. The journey was an hour and a half long full of singing and included zooming over big waves. On the way we also got the chance to see Olive Ridley turtles as well as large whales. Once we had arrived we got into our snorkel gear and jumped in the water. While snorkeling we were able to not only see various fish and coral reefs but also stingrays, sharks and turtles. We arrived back at the beach and had a picnic under the sun with fresh fruits and veggies as well as an amazing rice dish. We then hopped back on the bus and headed home to have some pool time. Later on we had dinner which consisted of beans, rice, salad and fried fish. To conclude our amazing day, we played hide and seek around home base and charades all together. Today was a memorable day for all where many were able to go outside their comfort zones to try new things. At the end of the day everyone had a blast! See you next time!!

Hello families!

Today was our first day on he service site here in beautiful Montezuma. We began our project of clearing out any wood or trash on the beach in a turtle nesting area. This makes it so that turtles have a clear and protected area to lay their eggs. After finishing two and a half hours of beach clearing we went back to our hotel to have a delicious meal of chicken, beast, and rice. After eating we spent the rest of the day relaxing on the beach and swimming in the ocean. We had such a fun day today and we are all greatful for our amazing counselors and mentors!

We settled in a bit and then got together at our meal place to celebrate one of our camp counselors birthdays, Katherine! We had a fun first night with cake, karaoke and a talent show for Katherine to start of our new stay at this hotel.

My favorite part of the day was the dance lesson. We learned four different dances that were super fun. The dance lesson pulled me outside of my comfort zone in a good way, and because I kept an opened mind, I ended up having a ton of fun! It was a great way to get rid of extra energy from sitting inside all morning because of the tropical storm. The only thing that could have made it better would be a clear sky!

In the morning we ate French Toast and finished painting the signs we made for the community beach area. The signs were to promote protection and care of the coastline and mangroves within the community. After lunch, we were off to the beach where we enjoyed a sunny day and cooled off in the salty water of Parrita. This was really exciting after waiting for the weekend storms to pass. After dinner, we grouped into teams for a trivia game, with categories like music, Costa Rican culture, geography and Disney! We went to bed excited for zip lining!

The zip lining included a few different types of adventures: the Superman, repelling and even some upside down zip lining. After that we had some scrumptious lunch and then went and got some close ups of some crocs, butterflies and even some snakes. We had a sleepy

bus ride back but then got some quality pool time to bring our energy back up and prepare us for the cooking class with lulu! We learned how to cook up some delicious chorreadas, a traditional Costa Rican dish featuring corn… that’s it, simple but good. We finished it off with some agua dulce and some black coffee. Here we are now writing this after a great dinner and we are going to finish the night with some chill time.

The morning began with a bang, or rather a scream. In the early eves of the morning george and Jackson found a bat in their room. They later fell asleep again after they placed bedsheets over their heads and we’re consoled by Liam. Then we were waken up early and we began our walk to the waterfall, whilst we picked up trash along the way. We had a great amount of fun there swimming and splashing. We were able to jump from and slide around the rocks. There were a few close calls. Then we took the bus back to the hotel where we were met by lunch. Then, after a rest, we headed out to ballena national marine park where we were taught how to surf in two groups. The first group went out to the water and surfed after a lesson. The second group in the meantime walked, swam, or enjoyed the spectacular views. Then they switched and played around until a soft pink sunset. We then returned to the hotel ate and then slept.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 9

Written by Anna and Inés

Waking up today was rather uneventful compared to yesterday- we woke everyone up for breakfast before taking the bus to town on a surprise trip for the feria. We saw the awards for the dog race where we were able to meet both the people and dogs in Uvita, along with some shopping. After purchasing lots of souveniers for our families back at home, we embarked on a heated scavenger hunt where hearts were broken but luckily few tears were shed. We returned for lunch before heading back to town to watch a special indigenous dance and purchase additional items for home. We went back to then prepare for the other surprise of the day- a nightime amphibian walking tour. There, we saw many amazing creatures but also discovered some of our fears along with new ones related to a deathly spider… We then headed back to sleep soundly after an adventurous day, well, most of us excluding those kept awake by dreams of nocturnal critters.

Here are lots of photos from last week!
