TIME CAPSULE LETTER

Written by Alexa & the Costa Rica Team

Hello GLA Students and Families,

As we look back on our recent session, we are filled with a mixture of excitement and fondness. The journey we’ve embarked on together over the past few weeks has been truly enlightening. It was wonderful to watch each of you evolve, embrace new challenges, and discover more about yourselves and the world around you. You arrived as individuals, but you left as a team… as a family.

So many moments made an impression. The first night stands out, where you were all strangers but quickly bonded over your first game of mafia (one of many). From that moment, it was evident how well you would collaborate throughout our adventure. The cooperation and critical thinking you demonstrated during our team-building activities and service projects were unforgettable. You accomplished so much, from decorating tables with handprints and reusing plastic bottles for plant propagation to planting a garden and painting a vibrant mural. We, along with the local students and teachers, were deeply impressed by your hard work and dedication. Each experience, whether big or small, contributed to our collective goal of making a positive impact.

On a personal note, we were deeply moved by each of you. Your enthusiasm, open-mindedness, and readiness to step out of your comfort zones and engage with people from diverse backgrounds were truly admirable. As you move on from this experience, we encourage you to hold onto the lessons you’ve learned here. Maintain the connections you’ve made, continue to pursue your projects, and never stop chasing your dreams. Remember, keep the BAD vibes out and to always remain in the present.

Embrace everything–- the good, the bad, the happy, and the sad. What a privilege we have to feel!

Warm regards from your bomba family,
Alexa, Laura, Tamara, Christopher, and Fernando

BLOG POST FOR JULY 23

Hello families!

We are very happy to tell you that all the students have arrived well. Yesterday with the GLA Staff we made 5 trips to the airport to look for the 20 students who were arriving. With those who arrived early we were able to enjoy the pool table, our first dinner together and we even sang happy birthday to Ellie in 4 different languages who turned 15 yesterday! We ate a delicious cake and then our new group of leaders played Mafia. 9:30pm they went to rest after a long day. Follow our Blog to find out about our daily adventures!

Here are some photos from yesterday. Not pictured are Xavier and Bristol as they arrived late at night.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 24

Written by: Bea & Mercer

We started the day with another fresh breakfast. We took a quick bus trip to La Escuela Porrosatí and were fortunate to see their celebration for their national holiday: Anexión del Partido de Nicoya. We then split into groups and worked on different service projects such as: painting/decorating tables, decorating a wall, building planters, and playing sports and games with the children.

We came back to the hotel and had lunch and had our first session in our mentor groups. In our groups we worked on making goals and reflecting on what we wanted to learn over the trip. Then, we took another bus ride into downtown Heredia to Tico Lingo. We were all evaluated for our level of Spanish and also played Fusbol and Mafia. We had a little tour of the city of Heredia and did a scavenger hunt in the market. We were tasked with finding items around the market with only 2000 colones. The winner was the group with the most money left at the end and all the items in the list. Finally, we took the bus back to the hotel.

We had dinner, then we played a fun game of musical chairs and cards. After we had some tech time then went to bed.
Day 3 has been the best one yet!!!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 25

Hola mis amigos! Somos Garrett y Chloe,

today was another fantastic day to explore Costa Rica. First our group started the day out with fresh pancakes for breakfast. After, we headed to Escuela Porrosati, and worked to continue making a difference in the building. We gathered and completed several painting tasks, and began to pot the plants. Everything is looking beautiful so far. We even made sure the entire school was clean for the kids tomorrow—gracías, Fernando, for leading and doing the last of the cleaning. After returning to Home Base for lunch, we had the opportunity to meet a guest speaker, and to learn more about Costa Rica’s history and culture. We then finished the day with an immersive Spanish class at Tico Lingo in Heredia—which was pretty fun, and taught us a lot. To cool down for the day, we played pool with friends and continued to bond over a delicious dinner.

Day four was full of lots of learning and fun, and so will the rest of this adventure.

Best,

G & C <3

BLOG POST FOR JULY 26

Hello! It’s Max and Arabella. Leaders of the day!

On day five we started the day with a delicious meal of waffles, bacon, and eggs.

We then went to our social service at the Porrosattí school where some of us played with the young kids there while others focused on fixing up the school by planting and painting. We then had a break before lunch where some of us made bracelets and others played pool.

After that we had an amazing lunch of paella with clams, prawns, and chicken with French fries and salad.

After lunch we gathered in harmony hall to do our mentor groups. In our mentor groups we had an activity where we were able to openly talk to eachother about our feelings towards social media. We really connected with each other and reflected on our own phone use. Afterwards we went to Spanish class where we continued to learn and interact with eachother in Spanish. We got to further our Spanish practice by going to a local market. We had so much fun trying new foods like papusas, empanadas and more! Then we came back and had another delicious meal of fries and burgers. Then we finished the night with a Costa Rica trivia night. We had so much fun and it was very close game.

Continue following our blog for more adventures in Costa Rica!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 27

Hola todos it’s Kinan and Gab!

Today we had the opportunity of visiting the la Paz waterfall- a very culturally enriching and equally fun adventure!

It started off with a long road trip filled with anticipation, excitement and a whole lotta music. Finally getting there, we started off by admiring the array of wildlife that this beautiful country has to offer. From graceful dancing butterflies to menacing big cats, it was action-packed animal appreciation.

After all that, it was safe to say we needed some lunch to replenish our (by now empty) stomachs. The buffet that the restaurant had to offer did not disappoint- it was a bonanza of Tico food complimented by some thoughtful conversation between mouthfuls.

At this point, it was time for the main event- the La Paz waterfall. Indeed, the cascading cliffs of water that greeted us did not disappoint. Some admiration and photos later, we were ready to hop on the bus and head on home.

Gab and Kinan

BLOG POST FOR JULY 28

Hola somos Karina y Devin.

Today we woke up and we went to the Poas volcano. It smelled like eggs, but it was just the intense sulfur scent! Then for our safety, we had to wear funny white helmets that made us look like construction workers (we still looked cute!). Then after the glorious volcano, we went to the Dokacoffee farm and met our intelligent tour guide Hugo, who helped us learn about the production of coffee. From the root to the store! (Doka). We got to try too many variations of coffee there, and many different types of fruit covered in chocolate! We ravaged the gift shop, drove home, and had a very emotional and heart warming saying goodbye to Fernando, our Local Director. Then we had story telling time in front of the fire.

Adiós a todos!

Nos vemos mañana!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 29

Hola mundo!

Today is day 8 of our trip! Wow, time flies! After our huge excursion weekend, we went back to our usual weekday schedule. We are working to finish up our service projects at the local school. Today was actually a big day at the school! We were able to be a part of the audience for the arts ceremony of all the students today. There were dancers, singers, and instrumentalists. We definitely felt honored to be a part of the art ceremony. After service, we had a Ted Talk activity led by one of our mentors, Alexa. Then we went straight to Spanish classes. We could hardly sit still in class because we were so excited to go to EL CINE!!!! Together we all bought loads of popcorn and watched the new Minions movie in Spanish (no subtitles!!). After the movie, we were pretty exhausted from our big day today. And now we are winding down to sleep, and also looking forward to our new day of adventure.

Nos vemos!!!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 30

Hola! Que tal?

It’s Xavier and Tegan and we’re honored to be today’s leaders!

To start off the day (for some of us) early at 6:20 Am we all went running on a special trail with Alexa, one of our mentors. After this as always, we had a delicious breakfast that consisted of french toast, smashed eggs, oatmeal, and some chocolate brownies. I swear I never had such good food in a “summer camp”. Straight after breakfast, we served at Escuela Porrosati. I personally was assigned to our director, Laura’s gardening team. This was a whole beatification process, starting with excavating the existing rocks to make room for new soil and new plants. In my opinion, this was the hardest part but thankfully it got easier from there. Afterwards, we had to get soil from a field inhabited by an aggressive horse that we had to fight off with sticks! Haha Crazy, I know. Others painted (questionable) flowers on walls or potted flowers in plastic bottles to hang on the fence. After service, we had lunch which was steak with chimichurri sauce. So fancy. Then we left for Spanish class at Tico Lingo in Heredia. This class was special because we handmade some empanadas with beans and cheese! It was surprisingly good even though they were falling apart. We finished the day with grilled chicken and plantains for dinner and playing games.

Tomorrow we are looking forward to hiking volcan Barva which is a 12 kilometer trek through the jungle.

Adios amigos,
Xavier and Tegan

BLOG POST FOR JULY 31

¡Feliz jueves a todos!
Somos Cora y Ellie (las líderes del día!).

Today was a hiking excursion day! We woke up, packed our bellies with breakfast and hopped on the busses to drive to the hiking destination, Volcán Barva (Don’t worry, we didn’t forget to stretch)!

This hike was 12km (8miles). It was a long and strenuous hike, but a beautiful one, it was worth it (valió la pena)! We were caught in the rain for a little bit of the walk up, but it only made the atmosphere of the forest light up with vibrant green.

We returned to home base at 2pm, had a shower and then a huge lunch, a dish called Chifrijo, a traditional meal from Costa Rica, and spent the rest of the afternoon resting and regaining the rest of our energy to practice for the talent show tomorrow! Then we had a mentor group in which we wrote beautiful poems. For closing the day we had a tasty dinner with fish and vegetables and went to rest early because we are still super tired!

Miss you! Kiss you! Love you!
Xoxo,
Cora and Ellie

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 1

Hola! Somos Annelise y Kaya!

Today we started off the day with a delectable breakfast of waffles, eggs, and pico de gallo. The weather started off great as it was sunny and warm.

Then, we headed to service where we continued our projects. Some groups continued to garden in various places throughout the school, while others painted a sign for the school. As it was our last day with the kids, gifts were exchanged, such as bracelets and drawings.

For lunch we had chicken, rice, and fries. After lunch we had some time for relaxation. Many of us chose to take advantage of the sunny, hot, day by relaxing next to the pool.

Following that, we headed off to Spanish class at Tico Lingo. Many people enjoyed their complimentary cup of coffee and had tons of fun playing Jenga in class!

For dinner we had pasta and garlic bread. And the juice of the day was mango! Following dinner we held a talent show where all sorts of talent was shown. We had singing, dancing, and even magic! We had so much fun!!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 2

Hola! Today marked the last of our service work at Escuela Porrosáti where we stroke our final brushes of paint and planted the last of our flowers. It was so cool to see how far we’ve come in just seven mornings of work! We had to say ¡adios! to the school and went back to home base.

We completed our last leadership activity where we talked about our goals for the trip and if we accomplished them. We also created a pledge to continue “being the change” after our trip has concluded.

After this, we set off for our last day of Spanish classes at Tico Lingo. Each class gave a final project about our trips (en español, of course) and the school had a little graduation ceremony for us. We’ve grown so much as Spanish speakers and feel way more confident in our Spanish skills because of these classes. To conclude our time at Tico Lingo, we participated in a salsa class! This dance seemed really confusing at first, but after a bit everyone got it and had so much fun stepping along to the beat!

After Tico Lingo, we arrived back to Home Base, ate a scrumptious (as always) dinner and started packing for our return back home. It’s crazy how fast the trip has gone by, but as they say “time flies when you’re having fun!” We still have one more fun excursion day after this which is bound to be awesome!

Until mañana!

Your FINAL leaders of the day, signing off, Bristol & Campbell!
❤🇨🇷☀

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 4

Hello families, today is our last day of the program. It was really beautiful everything we shared together. Today Laura, the international program director writing to thank you for the trust you had in our company and to tell you that your children, our leaders, are beautiful people, who did a great job at the Porrosatí School. They worked with a lot of enthusiasm and love. The children of the school were very happy and grateful. Yesterday we had our last day, it was a great zip line adventure in the jungle. In the evening we all ate a special dinner together and made an appreciation circle. Many cried with emotion for the time shared and for having to say goodbye to their new friends. For us, the work team, it was very exciting to see them enjoying so much all this time, learning new things and generating deep bonds of friendship. It was truly a great pleasure to share this time together. A beautiful group of 20 young people who gave us many smiles and unforgettable moments. All of our young people have already left Costa Rica and are on their way back home, surely eager to tell you ALL about what they experienced during their summer in Costa Rica. Thanks again for everything and we wish each one of you a good journey.

With love,
Laura

Costa Rica: Sea Turtle Initiative (August 2 – August 11, 2024)

PROGRAM PHOTO ALBUM
TIME CAPSULE LETTER

Written by Fernanda & the Costa Rica Team

Hello group! It has been a while since we embarked on our journey together to Parismina. Some days , you might still dream about this beautiful green space and when you wake up hope to hear the sound of the waves and the howler monkeys.

Just a little reminisce of some of our best moment together: the volleyball matches, night walks, swimming in the ocean, seeing the sunrise , our service in the community, the amazing tours surrounded by nature and all the songs we sang together ✨

We were so lucky overall, the weather , the ocean and tons of turtles accompanied us in those 10 days behind us, but we will always carry the memories with us! We saw all together 10 turtles! Our first one Bertha, which was the first time for many to see a sea turtle laying her eggs will always remain in our hearts.

Do you remember we also created our One Meaningful Goal to take back home?! It goes like this: “Through our many adventures, make small sacrifices, such as limiting phones, to produce life memories and keep learning”. I hope we continue to apply this, and live our life to the fullest while making conscious choices.

We wish all of you swim the world strong!

– Fernanda, your mentor & all the Sea Turtle Initiative Team🐢

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 2

Our Sea turtle adventure in Costa Rica has begun as most of our students have arrived for the Sea Turtle Initiative! One more student will arrive tomorrow morning. To kick off our journey, we took a tour of Hotel Robledal learning about its owl/duck program and played volleyball. As the sun began to set, we gathered for our Sunset Circle. This was a special time where we got to learn everyone’s names and share what we’re most excited about during our time together. It was exciting to hear everyone’s fun fact as well . It’s evident that we have an amazing group of students ready to make the most of this experience.

PS. Once we get to Parismina we’ll be detaching from our phones more, embracing the jungle, and appreciating the beach. We’ll send a daily blog but won’t be calling or texting daily. Of course, our directors can be reached 24/7 if anything comes up.

Pura Vida!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 3

Hola from Costa Rica!

We started off the day bright and early at 6:00am where the last nights late arrivals took the swim test in the 4 foot pool. After a quick breakfast of getting to know everyone our group was almost complete! We played icebreakers before heading off to our first adventure: ZIPLINING. We saw beautiful views and even a lucky few named Alessandra, Asher and Lilith saw sloths and toucans. We braved 55 miles per hour zip lines at up to 2000 feet, with our confident leader Aiden and Sophia.

After ziplining we enjoyed lunch of rice and beans, and finally met up with our final camper, Katie. We drove to Maxi Pali, the local supermart and stocked up on snacks and games. Joe and Calvin went ham and got Monolpoly, Uno, 3 liters of 7-up and chips for the rest of the trip. We promptly made our way back to our Homebase via bus and boat. On the bus we played too many games of wavelength where we dubbed Sabine, Jazzy and Faith the winners. On the boat Kiana and Matthew saw a baby crocodile in the river.

Because of how beautiful the ocean water was we all took a much needed dip to cool off from the humid weather. The water was wonderful and the sunset was gorgeous. Vanessa, Maria and Sasha did not shy away from a quick underwater photo shoot, and the entire group played volleyball in the water where the MVPs were no doubt Logan with his height and Alex with his agility. At Homebase there is no WiFi, so if you don’t hear from the campers don’t worry.

Until next time!

Written by Sasha and Aiden

Ps. If you want to contact your student or our team, please don’t hesitate to reach out! We‘ll get back to you quickly if not right away, we have a full and fun schedule.

Amanda, Jason, Julio, and Fernanda

More blog photos will be added as soon as WiFi allows!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 4

Some of us woke up at 6:15 for beach meditation with Julio and Amanda, and we were lucky enough to spot some spider monkeys pointed out by Julio, and Capuchin monkeys, spotted by Logan! Joe and Asher were super stoked about the little guys. We walked on the beach, and we saw a lot of sand dollars and really pretty shells. Kianna found a huge sand dollar, Alex and Aiden found a coconut and were able to crack it!

After a breakfast of eggs, gallo pinto, and pineapple grown on the property we took a tour of Jasons property and the farm. We started with the botanical life around the house, we were able to see sensitive plants, pick lemons, and we spotted a caiman eating a fish, baby iguanas, a hawk, vultures, and a two toed sloth!!!! We were able to eat a lot of the local fruits, and Sasha was the first to eat termites, and encouraged the rest, meanwhile Jason was chopping up coconuts, which Katie and Matthew thoroughly enjoyed. We had chicken, rice and beans, and plantains for lunch which was followed by a game a volleyball watched by Fernanda, Venessa and Maria were the score keepers and refs. Calvin’s team won, and the losers (us) had to run ten laps on the rocks. On the short walk back Lilith found a huge grasshopper and was able to pick it up, which was ok because we learned it was an invasive species.

We later had a sea turtle conservation debate, Sasha, Sabine, Sofia, and Jazzy were absolutely on top of it and should be lawyers! After the debate we were lucky enough to have Marco tell us about the local sea turtles, and what caused the massive drop in their populations within the environment, and Faith was very interested and won a candy in the quiz after! Alexandra showed amazing compassion and empathy by helping out a fellow bunk mate who needed a friend. With full stomachs after a exquisite dinner, we are about to get to our first beach patrol feeling energized and connected!!

Written by Logan and Lilith

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 5

Last night (August 4) we went on our first night patrol! We walked along the beach admiring the stars and watching for turtle tracks. On our way back we were fortunate to witness a large green sea turtle nesting and laying eggs! Her shell was 103cm long and she laid 79 eggs that were relocated to a hatchery. After she finished covering the nest we watched as she made her way back to the ocean.

We woke up to another morning in the beautiful warm jungle and for breakfast we ate arepas, fresh fruit, eggs, cucumbers, flavourful guyabana jam. We all got ready for the beach and then split into two groups and went into opposite directions to collect garbage that had washed ashore. This ended in a friendly competition to see who got the most trash. After being in the sun we all jumped in the ocean and spent some time riding the waves! After taking some time to relax and rinse off we had a volleyball tournament where the non champions will give us a vocal performance of the lions sleep tonight after dinner! We had a leadership activity based on shark tank where students create leadership activities to develop skill sets they want to expand on. We’re about to go collect some organic herbs to create natural bug repellent before dinner followed by another night patrol.

Love Kiana and Sabine!!

More pics coming soon!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 6

Buenas dias families!!

Today we had an activity filled excursion in town! Our day started with a quick breakfast before heading off on our adventure. Our first stop was the turtle hatchery, where we were lucky enough to see a baby leatherback before it headed to the ocean. Next, we took a walking tour around town which led us to our empanada cooking lesson before walking to lunch where we had delicious smoothies and sandwiches. We then partook in thirty minutes of community service where we cleaned and prepped kids turtle play sculptures to be painted. After we finished washing the turtles we were taken to the local market where we shopped for gifts from local artisans and craftsman. These gifts included bracelets, wood sculptures, paintings, and keychains. A few other students stayed at the market longer to braid and wrap their hair. To finish off our time in town we played a game of volleyball and soccer with the locals. We then headed back and ate dinner to energize before our night walk.

Sincerely,

Team leaders of the day, Faith and Vanessa

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 7

We started the day off with a relaxing yet super exciting boat tour! We saw tons of crocodiles, poison dart frogs, tiger herons, spider monkeys and iguanas! After a very nutritious lunch, we had a guest speaker, Jerry, show around an organic vanilla farm and talk to us about the safety of being organic and the importance of Vanilla! We learned that there’s 12 different types of vanilla trees that grow in all of Costa Rica and 150 in the world!

Then Maya, the dance instructor, showed us various local dances and we got to be the first people to see the choreography for the Leatherback festival that will be next week! We had such a blast and loved dancing with everyone! Tonight will be our last night walk and we have already been so lucky of seen so many turtles and we are hoping to see even more! We’ll update you tomorrow about it!

Keep shelling on! 🐢

Calvin and Asher

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 8

Hola a todos!

We started the day off in town to do some community service which consisted of planting trees and painting areas that needed fixing. After a lot of hard work we went to grab a smoothie and then had a delicious lunch of rice and beans at home base. After lunch, some of our teammates organized a scavenger hunt which had challenges such as cracking open coconuts, finding the hidden frog, playing volleyball, and much more! Then, we had the opportunity to spend some time at the beach enjoying the waves. After a busy day, we all came together to eat some delicious empanadas! To end the night, we played a game of mystery (“poachers” as we call it) and went to bed early to rest up for our full day of rafting tomorrow!

Written by Maria and Katie

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 9

Buenos Dias!

Today, we woke up early to see the beautiful sunrise and enjoy the early morning views of the beach. After an enjoyable breakfast, we embarked on a fulfilling journey to go rafting. Everyone seemed to love the rafting even though there were some tough and challenging parts . The weather was perfect, we saw awesome views of the jungle an even swam between a canyon. After the first half of rafting, we enjoyed some amazing burritos and sandwiches to fill us up for the final half of our rafting journey. The last part of rafting was exhausting but everyone prevailed and as soon as we got home almost everyone took a nap.

After a long day, we had a well deserved final dinner in Parismina and shared a bonding moment together to commemorate the end of our GLA experience. Singing a song helped bond the group together as many people in our group can sing really well. We also went to see long nosed bats and heard a story at the dock. To end our day, we had a packing party with some music to add some spice to our last night here. It’s been a nice journey here with GLA, and everyone has decided on goals to bring home with them to better improve themselves!

More photos soon ✨

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 10

Final day together!!

Today is the last day we are all together as a group! Today we started the day with a breakfast of rice and beans. This was to fuel up for the next 3.5 hours being in the travel bus. We stopped for a good lunch and sweet snacks. After our long bus ride we finally arrived at hotel Robledal for a chill afternoon. Later that night we had our closing dinner, photo signing with a beautiful picture of the group, a secret santa circle which led to final hugs and we got to show our appreciation for one another.

TIME CAPSULE LETTER

Written by Julio & the Costa Rica Team

Dear Students,

As you open this letter in the future, I hope it brings back the incredible experiences we shared. Our journey was filled with meaningful work and unforgettable moments in Parismina. Remember the trip to town for service work and the rewarding smoothies afterward. Some of us took a swim in the ocean after our beach cleanup, embracing the waves as we made a difference.

One of the most magical moments was encountering a Green sea turtle laying its eggs right outside of our homebase, quietly enjoying its presence and reminding us of the beauty of nature and our responsibility to protect it. Our appreciation circle was another highlight, where emotions ran high and tears flowed freely as we expressed gratitude for one another.

We also shared joyful adventures like ziplining through the canopy and white-water rafting on the Pacuare River, where laughter and excitement filled the air.

We shared this unique experience together, and I encourage you to stay connected, even with those you didn’t get a chance to know well. As you continue your journey, remember our group goal to use gratitude to look at things from a different perspective to have a better understanding and view on life. Carry the lessons and memories from this experience forward, and let them inspire you to make a positive impact in your communities.

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Each of you contributed to the magic we experienced together.

With gratitude and hope,

Amanda, Fernanda, and Julio

BLOG POST FOR JULY 21

This morning our day started early. We had a delicious breakfast of typical costa rican gallo pinto, pancakes, eggs and fruit. We then hopped on the bus to go ziplining. Everyone faced their fears, and enjoyed the 700meter Zipline with an awesome surprise of seeing a sloth. After, we continued driving towards home base and stopped at a local supermarket to get snacks. An hour later we arrived at a dock and boarded the boat to get to home base. We even saw a crocodile on the way! After arriving at home base, we settled in in and did Sunset Circle at the beach. We ended the day with a delicious dinner(courtesy of our amazing kitchen staff!) And at the end of the day we had the arrival of the last member of our group. And that’s just the beginning our adventure!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 22

This morning we woke up, and some students started the day with a morning beach walk and meditation. We had a typical Costa Rican breakfast. Next, we split into mentor groups so we could form new connections. We came up with a group community agreement. Then, we had free time, and we went to the beach, were able to swim a little bit, played some volleyball, and then we had lunch.

After lunch, we all came up with questions to get to know each other, and then we traded off asking each other these deeper questions. After this, we felt more connected and closer as a group. One of the highlights of the day was the sea turtle debate, where we were all assigned different perspectives on a sea turtle conservation bill, and tried to convince judges of our side. The students got very into the debate, and passionately defended their sides, whether it be a local fisherman, poacher, conservation, or foreign activists.

Next, we had a sea turtle guide come in and teach us more about the turtles and what the Sea Turtle Association was about. The captivating slides sparked some new questions, that the guide happily answered. We had dinner, and ate pasta with a delicious sauce, bread, and vegetables. We ended the night with our first sea turtle patrol. Hopefully we see a turtle!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 23

We started off the day by having a great breakfast of eggs, fruit, rice, beans, gallo pinto, and arepas. After the breakfast, we all stayed inside for a few hours due to the heavy rain and got to have a chill morning where we either played some games or had fun talking with our friends and listening to music. A few hours later, we had our mentor group were we talked about riddles that some of our teammates shared to the whole group. Later, we had a quick snack of watermelon, cantaloupe and Oreos, an pitched our ideas to turtle tank(our own version of shark tank).

Following that, we had some rice and beans and beef stew for lunch before quickly starting off on the farm tour guided by Jason. Everyone was introduced to new plants and flowers and tried many fruits like lemon, guava and coconut that we harvested ourself. Shortly after the finish of our tour we had a dinner of chips, rice and beans, and green bean stew. To finish our day we got out on our night patrol and had an awesome visitor : A Green Turtle laying her 114 eggs right outside of Homebase! With that motivation we went and patrol the beach for the rest of the night, scaring away poachers and protecting the turtles.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 24

We started off our busy day by enjoying a breakfast of eggs and fruit. Then shortly we after enjoyed a truck ride into the Parismina seeing sights like monkeys and multiple different birds. Once we got into town we were greeted by our tour guides, Mya and Leo, who walked us around their beautiful neighborhood.

Once we got showed around we appreciated an authentic empanada cooking class where we made delicious empanadas and learned the specifics for example not putting to much ingredients avoided the empanadas from being overfilled and pressing the sides of the empanadas so they did not blow up when frying. After we enjoyed our snack, we jumped into lunch, we had the choice to purchase refreshing smoothies like mango and pineapple.

We also got the opportunity to contact our parents, catching them up on our past few days in Costa Rica! Next door to where we ate lunch, we shopped and browsed handmade items sold at arts & craft fair market. We are so excited to show our family what we got for them! With much anticipation we headed over to play volleyball and soccer with the local kids of Parismina. They certainly were awesome players and even better teammates.

After that, we headed back to homebase where we had our sunset circle and ate dinner. Currently we are about to head out to night patrol, yesterday we saw a beautiful turtle lay about 114 eggs. It was one of the coolest things we experienced on the trip and hoping it happens again!!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 25

Today was packed with animal sights, amazing food and valuable information. We started the morning with deliciously fluffy pancakes and scrambled eggs before embarking on a boat tour ä for sightseeing of all the beautiful natural wildlife that we could find around our home base. On this tour we saw many animals native to Costa Rica including a group of Howler Monkeys, a baby crocodile, an emerald basilisk and a couple of iguanas. After the tour, we relaxed and had an amazing lunch of Caribbean style Rice n‘ beans, coconut chicken and fried patacones (plantain chips).

Later in the day we enjoyed a short tour of an organic vanilla farm before sitting down for a deeper lesson on the vanilla plant itself. Shortly after learning this information iwe recieved a fun-filled but sweat inducing dancing lesson who taught us Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and the Boogie-Boogie. Before ending the day with our last night patrol we filled ourselved with homemade Mac n’ Cheese, and delicious cake made from the vanilla of the organic vanilla farm. And last but not least, our last night patrol, where we got to see our second turtle but it decided it wasn’t the right place to lay eggs and found its way back to the ocean.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 26

For breakfast today, we had arepas, gallos pinto, watermelon, and pineapple. We all loved it and ate a ton. Then we split into two groups to complete community service. One group went to town to help restore a bench and the other group did a beach clean up. We then met up and ate lunch together. We ate bread fruit, rice, beans, picadillo, various vegetables. After our scrumdelicious lunch, we did leadership building games. Including group charades, sandcastle building competition, and drawing telephone. We learned how to trust others and lead groups. Our dinner that night was empanadas of our choice. Cheese, beans, and both.

We all thought they were delicious. Today, we’re very excited for white water rafting tomorrow. We will also play another game as another group building exercise.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 27

Today we celebrated the birthdays of Lily and Laila!

It was sadly our last full day at home base. After breakfast, we took a boat ride to the bus to go to whitewater rafting. On the bus, we enjoyed music and movies. At whitewater rafting, we were split into 5 boats, where we were all accompanied by a guide who helped us through Class 3 and 4 rapids. Both were harsh and everybody got soaked by the river. Halfway through, we ate lunch consisting of build-your-own tacos and sandwiches with watermelon, pineapple, and chips. During rafting, there were some gentle portions where we were allowed to swim. As we passed each other in our rafts, it was common practice to splash the people in the other boat with our paddles. We all had a great time!

After rafting, we headed back to home base (with a stop at the Maxi Palí supermarket). At home base, we relaxed, listened to music, and did Sunset Circle and played a game where we choreographed a dance to the song We’re All In This Together before eating dinner. After dinner, we had an activity called the appreciation circle, where we tapped each other after statements to show how much we have grown together. We then played a long game of Mafia (sadly, the Mafia won). Finally, we packed our things in preparation for heading back to San Jose, stretching bedtime to get it all done. We’re all excited and sad to be leaving.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 28

We started the day early. Some went to the beach to meditate while others finished packing. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast of rice and beans, scrambled eggs, fruit, and arepas. After breakfast, we had some time to clean up. Everyone made their way to the boat as we said goodbye to our homebase. After the boat ride, we split into two buses and made our way to the hotel. On the way, we stopped for lunch. Everyone enjoyed their Casado, and when everyone was done, some bought various pastries from the restaurant while others went back to the buses. Then we finished the bus ride and arrived at the hotel. We had some time to spare before our last sunset circle and dinner. During this time, many chose to start getting ready for dinner and take some photos with each other for our last night. All the students voted for who they thought were the leaders in the group, and these individuals were acknowledged during dinner. Today was bittersweet, but every moment was cherished. Pura Vida

Costa Rica: Sea Turtle Initiative (July 7 – July 16, 2024)

PROGRAM PHOTO ALBUM
TIME CAPSULE LETTER

Greetings from Costa Rica!

Some months have already passed since our visit to the Sea Turtle Initiative project, and we want you to remember all the moments we had together!

From day 1, getting to know each other, the expectation of who was coming next and who were all the people who you were gonna be on this trip with. Jumping on the bus and heading towards home base, first stopping at your first adventure : Zip lining. Getting ready with all the equipment and getting through all lines .We continued our way to HomeBase, and there was our first boat ride from Caño Blanco to Parismina’s Green Gold Lodge, house of Jason and Lazy.

We got to meet our surroundings and learnt about the rules, the service activities and the local culture. Later on we spoke about the importance of night patrols, the change of mindset of many people in Parismina towards conservation, that got the biggest percentage of turtles back to the beach. And just then, we started with our first night patrol, where we luckily could see a Green Turtle laying her eggs and walking back to the ocean! The patrols grew into all of us as we got some time to bond with each other while helping the turtles.

Through the days we started to meet each other more and more, learn about leadership and enjoy ourselves with our teammates. The sea was strong, but we still got to swim and jump the waves a couple times. When it rained we learnt to enjoy walking under the raindrops. We also got to pitch some new ideas in the turtle tank, build our own beach olympics , and end up the white water rafting session all safely to shore.

Overall, we made new friends, had fun and learned about turtle conservation and Costa Rican culture . Also, do you remember our OMG- One Meaningful Goal-. We decided we had a blast without our phones and got to connect much more with others, and take back home the goal to Cut Down Phone Time. Have you created more connections outside your screens? Used your phones less while being at the dinner table? We would love to hear how you have applied this goal and how it has impacted you!

Remember to share your personal goals with GLA too, we love to hear how you are BEING THE CHANGE back home!

Fernanda- Mentor, & all your team!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 7

Greetings from Costa Rica!

We are thrilled to announce that the majority of our students have safely arrived in San José and are settling into our temporary Home Base. It’s going to be an exciting summer filled with adventure, learning, and growth.

The group is buzzing with anticipation for the days ahead. Students are eager to experience zip lining through the lush rainforests, immersing themselves in Costa Rican culture, and forging strong connections with their peers.

Although Will, Noah, and Noah have not yet arrived, they are on their way and will join us soon. Once they do, our Sea Turtle Group will be complete, and we can fully embark on this incredible journey together.

We will leave early in the morning to participate in our first adventure—ziplining! Stay tuned for more updates as we dive into our activities. Pura Vida!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 8

Today we traveled to Parismina and it was a lot of fun! Our group got to meet each other and get to know each other more.

It was an early morning for some of us , waking up at sunrise to swim before getting on the road. We experienced the cultural food gallo pinto of Costa Rica in morning breakfast.

After breakfast we travelled to the ziplining course. There we walked through a butterfly garden and also saw some frogs and snakes. Zipline was amazing, it was fast and exciting. The longest Zipline was around 700meters which was really cool to fly for so long! The wildlife at the zipline was also awesome. We saw Toucans, Coatis, and even a Sloth.

Later on we took a boat ride to home base, a very cool ride full of nature and even some baby crocodiles around as well. Now at Home Base we continue to get to know each other and have lots of fun!

PS: We are working to disconnect from our phones this week so you might not hear from us every day. But don’t worry, no news is good news! We will do calls home the afternoon of day 5. Of course, our directors will have their phones 24/7.

Photos coming soon!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 9

This morning after 8 o’clock breakfast we played a group game called 20 questions. This game was where you anonymously write a fact about yourself and have others match the groups facts to each person. This helped us get to know fun facts about our peers and get to know each other better.

After lunch we had free time students spent their time resting, playing game’s, or just chatting. After some free time we had a turtle debate. This debate had four teams all taking different roles and was focused on a bill that impacted every groups role. The debate holders would trade off asking questions and then groups would answer them based off of their roles.

Next, we did an activity where people would write down something they liked about them and then put it in a bag. Right after the activity a speaker came in to tell us more about turtles, protecting them, and what his job is. From this we learned information like how turtles lay their eggs, at what time of year, and the importance of protection them. one thing that we learned as well was how Sea turtles have a “built in gps” to guide them to where their eggs were before they hatched. Next we had dinner and after dinner we had our first night patrol where along the beach where the turtles lay their eggs, we all were excited that we got to see a green sea turtle on our first night patrol. Overall today we learned a lot about turtles and the importance of this program.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 10

We started an early day . Everyone was a bit tired because of the night patrol that finished late but with a great reward : we saw out first Green Turtle lay its eggs and return to the ocean! For being our first day on beach patrol , we were very lucky.

After a good breakfast, we went on a tour of the farm surrounding home base. We saw different types of fruits, like pineapple, soursop and jocote. We got to pitch our ideas in a turtle tank and ask for out own thought activities to be included. We all relaxed until lunch, and then we had a beach clean-up, where we found lots of plastics and trash to fill around 5 bags. We swam in the ocean for a while, and hung out again until dinner. Tonight we will have our second night patrol.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 11

Hola! Today we woke up for breakfast and went out to see some animals on our boat tour, we really enjoyed the boat trip by seeing monkeys and reptiles. We saw Poison Dart Frogs and they looked small and red, which are poisonous to even humans. After lunch, during the vanilla explanation we found out how much time it takes for plants to grow and be harvested. We also learned that the standard for organic vanilla is higher in Costa Rica. We also enjoyed the dance lessons and we learned a bunch of fun dances like the Boogey Woogey and bachata. Our group is having a blast during this trip.

Note to families – we are having trouble sending photos with the WiFi, but we will add more photos as soon as we can.

We started off the day by eating arepas. Then we got ready to go into town. We had an extravagant tour of it and learned a lot about the place. Afterwards, we moved towards a nice local house and enjoyed a cooking class. We made delicious empanadas with the help of two women and ate them after.

Once we finished cooking and eating we went from store to store and bought drinks and smoothies. We then ate cheeseburgers for lunch .The burgers were delicious and we were given an hour of phone time.

Half of the group got their hair braided by the local artisans and at last we also enjoyed playing a Volleyball and Soccer game with the locals.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 13

Hola from Costa Rica!

This morning after breakfast we started playing some leadership activities that pairs from the mentor groups created, the first one was called Sharpen Your Eyes which consists of finding a hidden stuffed animal in the area chosen. we used this activity to develop our observation and eyesight skills which are important to spot different creatures in Costa Rica. We then did telecommunication
in this we have to whisper a sentence to the person next to you but the person has to change a word every time without changing the meaning of the sentence.

After lunch, we did capture the coconut. 2 teams were created, these teams had to take the other teams coconut and bring it to the their base. We learned and strengthened our skills in communication teamwork and trust and respect for our fellow teammates.

Then we did the beach build. One person instructed a blindfolded builder to build a castle in the sand. The groups were judged by staff who gave it a score out of 10. We learned communication and teamwork skills from this activity. After this we did Inside outside. The group shared how they viewed themselves and how they wanted to be viewed. Using a bag to represent this change. This activity showed us openess and honesty. After dinner we enjoyed free time and packed our stuff for white water rafting tomorrow.

Today we started our day earlier than usual by having a delicious breakfast around 7 at home base. Soon after, we hopped on the busses and headed to the river. We got in our groups and started to make our way through the rapids. On our way, we rafted through canyons and enjoyed the beautiful scenery around us. After getting to the bottom of the river, we had tacos for lunch and talked about our exciting adventure.

Finally, we loaded on the buses one more time to go back to Parismina. We celebrated our last night at the Green-Gold Eco-Lodge by taking about our week and watching movies. It was a great day full of laughter and excitement, but also a time where we got to reflect on the friendships we made this week.

PROGRAM PHOTO ALBUM
TIME CAPSULE LETTER

Hi Crew,

I hope you’re all doing great and settling back into life at home. Reflecting on our amazing time together, we’re so proud of everything we accomplished—from releasing baby turtles and playing volleyball with the locals in Parismena to conquering fears while ziplining and white water rafting through the Costa Rican jungle.

Some highlights include swimming in the river from our rafts during white water rafting, enjoying the breathtaking views from our zipline while trying not to spin, and helping each other out during bus rides. We also got to explore our farm at Home Base and see the beautiful landscapes of Costa Rica. Celebrating each other on our last night in Costa Rica, everything we did created memories we won’t forget.

Our One Meaningful Goal is leading the community to awareness and proactivity by educating and volunteering within the community.

Let’s keep that spirit alive by continuing to make a positive impact in our own communities through education and volunteering. Remember the fun, the friendships, and the sunsets we shared. You all have the power to inspire change. Remember, only a few people know what that experience was like, so continue to stay in touch and support each other. Keep our group active, organize video calls, and plan reunions when possible.

Thanks for helping to make these special memories in an amazing place and good luck with all your projects. Pura Vida!

With Appreciation,

Amanda, Fernanda, and Julio

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 24

Hola,

We are so excited to share that everyone has arrived safely in Costa Rica. Our first day together has been filled with fun and bonding as we prepare for the incredible adventures ahead.

Tomorrow, we’re headed to Parismina, and the excitement is visible! To kick off our journey, we took a tour of our current lodge learning about its owl program and butterfly garden. As the sun began to set, we gathered for our Sunset Circle. This was a special time where we got to learn everyone’s names and share what we’re most looking forward to during our time together. It was heartwarming to hear everyone’s hopes and dreams for the days to come. We spent the evening playing a few lively rounds of UNO which quickly became a group favorite. We also enjoyed some chill vibes listening to music, which set the perfect mood for our evening activities. It’s clear that we have an amazing group of individuals ready to make the most of this experience.

PS. Once we get to Parismina we’ll be detaching from our phones more, embracing the jungle, and appreciating the beach. We’ll send a daily blog but won’t be calling or texting daily. Of course, our directors can be reached 24/7 if anything comes up.

Pura Vida!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 25

Today the group began our journay to Parismina, After 2 hrs, we stopped for lunch to engage in a leadership activity to gain on understanding on how everybody feels being disconnected from their electronics. We asked the group various questions to disagree or agree if electronics are essential part of their day. Once we-arrived to homebase, we swam in the warm oceans, played games & began orientation. After that we had dinner, did our community agreements , and played bonding games, such as “the wind blows…” which showed us that were more similar than we think, we ended the day seeing a monkey and sloth outside. We’re very excited to see what the rest of the week holds for us

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 26

Today we started off with a group breakfast at 8AM. All the food here is so delicious and nutritious, we’re very grateful to our chefs here at home base. After breakfast we had free time so some of us played soccer on the beach, and went on walks around our home base. There were so many monkeys and beautiful flowers!

After lunch, we broke up into roles for our sea turtle debate. In this, we had a simulated discussion where we got to step into the shoes of the locals of Parismina. This opened our eyes to different perspectives regarding the poaching of sea turtles in the community.

Next, Michael, our local directors relative visited our home base and educated us on the sea turtles living in and around Parismina. He touched on their nesting habits, roles in the ecosystem, and how the percentage of turtle hatchlings able to make it out to sea has increased from 2% to 68% thanks to ASTOP (Association of Saving Turtles of Parismina). We’re thrilled to be doing our part for a greater good. All this knew knowledge will be useful for our first night patrol tonight. We hope to be a presence on the beach tonight and help protect the turtles of Parísmina.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 27

To begin, we went on a tour of Jason’s (Local Director) farm where we were exposed to the diversity of wildlife in Costa Rica including various different plant species. During the farm tour, we had the opportunity to taste a fresh coconut along with the meat and the water found within the plant. Furthermore, we tried cane sugar and heart of palm while Jason explained the health benefits along with the growing process of each plant. After the farm tour, we had some free time where we collectively competed in a beach volleyball tournament that involved teamwork and communication.

Additionally, we went on a beach clean up where we divided into two groups and indulged in picking up trash ranging from micro plastics to larger plastic objects. During the beach clean up time, we were enlightened on the struggles of Parismina as well as the experience of local/ traveling volunteers as they assist in cleaning the community. To end the day off, we participated in a night patrol with the goal of seeing sea turtles in order to ensure they make it out of sea.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 28

We had an early start to our day with a surprise sea turtle release. We sent off five baby leatherback turtles into the ocean to start their new lives! Afterwards, we had breakfast and hopped on trucks to head to the town. Two of the ASTOP leaders gave us a tour of the hatchery and of the town of Parismina, including a cooking class where we made empanadas. Then, we ate lunch and got smoothies and ice cream. Later, we went to the market to check out the local shops and buy gifts for our families. Some of us got their hair done as well! Then we played a few games of beach volleyball with some of the locals and headed back to homebase. It was really cool to see how the locals lived and to learn more about Parismina. Later, we had dinner and completed a reflection on our trip so far. We then played some charades and other camp games. Afterwards we went to bed to end our day.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 29

Hola from Costa Rica!! Today was the 6th day of our GLA Adventure. We first woke up and had eggs, watermelon, pineapple, arepas, and fruit juice. After we ate, we went straight to the boat and saw a tour of all the canals and rivers that are surrounding us. We saw tons of wildlife including different types of monkeys, baby alligators, birds, frogs cows. All the animals were super cool and were appreciative to be able to see such amazing creatures in which we never would have seen. Once we returned, we had chicken fried rice for lunch. After lunch we had free time until Jason’s brother introduced us to local and organic farming of vanilla in costa rica. He taught us that the pineapple and banana farms were harming many different types of wildlife including sea turtles and other species. He also informed us to only buy organic bananas and pineapples as the non-organic alternatives are extremely harming to the environment. Soon after that presentation, we participated in a leadership activity similar to shark tank in preparation for games tomorrow.

Today we started off by playing a speed dating inspired game. This game taught us to remember the little things about one another and improved our communication skills. Then we walked out to the beach for our daily sunset circle. We returned back to home base for a delicious dinner which was pas with tomato sauce, garlic bread, salad, ana monade. Lastly, we finished out the night by going on a night patrol walk for sea turtles from 8pm-12am. That’s all for today!

Adios, from Molly and Niki!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 1

Today we went white water rafting pretty much the entire day, it was much more intense but entertaining than we antcipated. We went down a bunch of “level 4″ out of 5 rapids which meant that the intensity level of the rapids was high. Our raft guide was super helpful and had us easily get our boat through the waters. At the midpoint of our rafting journey, we had lunch, where we made our own tacos burritos, before we continued down the river. One highlight was a canyon area where we were able to get out of the water and float in it similarly to otters. When our rafting journey was complete, we drove back and had our leadership activity where we created a community goal for our group.

Our community goal ended up being “Leading the community to awareness and proactivity by educating and volunteering”. Reflecting on the day, it was an incredibly fun and exciting ride, both literally and figuratively, and it was wrapped up with a leadership activity that brought our closely-knit group even closer as a community.

6 A.M. was the earliest this group had ever seen the sun. By boat and bus, we made it to our zip-lining destination! GLA and zip-lining staff guided 21 students through their fears of heights, bugs, and humidity. All students and staff safely made the trip by soaring through the sky, deep in the Costa Rican jungle. By the end of our thrilling zip, we all filed into the buses and vans that would take us back to the Robledal hotel.

There, we prepared for our departure tomorrow, said tearful goodbyes, and celebrated the birthdays of students with piñatas and cake. Just before dinner, the leadership awards in six different categories were announced and given, along with meaningful moments signed by every student. While the students will miss their time in Costa Rica, they are all eager to return to their families, friends, and pets.

Adios, Pura Vida!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 3

Dear Costa Rica and GLA,

Today is our final day with you. The first group already said goodbye, as they had an early start and left Home Base at 4:15 AM. The others enjoyed one last breakfast at Home Base and left at either 10:15 AM or 4:30 PM, depending on their flight time. This adventure was truly incredible. From releasing baby turtles to playing volleyball with the locals of Parismina, we learned so much about what we’re doing and how it affects other communities. We will try to be more conscious and proactive in our own communities and strive to be better leaders. Everyone had so much fun with you, but it’s safe to say we were also all excited to get back home. Goodbye and thank you, Costa Rica. It was nice visiting you. Pura Vida!
