PROGRAM PHOTO ALBUM
TIME CAPSULE LETTER

Justin here!

It’s now been a while since our adventures together in Costa Rica, and I just wanted to check in with you and let you know how your work impacted the local community here.

At Escuela Santa Teresa Norte, they have finished painting the buildings we started and they look beautiful! A special shout out to everyone who worked with the students in the cafeteria. Your work has not gone unnoticed and Doña Marta and all of the students we got to work with are grateful for all of the hard work we put in this summer. In addition, the Escuela La Cajeta has completed painting the floors and the playground. The projects came out excellent and were much easier to paint when it wasn’t raining.

I really am proud of you all. Your efforts to integrate yourselves in the community in Costa Rica with our cultural events and the ways that you pushed your boundaries during the adventure activities was exceptional.

Please take a look at our One Major Goal that we all committed to while you were here, and reflect on where you are at in your endeavor to be more active in your communities. I know each of you has the ability to become someone who can be trusted with the responsibility of leadership.

All of your unique personalities had an impact and created special moments for our group as a whole. Although we can think of endless such moments, here are some of our favorites:

• Empanada making
• Endless hugs at the school
• So many games of pool
• Paint everywhere
• Pineapple popsicles
• Trivia and Movie night
• Baldi Hot Springs
• Baby cows
• Fishing for lunch
• Infamous Tubing Day
• The sweaty dance class
• Water slides
• Our quick zipline through the treetops
• Our extremely heartwarming appreciation circle, and the feelings that come with recognizing others and being recognized ourselves

We hope you know that you each made a lasting impression on all of us. You showed heart in your friendships with one another, embraced the challenges of the program with humor and poise, and showed your commitment to service and leadership. We’re excited for what is in store for each of you. We wish you a bright future filled with joy and delight.

All the best,
Justin, Marbella, Liz, Emily, and Toasty

BLOG POST FOR JULY 21

Good Evening to our GLA Family and Friends!

I’m Justin Nichols, the International Director for Global Leadership Adventure’s Initiative for Children Program. We are very excited to get started on our program, serve our community, and grow and develop as leaders.

Our students have made it safely to home base at Finca los Corales in San Carlos, and should have access to the internet fairly frequently in the evenings throughout the coming weeks, keeping in mind our cell phone policy and our rural location.

We are looking forward to having our final two students join us over the next few days as they arrive.

A look at the next few days:

– Orientation and swim tests are tomorrow.
– There’s an exciting coffee workshop on Tuesday run by our Home Base host, Don Alfredo.
– Wednesday has us visiting an Organic Pineapple farm to learn more about one of Costa Ricas most important agricultural products.

There are so many more exciting events to come, not to mention a good amount of community service and leadership programming!

Starting tomorrow our leaders of the day will be writing these blog posts, so keep an eye out!

Thank you so much for sending your students on this amazing program, we are excited to have them and we are sure to have incredible adventures together!

Be the change,
Justin Nichols

BLOG POST FOR JULY 22

We started off the day with a delicious breakfast of eggs, sausage, salad, orange juice, and of course, very delicious beans and rice!!! We then went straight into orientation where we discussed rules and boundaries and also played a plethora of games such as Ninja, Pterodactyl, and Elephant Ball, learning each other’s names in the process. Everyone targeted our Director, Justin. Subsequently we had free time until lunch began. Our lunch consisted of shrimp fried rice, refried beans, salad, and blackberry juice to drink. Everything was greatly prepared! Students split off into groups for card games, soccer, and general socialization.

Soon after lunch was over we began the swim test, which was made up of a standard swim test, treading water for one minute, then lastly floating on our back for ten seconds. Each of our peers passed tremendously! We spent a few hours swimming around in the lake, played volleyball in the water, had a few canoe/paddle board trips, and it was overall an amazing time! During free time we played spoons, uno, yankee/skittles, as well as a lot of restime time due to our exhausting day so far. A value tree was soon held as an activity where we talked about community rules and new ideas of how we can be respecting and helping other peers and ourselves.

After that we had a dinner of pasta with tomato sauce, salad, beans, rice, and strawberry juice. We also celebrated the homebase owner’s(Don Alfredo) son’s (Leandro) birthday with some delicious cake! Then, as today’s student leaders, we got the opportunity to wash the dishes of our peers. Finally, we attended Marbella’s presentation on Costa Rican culture and the ways we’ll be participating in service learning. Overall we had a wonderful first day and hope that the rest continues to be as positive and eventful as today was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 23

Today we awoke to the sound of pouring rain after a night of thunderstorms- a common occurrence in Costa Rica since we are here during the rainy season. We started off the day with breakfast, consisting of rice, beans, fruit, and sausage, before heading off to our first day of service! For the next few days we’ll be repainting the walls and getting to know the students each morning. It was a highlight for many today and we’re excited to continue our work tomorrow!

After service we returned to home base for lunch where we continue to discover the abundance of rice and beans in our Costa Rican diet! We also enjoyed fresh fruit juices which have been with every meal!

The schedule this afternoon granted lots of free time that has been filled with rest, bonding, and many, many games. Some highlights include Soccer, cards, and “skittles”- a game that definitely involves some dives across the pool table! We also welcomed an interesting culture presentation about coffee beans grown in Costa Rica and enjoyed some samples!

This evening we began mentor groups where we reflect and discuss our day as well as participate in small group activities. Tomorrow we will continue our service and take a tour of a local pineapple farm!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 24

By Coco and Gabby

We were awoken peacefully this morning to the sound of the cows in the pasture mooing. Then, we started our day off with more rice and beans, plátano, eggs, and organice juice etc. Then we were off to our service at the local school of Santa Theresa. There, we continued painting the school which we started the day before, in addition to spending time with the kids and watching their performances in celebration of the Anexion de partido de Guanacaste. These performances consisted of dancing in traditional Costa Rican attire and the recital of “bombas”, a type of poem.A lucky few got to try traditional meals prepared for the celebration by the schools faculty.

After service, we returned to home base where we had lunch, which was chicken, rice, beans and salad.

Shortly after lunch we left for the much anticipated pineapple farm tour, where we learned the ropes of organic pineapple farming in Costa Rica, one of the world’s leading pineapple producers! (Disclaimer: plucking the leaves of the pineapple in not an effective or accurate form of testing a pineapples ripeness).

We discussed in depth the social, economic and environmental impacts of conventional versus organic farming and the importance of implementing more friendly farming practices in this day and age.

With bellies full of freshly machetied pineapple and piña colada, we started our journey home, with a stop to Walmart on the way to satisfy everyone’s yearning for a taste of home.

We then ate a late dinner which was rice and beans, hamburgers, fries and salad. The leaders of the day did dishes at a record speed, (probably faster than any team of leaders of the day) while maintaining the quality and standard of cleanliness.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 25

By Dani and Sahej

The day started around 8 officially with gallo pinto, eggs, toast, and natural orange juice. Soon after that we had our morning announcements which our phrase of the day “vamos a la escuela!” meaning “lets go to to the school!” After we went to “la escuela” upon arriving we realized we we barely had enough paint to finish the school. We then proceeded to play soccer with the kids and have ice cream. The flavors included strawberry, vanilla with the chocolate outside and condensed milk.

Once we returned from our service it was scorching hot outside so we proceeded to go to the lake, and play some pool, and card games. An hour after we arrived we had lunch, which included a variety of fried rices, salad, garlic bread and pineapple juice.

After lunch we had lots of free time to recover from the long couple days of service. To unwind, many of us took long naps then swam in the lake. We then did a discussion activity revolving around sustainable pineapple farming and ate lechón (roast pork leg), with rice ,beans, and salad. Later we had our mentor groups and enjoyed some time on our phones with friends before bed.

After having breakfast we presented the word of the day, “catarata” meaning “waterfall”. One short bus ride later, and we arrived at La Fortuna to see a beautiful “catarata” in person. We went on a short but steep hike before reaching the waterfall. Due to recent rains, the waterfall was too intense to swim, however, we had fun taking pictures and enjoying the view. We hiked back and cooled down with delicious fruit smoothies and ice cream. We returned to the bus and after 20 minute bus ride, arrived at Baldi Hot Springs. There, we enjoyed an extensive buffet with fresh fruit, pasta, chicken, and much more mouth watering food. Comfortably full, we split into small groups to explore the Hot Springs. We raced down waterslides, relaxed in the sauna, and rested in the Hot Springs. We traveled back to home base where we had fried fish for dinner with salad, fries, rice, and beans, washed down with sweet guanabana juice. Overall, it was a fun adventure day where we got to explore and appreciate the beautiful nature of Costa Rica and have some much needed relaxation after three days of hard work.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 27

Today we were surprised to start our day off with pancakes and a wide variety of delicious fruits – it was extremely good! After breakfast we all loaded on to the bus to head over to the Juan Castro Blanco National Park. First, we watched a few of our fellow students fish for their lunch in the nearby pond. Next, we took a hike through the park along with an educational portion where we learned about the indigenous plants and a few of the animals that feed on them. After our beautiful hike, we took a pleasant lunch break that the park had made for us, and a quick look at the geodes and rocks that the owner had collected (Shoutout to our amazing translators!)

Once we had finished at the park we took a nice detour into the town La Fortuna to shop for ourselves (and get a few gifts for family and friends), stopping at many fun shops and a small art market where vendors were selling everything from glass blown items, to skin and body products, like jewelry, body lotions and more! We were able to walk arround, have local food, like empanadas and continue to peruse the colorful shops. Once we had finished in town we boarded back on to the bus for a calming ride back to camp.

We were met back at camp by the delicious smell of chicken, rice, and beans. After dinner we moved into our activity for the evening, which involved a deeper reflection of what our purpose is on this trip. We finally finished off the day with card games and free time.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 29

Starting out the day out we had a delicious meal consisting of fresh fruits, gallo pinto, and eggs. Then we headed off to a new school with grades 1-6 splitting into groups of three, one assisting with the construction of a treehouse, another cleaning the floors, and finally one playing music for the kids while teaching them English. After a few rounds of soccer we were exasperated and head back to home base to heave chicken along with gallo pinto. After an exquisite lunch some of us went to take naps while others went down to the docks to play pool and swim. Then Justin hosted trivia and Linden and Sasha won two out of three rounds crowning them the champions. Afterwards we learned how to make empanadas using beef, cheese, beans, and a special Justin empanada filling (egg and potato). Then the empanadas were then fried and enjoyed them with rice and fruit salad. We ended the day off with mentor groups and spending time with our friends.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 30

By Emilia and Avery

We started the day off with a classic Costa Rican dish of gallo pinto, alongside eggs, fruit, cereal, bread, and the fruit juice of the day. Afterwards we headed on to the bus to head for our adventure of the day, tubing down a river. After our hour drive we arrived to the tubing place, where we then received a helmet and a tube, starting our adventure. We all had to go down the rapids one at a time, with guides helping us along the way. The journey took about an hour long, and even though it was raining it was definitely a highlight of the trip. By the end of our adventure just about every single person had flipped out of the tube, yet we all left with bright smiles. Before we started our journey back we were also able to stop at a market, where we bought snacks for the road, and rest of the trip. Next we started our journey back to home base, many of us napping on the way back.

Then we had lunch, we ate rice with seafood, beans and potatoes. We then had free time for 3 hours. Some watched a movie, others took a nap and others hung out on the dock. We then took the bus for 20 minutes to get ice cream in a shop. We saw an iguana who was sleeping. After eating our ice cream we took the bus back and arrived at the lodge to eat. We ate a classic rice with garbanzo beans, chicken and potato soup. After there was a karaoke session where everyone was able to exploit their singing talents. The curfew being at 9:30 p.m., everyone had to go back to their rooms to sleep.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 31

Written by Ariel and Fiona

Today, July 31st, we began our day with the lovely surprise of pancakes and fresh fruit for breakfast, as opposed to the usual Costa Rican breakfast foods. After the meal, we prepared for our second day of service at the second school we’ve visited. Once there, some of us assisted in painting the outdoor pathways, while others spent time entertaining and getting to know the students of the school. Some of the games played with them were freeze-dance, hot potato, duck duck goose, and fútbol. After the service, and a long few hours of the school kids beating us at our own games, we arrived back at home base to rest, eat lunch, and spend quality time together.

Following the service and lunch was a nice short break of resting and showering of all the sweat put into the school. At around 2:30, we traveled to a small abode that was quite colorful and was filled with cultural decorations. There we learned from a Zumba dancer three or more types of dancing such as merengue, bachata, and salsa. Some found it quite difficult to catch on to different steps, while others had the spirit of dancing within them. On the outside of the room where we danced, thermometers were found which proves that it was a sauna dance workshop. It was quite a workout!! Coming to the home base we played some activities like pool and uno. Some enjoyed their time at the lake swimming, more specifically front flipping off paddle boards. This whole day concludes with a nice American style meal consisting of burgers and of course rice and beans. We are looking forward to our last but not least day of service tomorrow.

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 1

We started the day by eating a delicious breakfast. This consisted of gallo pinto, eggs, toast, and orange juice. We then left for community service at 9am. As we arrived to the school, there were different groups painting and helping kids in class. The group that was painting had to sand, wipe down, and paint over the original paint of the school playground. The group working with the kids helped them with math and social studies.

Once the community service was over, we came back to the cabins for a much needed lunch. The lunch included chicken, rice, refried beans, and salad. After lunch, everyone split into their mentor groups and completed leadership activities. We worked on goal setting and played a game with our group. We then had free time until dinner. For dinner, we had pasta with meatballs, sauce, cheese, garlic bread, and pineapple juice.

Instead of mentor groups, we celebrated Linden’s birthday. To do this, we hung up the piñata and took turns hitting it until it fell. It was filled with candy!! After this, we brought out a cake for Linden and everyone enjoyed sharing an enjoyable evening fiesta. Overall, today was very productive and we can’t wait for the next day.

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 2

By Bella and Viola

Today was the last day of our 14-day immersive service learning trip to Costa Rica. As usual, at 8am there was breakfast.

We left at 8:45 to go zip lining. It was seven stations with a beautiful view of the park, and the volcano Arenal . There was also a rappelling, but that was optional for the people daring enough to get their feet wet. After unclipping from our harnesses, we piled into a tractor and heading back to the buses. We stopped at the mini mart adjacent to the zip lining service. Then, we boarded the buses for an hour long ride back to camp, and promptly headed to the tables for lunch.

After lunch, we had free time. Most of us spent time packing our suitcases to prepare for our flights tomorrow. Afterwards, some people went down to the dock to swim and play pool. There were other games, such as chess and BS, that were played as well. People got ready for the formal dinner, and at around 6, everyone met on the front lawn and took photos. Dinner was the typical meal of rice and beans, steak fajitas, and other appetizers.

Our last mentor group was spent doing an anonymous appreciation circle, in which prompts were said and people would tap the people who they believe fit the prompt. It was a super fun and emotional moment. As we wait for lights out, we say our final appreciations and goodbyes. We will all miss one another and always remember the memories we made along these two weeks.

Love you all and thank you for an amazing two weeks! Signing out.

Costa Rica: Surf, Sports & Sustainability (July 30 – August 12, 2024)

PROGRAM PHOTO ALBUM
TIME CAPSULE LETTER

Written by Caitlin & the Costa Rica Team

¡Pura vida chicos!

It’s hard to believe that it has already been so long since our time in Costa Rica came to an end. Often, it feels like yesterday that we were working at Rancho Avellanas shoveling goat poop, surfing Avellanas, and enjoying so many Peace Retreat pancakes. We hope that you have all had a great fall starting your next year of high school and continue to think back fondly on the experiences you had in Costa Rica.

We want to take this opportunity to remind you of your hands-on work and the great learning opportunities you took advantage of while there:
Planting trees and playing with kids in the community of Las Delicias after a chat with Frank about the impacts of forest fires in Guanacaste
Turning over the compost beds, weeding the garden beds, cuddling the baby goats, and planting corn with Jean Carlos and Chimichurri at Rancho Avellanas
Doing such a wide range of projects with Marcia, Alberto, and the Guanacaste Water Center team at their center, Los Pargos school and the swampy forest of Junquillal – making bags of compost, bagging plants, planting trees, cleaning tools, learning about the watershed, and so much more.
Participating in a beach cleanup at Playa Negra with local community members and playing games with the students from the local school Los Pargos.
Learning in-depth about Costa Rican culture through its history and dances, ecotourism and sustainable development, environmental problems and struggles, food, the history of its sports, people, and language.

We are still so grateful for this group’s incredible positivity and hard work ethic that you brought to each and every service project, no matter how difficult. We were also very impressed by the way you continually checked in on each other, took every situation in stride, and made lasting relationships. We look back fondly on the memories of our catamaran trip, your Marco Polo games around the pool, and flipping over while tubing down the river.

And a friendly reminder about the goals that you crafted with your mentor groups at the end of the program:
– Adrián’s group: Improve our Spanish through 2025
– Caitlin’s group: Reduce your average screen time by one hour every day for the next month (If this went well for you in August, we recommend you do another month of reduced screen time!)

We’d love to hear from you about how you’ve been working on these goals as well as your personal goals! Thank you for helping to make these special memories and the best of luck with improving yourself, your communities, and the communities you explore abroad.

Pura Vida,
Mentors Caitlin Epstein and Adrián Brais

Hola family and friends!

It was an exciting arrival day today for our 24 Surf, Sports, and Sustainability students. Most students arrived in the late morning/early afternoon, and once everyone got settled into their rooms, we got to know our beautiful home base and began to get to know each other.

We enjoyed a delicious family dinner of pesto pasta and chicken with fresh salad. We ended the nights with creating name signs
for our rooms and cabins before everyone went to rest up for orientation day.

Stay tuned for more daily updates coming soon from our Leaders of the Day!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 31

Hola family and friends!

We kicked off our first full day with a delicious typical Costa Rican breakfast, a tour of the our amazing home base, Peace Retreat, and practicing our swim skills before surf lessons start tomorrow.

After a lunch of arroz con pollo, we learned about Costa Rican culture and got taught some traditional dance moves by one of our amazing mentors, Adrián, and then tried local fruits – cas, starfruit, mamons, jocote, dragonfruit, and mamon chinos.

The students also met the owner of Peace Retreat, who introduced us to the space and led us in some simple yoga movements as a teaser for his full class later in the program. Then, we got to know the staff and went over the rules for the next two weeks.

In the evening, we loaded up the bus to visit Playa Negra, where students walked along the beach and played a pick up game of football.

They wrapped up the day with a dinner of fish and chips and our very first mentor groups. Tomorrow begins surf lessons, local service projects, and blog posts written by our student leaders of the day!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 1

Buenos Dias everyone.

Today we were awakened by the howler monkeys and ready to start a new day. We all gathered for breakfast, and then put on our rash guards and headed down to Playa Avellanas. As a group, with the help of the wonderful instructors, we battled the white water and took a chance at surfing for the first time. Everyone learned how to surf while also learning the safe way to wipe out and have fun.

We then came back for a delicious lunch, followed by some rest so that we were well prepared for our first service trip. As our first trip, we went to the school Las Delicias and met with a bunch of lovely students. Serving as group of leaders for the students, we picked up shovels and carefully picked up plants and helped the students plant them in the forest. This helps to prevent forest fires, which happen later in the year. Not only did we get to bond with the students by planting trees and helping the community, but we also ended the day playing sports all together and creating amazing new memories. All of the students were super polite, and we as a group, also began to speak some Spanish. Planting the trees not only helps to save the environment but it also gave us the perfect opportunity to meet new people and make new connections.

We then traveled to a local market before returning for dinner and some reflective conversations. Overall, today was full of new experiences that helped us become part of the Costa Rican community.

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 2

Hola family and friends!

Today was a wonderfully diverse and enriching day on our peace retreat. We started our morning early, tired but excited for the day ahead. After a Costa Rican breakfast, we boarded the bus that took us to a sustainable goat farm nestled in the serene countryside. The goats were adorable, and many of us had the chance to milk them, a unique and surprisingly calming experience. However not as fun for others! The highlight, however, was tasting the fresh goat cheese—it was incredibly creamy and flavorful, a true testament to the farm’s sustainable practices.

Then we shifted gears and got our hands dirty with some gardening. It was a bit disgusting dealing with the compost but we all tried our best.

Later, we visited the house of a local woman to learn how to make empanadas, which were eaten very quickly. After our meal, a few of us played football under the hot sun, which was both exhilarating and exhausting.

As the day wound down, we returned to our accommodations and dressed up for a night out. We decided to indulge in crepes at a local market and hang out spot. Although the wait for our food was quite a while, music kept us going. To end the day we sang loudly on the bus. Today was very fun and we are all excited for what is to come!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 3

Pura vida familia 🌻

We started our day early, having breakfast at 7 a.m. After a hearty American breakfast, we took the bus to Rancho Avellanas. There, we spent three and a half hours shoveling compost, planting trees, and weeding a garden. Not only did we learn about the different resources used at a sustainable goat farm, we also learned about the importance of hard work and dedication to each job at hand. We used teamwork to complete each task and get through the heat and hard work of the day. Once we returned to camp, we enjoyed shredded pork tacos for lunch.

After a rest, we went surfing at Playa Avellanas for two hours. Then we relaxed and ate at Lola’s before heading back to camp. At surfing, most of us had gotten farther out and hit bigger waves. Everyone is getting so much better than the first day of surfing and standing up more on the waves. We had crispy honey chicken with rice for dinner and later discussed vacations and the effects of gentrification in our mentor groups.

¡Buenas noches!

¡Hola de Costa Rica!

Today was an amazing day! We started with a delicious breakfast of French toast. After that, we had a two-hour yoga session with the owner of our home base, Kevin. During yoga, we had some really eye-opening conversations.

For lunch, we enjoyed a tasty Costa Rican dish with chicken and rice. Then, we headed to the Guanacaste Water Center where we learned about sustainable water practices. We had three activities: weeding, replanting, and composting. Alberto and Marcia, the owners, taught us a lot.

In the evening, we had some free time. Some of us relaxed by the pool and played Marco Polo. We ended the day with a dinner of fish and chips and as usual a calm mentor meeting discussing the events of the day.

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 5

Hola 🙂

We woke up at the crack of dawn to get to the catamaran boat. After an hour in the bus, we arrived at a small beach where we were taken by a smaller boat out to the catamaran. We saw 2 humpback whales and a couple dolphins near the shoreline. After a scenic ride, we arrived at our snorkelling spot where we stayed for 2 hours, we had a great time!!

After a short break, we gathered in the studio and we were given a talk on surfing from a professional Costa Rican surfer named Lia. She discussed the hardships she has faced as a professional athlete and how she had persevered through hard times. This conversation was very important for us as a athletes too. Then we watched Brisa Hennessey, the Costa Rican surfer competing in the olympics semi finals.

Some of us then got on the bus and went down to the beach to play some American football and watch the surfers surf. We then came back to a delicious dinner of yuca empanada.

We had an amazing day!!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 6

¡Buenos días families!

We started off our 8th day with some homemade fluffy pancakes. We headed out the door to our last day working at the goat farm, Ranchos Avellanas. We worked on cleaning the goat stables, the compost piles, and weeding the vegetable garden to help the community. While at the goat farm a baby goat was born. The baby goat was not in the best conditions and wasn’t able to latch to its mother. We had to help it get milk from its mother which was a very unique experience.

We came back to home base for Chifrijo and bonding time. After that we had an eye opening discussion with Kevin, the owner of our home base, about understanding who we are and growing as people. We then had an extensive yoga session where we focused on opening our hearts.

For dinner we had Chicken Burgers, and we ended the night with Mentor Groups as a camp and had a talk about sportsmanship. Director Noel shared his journey as an international athlete, where we had open discussions about our opinions.

¡Buenas Noches!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 7

Buenas tardes!

Today we woke up bright and early in order to catch the high tide at Playa Avellanas. We had a light breakfast of fruit and juice before heading out to catch some of our best waves yet. Most of us got to paddle out and take it a step farther by finding and surfing our own waves. A sea turtle named Riley joined us in the waves.

Once we returned we had our real breakfast and then some down time where some of us went in the pool and others napped after our early morning working hard in the ocean. Our director also led a group workout for those who chose to participate. We had a delicious lunch and then free time where we played cards, swam, napped, and showered.

Around 2:00 PM we headed out to the school and worked with Guanacaste Water Center to install a pollinator garden, develop their compost, and plant trees to benefit their education and improve the sustainability of their school. We made iced tea and handed out cookies to the students as they exited school and headed home. They were very excited and it was very nice to connect personally with them.

At home, we showered, had a singalong, and had Arroz con Pollo for dinner. In our mentor groups we learned about pineapple and the terrible pesticides and practices that go into the production here in Costa Rica.

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 8

Greetings from Costa Rica!

We started our day a little later than usual with a crowd favorite French toast! By 8:40 we were in the bus heading to Playa Negra to find micro plastics and anything harmful to the environment with kids from a local school. We were greeted by other fresh fruit and very yummy cookies. After cleanup we played soccer, American football and some beach volleyball. To wrap up our morning at the beach we had a raffle where GLA campers and kids form the school were able to win awesome prizes.

Back at the Peace Retreat for lunch we had crumbed chicken with mash potatoes along with some fresh veggies. At 1:30 we were back on the road off to do service work with the Guanacaste Water Center. We walked through muddy patches seeking places to plant our trees that would help in the reforestation of one of my many forests in Costa Rica. With vibrant vibes and of course the help of some music we were able to plant 33 trees in only 1 1/2 hours. After service we gathered in a circle and shared 5 things we learned.

The bus rides are always the best, and coming back to Peace Retreat earlier than usual meant we had some free time till our 6pm dinner. Some showered or hopped in the pool while others opted for a nap. At 5:45 it was time for the traditional GLA chow circle. Leaders of the day announced dinner which was spaghetti with cheese and yummy bread. Everyone seemed to love this dinner and even the extra portions were gone by the end of it.

To wrap up such an amazing day in mentor groups GLA campers were split into 4 groups and set with the task of creating a presentation on ways to better pineapple production in Costa Rica.

¡Nos vemos mañana!

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 9

Buenas noches familia,

Today was a very exciting day, as it was our last day at Peace Retreat, the place that has hosted us for almost two weeks now.

We started our morning super early leaving for Playa Avellanas with the intention of catching the best waves. We had a delicious breakfast, got ready and headed out. When we got there and started we realized that the ocean was very intense, but it was still a very learning session, because just when we face these types of circumstances in our training is when we learn the most. So we took it positively and it was amazing.

We finished this session on the beach, the sun came out for us, we drank fruit smoothies, looked for beautiful sea shells and rested in front of the Costa Rican Pacific Ocean.

During the afternoon we prepared our luggage, because we are going to leave this Home Base tomorrow morning, and then we went to our last community service session. When we arrived it started to rain very heavily and we had to wait indoors. As soon as the sun rose we got back to work. We were collecting branches for Hugelkultur (bed of branches, leaves and soil to produce compost), we prepared fertilized soil and helped to improve the Guanacaste Water Center facilities.

During the night, thanks to our great effort and resilience, we went to La Esquina again. We had a great time there. Some ate, others bought gifts to take home and we were together.

Finally, back at Home Base, we sang many songs together and went to sleep.

Tomorrow we move to another hotel for our day of adventure. We are very excited.

We will return home soon.

For now,

Pura Vida.

🙂

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 10

Hola family and friends!

We started our day with our last pancake breakfast at Peace Retreat. Then we enjoyed some free time at our favorite hang out spots and had our last mentor group where we talked about our goals for the future. After mentor group, it was time to say our goodbyes to our home base and head to our new hotel for our adventure day.

We boarded the bus and drove to a local souvenir store where we picked up gifts for friends and family and got snacks for the airplane. Then, at our new hotel, we spent the afternoon playing in the pool or resting in our rooms. Dinner and a night hanging out with friends at the Cañon de la Vieja Lodge.

We are very excited for zip lining and tubing tomorrow!

Pura Vida,
GLA Mentor Caitlin

BLOG POST FOR AUGUST 11

Buenas noches familia 🔆

Today we woke up and ate breakfast overlooking the colorado river. After a refreshing meal, we put on closed toed shoes and hit the zip lines. We zipped across trees and gazed below us for the view of Costa Rica’s green and lush forests.

After zipping in the hot sun, we changed into our bathing suits, hopped on a bus, and drove upstream. After strapping our helmets on and getting onto our tubes, we made our way to the river. We flew through the river, slashing and making memories along the way.

We closed our night and program with a circle up allowing us to express our gratitude for the program and grow as individuals.

¡Pura vida mops!

It’s hard to believe that it has already been so long since our time in Costa Rica came to an end. Often, it feels like yesterday that we were working at Rancho Avellanas shoveling goat poop, surfing Avellanas, and enjoying the amazing yucca croquettes at Peace Retreat. We hope that you have all had a great fall starting your next year of high school and continue to think back fondly on the experiences you had in Costa Rica.

We want to take this opportunity to remind you of your hands on work and the great learning opportunities you took advantage of while there:
Gathering sooooo many mangrove seeds along Playa Avellanas with Frank after learning an important lesson about the crucial role mangroves play along the Costa Rican coast.
Turning over the compost beds, weeding the garden beds, cuddling the baby goats, making a bed of branches and planting corn in the huerta with Jean Carlos and Chimichurri at Rancho Avellanas.
Doing such a wide range of projects with Alberto, Luca and the Guanacaste Water Center team at their center, Los Pargos school and Junquillal school – shoveling compost, using the machetes to get some bamboo branches, bagging plants, planting trees, reforesting land for bees to get pollen, fixing bikes, playing basketball, and so much more.
Meeting local community members and participating in a beach cleanup at Playa Negra. And also playing games with the students of the local school Los Pargos.
Learning in depth about Costa Rican culture through its history and dances, ecotourism and sustainable development, environmental problems and struggles, food, the history of its sports, its people, and language.

We are still happy for this group’s hard work that you brought to the program. We look back fondly on the memories of our dance party with DJ Gravity and flipping over while tubing down the river.

And a friendly reminder about the goals that you crafted with your mentor groups at the end of the program:
– Adrián´s group: Be fluent in spanish sophomore college, september 2027-2028.
– Caitlin’s group: In the next year, be more aware of the produce we buy and where it’s produced.
– Tamara’s group: Get out of the comfort zone and meet people in a safe way within the year 2024.

We’d love to hear from you about how you’ve been working on these goals as well as your personal goals! Thank you for helping to make these special memories and the best of luck with improving yourself, your communities, and the communities you explore abroad.

Tuanis,
Mentors Caitlin, Tamara, Adrián

BLOG POST FOR JULY 13

Hola family and friends!

It was an exciting arrival day today for our 27 Surf, Sports, and Sustainability students. Most students arrived in the late morning/early afternoon, and once everyone got settled into their rooms, we got to know our beautiful home base and began to get to know each other.

We enjoyed a delicious family dinner of pesto pasta and chicken with fresh salad. We ended the nights with creating name signs for our rooms and cabins before everyone went to rest up for orientation day.

Stay tuned for more daily updates coming soon from our Leaders of the Day!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 14

Hola family and friends!

We kicked off our first full day with a delicious typical Costa Rican breakfast, a tour of the our amazing home base, Peace Retreat, and practicing our swim skills before surf lessons start tomorrow.

After a lunch of hot dogs and mac n cheese, we learned about Costa Rican culture and got taught some traditional dance moves by one of our amazing mentors, Adrián, and then tried local fruits – cas, starfruit, mamons, dragonfruit, tamarind, and mamon chinos.

The students also met the owner of Peace Retreat, who introduced us to the space and led us in some simple yoga movements as a teaser for his full class later in the program. Then, we got to know the staff and went over the rules for the next two weeks.

In the evening, we loaded up the bus to visit Playa Negra, where students walked along the beach and played a pick up game of soccer.

They wrapped up the day with a dinner of fish and chips and our very first mentor groups. Tomorrow begins surf lessons, local service projects, and blog posts written by our student leaders of the day!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 15

Today was the first day of real activities, yesterday started out as an orientation day and then today we moved to more sports and some service projects. We woke up at 7 am today because breakfast was a little earlier so it was a little bit more adjustment for us.

Throughout the day as a group we had multiple surf lessons which was a bump for a lot of people because it was their first time and it was scary. Today we focused on just getting up on the board and keeping good balance. It was an amazing opportunity to go onto the beach and see the views and we are super excited for the other surf lessons. In the end we pleasantly surprised our instructors and our mentors with our skills in the water.

After lunch, which was quesadillas for today, we went to meet up with Frank at the local school to take a tour and to talk about the environmental problems. It was very powerful to watch the kids run around and see how affected they are by the changes and how we help them. It’s very cool to see how what we are doing influences that much change. We also went on a very sketchy bridge over some mangrove trees. It was definitely a new terrain for us, one that we hadn’t experienced before. We took a walk on the beach and took in the view before getting a cool lesson about the mangrove trees and their effect on the ecosystems on the shoreline and the importance of them being healthy. It was very cool to listen to because we never knew how big of an impact that they actually made. We then had a friendly competition of what team could find the most mangrove seeds. Tiffany’s team took the win with 16.09 pounds of seeds. Frank was going to use those to plant new mangrove trees that could help the ecosystem years in the future. It was a great opportunity for us to learn about the nature and to help out the ecosystem.

At the end of the day we got home to relax and have some spaghetti for dinner, followed by our nightly mentor groups where we discussed our day and played some games. It was a very fun day to kickstart the activities and glance into the future of what we will be doing for the next two weeks.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 16

We started our day bright and early by enjoying some tasty pancakes and eggs. Next, we went to take care of the goats, feeding them and milking them at Rancho Avellanas. We also got to try different kinds of goat cheese and homemade tortillas. Then, we split into two groups for work. One group moved grass to new areas so the goats and pigs could have more food and we could grow corn. The other group worked hard to turn compost to help the environment. It was hot and sweaty but our positive attitudes made the work pass quickly and we felt satisfied with what we achieved.

Later, we visited a local woman who showed us how to make traditional bean and potato empanadas with fresh corn for tortillas. We also played soccer with local kids and had a fun time together. For dinner, we had a yummy chicken burger with potato wedges.
We watched a video about ecotourism, learning how big hotels can harm villages in Costa Rica.

Lucas, Colin, Henry

BLOG POST FOR JULY 17

Hola friends and family!

We started the morning off bright and early to get ready to eat a delicious breakfast. We got on the bus eager to continue our surf expedition. We caught some nice waves and headed to the local beach bar for some cold drinks.

We then boarded the bus to get some lunch that included chicken and potatoes. We then went to the goat farm to do some service for our main man Juan Carlos, the owner of the farm. We moved some compost and shoveled some dirt. We learned that hard work is required to succeed and make a difference in the community. It showed us how hard the local farmers in Costa Rica work for the things they love.

Lastly we headed back to home base to eat some chicken skewers. Furthermore, we met in groups to review the day. Lastly, we had a fun group gathering with music before bed. 🙂

BLOG POST FOR JULY 18

Today we all woke up early to go on the catamaran. For breakfast, we had breakfast burritos that we ate on the bus. The ride there was packed with excitement. We saw a beautiful islands. When we got there, we snorkel and saw schools of fish along with dozens of sea urchins. Then we have lunch that consisted of pasta, chips, salsa, a sandwich, and a cookie. The ride back it was much calmer. We also ended up seeing dolphins. Overall, the trip was packed with fun times, fascinating views, and a calming finish.

As our afternoon activity, an ex-professional surfer, and current amateur MMA fighter Aldo came as a guest speaker to talk to us about the importance of sports in Costa Rica and an overview of his life story. He covered his adolescence and house surfing came about in his life, he covered travelling to different countries often and the importance of your family, friends, and lifestyle at home, he covered why he quit surfing to move towards MMA, and lastly, gave a summary of the significance of sports and Costa Rican culture and economy.

After the guest speaker, Noel led an enjoyable but difficult stretching, and workout session for the whole group.

At night after having a great workout, we had yucca croquettes as dinner. The food is typical in Costa Rica and is made with cheese, pork and beans, it was the best food we have eaten so far. The group is just now getting closer. We had an amazing time guided by Jun with James, Daniel, Ashton, Teddy, Cole and Jagger listening to Brazilian Funk. In addition to it, mentor group with Adrian was extremely fun because we played a game using soccer balls.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 19

Hey, today is the 6th day in Costa Rica and we started off the morning with a lie in and a short breakfast before we headed to surfing. The instructors helped us out getting waves as they were slightly bigger than usual today. After that we spent an hour at the beach bar relaxing before heading back to Peace Retreat. We showered off and had lunch before getting ready to go to service.

After lunch we went to guanacosta water center where we met the people that work there. They introduced us to their facilities and what we would be doing for the next few hours. We did a lot of work around the property including digging mulch and planting seeds. After a good couple hours of work we went to learn more about what they do. We split into groups and learned about them and how their works helps. After learning about them they told us how we would be working the next few days planting trees. We then left on the bus and returned for a very good dinner.

After we ate some crispy honey chicken for dinner, then we went to a local event with live music, restaurants, and some shops with bracelets and necklaces. We hung out with the locals, and got to know some of the culture outside of GLA. After we hung out at the event we went home and got ready for bed.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 20

Today we woke up for an early breakfast at 6:45 and we had pancakes with eggs. After breakfast, we all got on the bus and went to our first service of the day, which was at Rancho Avellanas.

The group separated into three different job categories such as shoveling compost, working with baby goats, and planting trees. It was really hot day but we preserved and got through the first service. Saying goodbye was hard and we will miss the work we were given but we have other projects to begin.

We then headed back for lunch and had tacos, and got some time to rest and prepare for the second project. We then headed to our 2nd service project of the day where we help a water conservation team. We split up into different groups to conquer different tasks. One group cleared out logs making an ecosystem for insects and animals to live in. The second group prepared our plants for our planting tomorrow.

After service we got to visit and local supermarket and play basketball with our service leaders. When we arrived home we had time to clean up before dinner where we had pesto pasta with chicken where after we ended the day with a big mentor group session. We did a group activity and then headed off to bed.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 21

Hi,

We started the day with an experience we’ve never had before, today we had a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience a yoga class with the retreat owner Kevin. It was not like a normal yoga class. This class focused less on stretching the body and more on stretching the walls and limits of our mind. Everyone came out a different person than they were going in to it.

Following up with that we had a great lunch featuring quesadillas, followed up with a nice little break before heading onto our next new adventure that we haven’t experienced yet, the bee farm. On this trip, we learn to plant trees and while doing so we were also faced with a challenge of being near dangerous entries around the entire farm, which was a hurdle we had to overcome. We planted 60 trees today.

After the three hours and 30 minutes of service, we then went and drove back to HB where we had dinner featuring chicken and rice, a cultural meal in Costa Rica, followed up by a great mentor session which taught us about pineapples and the manufacturing of them, as well as agricultural overall Costa Rica and the dangers of pesticides.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 22

Today breakfast was French toast with fruit which was delicious. After breakfast we participated in a community beach cleanup at Playa Negra with Los Pargos Elementary School. The beach cleanup was very nice since it was a sunny day outside. Surprisingly, there was not a lot of trash on the beach when we expected way more. However there was quite a bit of microplastic that we had to carefully collect. We ended the cleanup with an educational talk about recycling as well as playing sports with the children. After that we went back to homebase for lunch.

For lunch today there was chicken with rice and beans. Sadly the second half of the day it was pouring rain. But that didn’t stop us from continuing our journey. We went to a school where we helped fix local kids bikes and played with them. We also made juggling balls with them, which was very fun to learn how to juggle altogether. This was our last service so it was bittersweet, however overall we can really see the benefits of our efforts on the local area and communities.

Tonight for dinner we had fish and chips. During our mentor groups, we had to make presentations on the effects of pineapple farming within Costa Rica. Some presentations included dancing and music, whereas others were rap and acting. We learnt a lot from this about how a single fruit like the pineapple can have such a devastating impact.

Hola family and friends!

Today was a very bright day with no clouds in the sky we got to sleep in for an hour and eat breakfast at 9:00 am. We had scrambled eggs with beans and rice for breakfast. Later in the morning it was blazing hot but we still persevered and did yoga in the yoga room with Kevin.

For lunch today we had chifrijo. After our delicious lunch we went to surf at Playa Avellanas. The waves were great as it rained the day before. We had a great time surfing for the last time on this trip. It was a bittersweet goodbye. When we finished surfing we got food and drinks at Lola’s restaurant.

During the evening, we gathered for a delicious meal featuring chicken burgers. The savory aroma filled the air as we assembled around the table, chatting and laughing together. After finishing our meal, we headed over to our mentor group session.

It was a productive meeting where we shared our thoughts and experiences, discussed our goals, and supported one another in achieving them. The combination of good food and meaningful conversation made for an enjoyable and fulfilling night.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 24

Hola family and friends!

Today our well laid plan was to eat breakfast and then take off for our new hotel. Unfortunately, several members of our group came down with a stomach bug so the entire group showed their flexibility and patience all day as the team worked to get everyone feeling better.

In the morning, most students hung out by the pool and played games at our beautiful home base, Peace Retreat, while the others visited a local clinic. By the afternoon, the group was well enough to get on the buses and head to Cañon de la Vieja, where we will be having our adventure activities.

After a delicious buffet dinner at the hotel, the group had time to hang out by the pool. And fortunately, by the end of the night every member of our group was on the mend.

We are excited for rest, tubing, and ziplining tomorrow!

GLA Mentor Caitlin

Please forgive us for the lack of photos! It was a chaotic day for all, but photos of adventure day to come 🙂

BLOG POST FOR JULY 25

For the last time – hola family and friends from Costa Rica!

This morning we had breakfast and headed off to zip line through the trees and over the river of Rincón de la Vieja. After the canopy tour, we grabbed inner tubes and glided down the river. Everyone had a blast in the rapids even if they flipped over a time or two.

After our adventure activities, we had lunch and headed to a local souvenir store for shopping and ice cream. Later, students relaxed in the hot springs before getting dressed up for our final group dinner.

To wrap up the night and this amazing trip, we had a closing circle where everyone shared their first impressions of the trip and how they changed over time.

Tomorrow will be bittersweet as everyone says goodbye to their new friends and heads home to their families.

Hola chicos!

It’s hard to believe that it has already been so long since our time in Costa Rica came to an end. Often, it feels like yesterday that we were working at Rancho Avellanas shoveling goat poop, surfing Avellanas, and enjoying the amazing club sandwiches at Peace Retreat. We hope that you have all had a great fall starting your next year of high school and that you have all stayed connected and continue to think back fondly on the experiences you had in Costa Rica.

We want to take this opportunity to remind you of your amazing work and the great learning opportunities you took advantage of while there:

Turning over the compost beds, weeding the garden beds, and planting new plants in the huerta with Jean Carlos and Luca at Rancho Avellanas

Doing such a wide range of projects with Marcia and the Guanacaste Water Center team at their center and the Los Pargos school – making raised garden beds from bamboo, bagging plants, planting trees, moving heavy pieces of wood, pulling out and replanting grass, removing invasive species, installing signs by local waterways, and so much more

Meeting local community members and participating in a beach cleanup at Playa Negra

Learning in depth about Costa Rican culture through its history and dances, ecotourism and sustainable development, environmental problems and struggles, food, the history of its sports, its people, and language.

We are still so grateful for this group’s incredible positivity and hard work ethic that you brought to each and every service project, no matter how difficult. We were also very impressed by the way you continually checked in on each other, took every situation in stride, and made lasting relationships. We look back fondly on the memories of our catamaran dance party, 4th of July celebration, and flipping over while tubing down the river.

And a friendly reminder about the goals that you crafted with your mentor groups at the end of the program:

– Adrián’s group: Improve our performance and consistency in sports through summer 2025

– Caitlin’s group: Eat and buy food more sustainably with more awareness (this goal was focused on the rest of the summer but I hope you keep it in mind during the winter months as well!)

– Tamara’s group: Remain positive through difficult situations (just as you did while you where in Costa Rica!)

We’d love to hear from you about how you’ve been working on these goals as well as your personal goals! Thank you for helping to make these special memories and the best of luck with improving yourself, your communities, and the communities you explore abroad.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 28

Hola from Costa Rica! 🇨🇷

Blessed with a sunny morning, the group spent la mañana surfing from 8:30-10 at Playa Avellanas. We had lessons from the local surf school. After surfing, we enjoyed local empanadas and virgin piña coladas.

Crafted from our wonderful chefs, we chowed down on some chicken, bean, and guacamole quesadillas for lunch. We continued our day walking through local mangroves, persevering through torrential downpour, learning the 5 types of mangroves (white, black, red, button, and salty stick) and cleaning micro plastics as we went!

We learned that the mangrove trees sacrifice one leaf to absorb salt, turning it yellow. We ate a green leaf and a yellow leaf, comparing the salinity of both. After collecting mangrove seeds we headed back to camp for mentor groups and Indian curry dinner.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 29

Today we originally planned on going to a goat farm and doing cooking lessons and community work. Instead, after lots of rain, our plans got canceled due to flooding.

So in place of the original plans we did a workout class with Noel and a cultural dance lesson with our Costa Rican native mentor Adrian. Everyone had a fun time and we leven earned some new songs in different languages.

After, we chilled out at the pool and on the hammocks until we had delicious Casado for lunch ( a typical Costa Rican dish). As our afternoon activity we had a yoga class led by Kevin, the owner of the retreat. The lesson was extremely informative and deep, and caused many thoughts about who we are as a person. We learned how to better express ourselves as who we want to be.

After yoga, we went to a market and bought some tasty treats. When we returned, we enjoyed a delicious dinner of chicken burgers with potatoes, followed by watching a documentary. The documentary was a good representation of the plight that tourists bring to the natives of Costa Rica. Due to them causing inflation on real estate prices and driving out the locals from their own homes.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 30

Waking up before the sun might sound like a challenge, but in Costa Rica, it’s a way to truly experience the natural beauty and serenity of the early morning. By 5:45 am, our group was already wide awake, their excitement palpable in the cool, predawn air. With surfboards in hand, we headed down to the beach, ready to greet the day in the most exhilarating way possible – by catching the perfect wave.

After the morning surf session, it was time to transition from the beach to the farm. As a group we traded our surfboards for gloves and bags, ready to tackle their next task: cleaning up the farm. At the goat farm we picked up and turned over compost and milked the goats udders. This wasn’t just any farm; it was a prize winning sustainable community space that provides fresh produce and a sense of purpose for the locals. Our group’s mission was to help maintain its cleanliness and beauty, and spread the message of the importance of sustainability.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 1

Hola!

Today we went back to Rancho Avellanas, a goat farm, where we did some hard work like shoveling manure and taking care of gardens. It wasn’t glamorous, but we had fun together, laughing and helping each other out. We learned how important farming is and how it helps the environment.

After that, we made tortillas, a kind of tasty food, together. Then, we worked hard rolling dough and filling it with yummy ingredients. It was a true emersion into Costa Rican culture as made the food with a local woman at her house. Later, some boys played soccer in a field nearby, enjoying each other’s company and having a good time. It was a day full of learning, teamwork, and making great memories.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 2

Our bright and early wake up was at around 6:30 in the morning. To start off the day we had an amazing and nutritional breakfast consisting of cereal and assorted fruits. After our meal we headed over to the beach to start off our early morning surf lessons. The waves were stunning today and we all enjoyed the experience. Our surfing was topped off with some piña coladas and empanadas from the local beach restaurant and empanada man. Then we headed back to a lunch of fish and rice which was a hit with everyone.

Directly after lunch, we had a group meeting to clear things up then we hopped on the bus and traveled to Guanacaste Water Center, where we did service such as planting trees, building plant beds, and having an overall fantastic time! We learned so much from Marcia and got to learn about the work that’s done there. To finish off the day, we had a delicious meal of crispy honey chicken at home base followed by a fun and creative mentor group activity. We’re all doing great and are so excited for the second half of our experience.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 3

Hola friends and family!

We started off our day early with a catamaran boat ride where we sailed for 30 minutes until we got off. Once we got off we had the options to either snorkel, kayak, paddle board, or just lay out in the water. People that went snorkeling got the chance to see different kinds of fish, mainly puffer fish. Once we got back in from the water we were served a lunch full of pasta, burritos, chips and salsa and cookies. After we ate everyone in the boat joined in the back and we had a fun dance party and had good vibes all around.

At home base a guest speaker, Aldoo, visited us and gave us a presentation where he talked about his life surfing and transition into MMA fighting, along with some yoga and stretches at the end. Then we had dinner and ended our day with a mentor group activity and we presented our ideas on how to develop different sports we would like to go pro in in different countries while impacting those in the countries positively.

Today we woke up at 8 am which meant we got to
sleep in a bit later than usual, which was nice. We ate a traditional American breakfast which was eggs, potatoes, and bread. Our first activity of the day was cleaning up the local beach of Playa Negrq.

For the second portion of the day we worked hard on projects with the Guanacaste Water Center at a local school. They consisted of planting new trees and plants, recycling old bottles and cans as an effort to help raise money for the school, and finally, moving big logs and sticks to help create a type of fertilized soil.

To wrap up the day, we had a nice celebration for the 4th of July starting with a dinner of hotdogs and mac n cheese with a cake for dessert. The most exciting activity so far has been the part of the day was the festivities after dinner with included games and dancing.

Today was very exciting and educational. We spent most of the day doing community service which felt very fulfilling and heart warming. Over all the highlight of the day was the community service and the 4th of July celebrations.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 5

Hola family and friends!

Today was a wonderful day in Guanacaste. This morning, breakfast was at 7, and we all enjoyed delicious frittatas. We left at 7:30 to arrive at Rancho Avallanas to do our first service project of the day. It was bright and sunny out, and we spent our time switching off in groups digging moats and holes for plants, and then putting compost on them and planting them. It was really satisfying to see the work that we’ve done and the garden that we’d finished from scratch.

We left the ranch at 11, and had chicken Casado for lunch all together. Then we met the Guanacaste water center to plant trees, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed and had a great attitude about. First we dug up the grass then put soil and compost on it, then planted the seeds and lined the plot of land with grass.

We went back to Homebase and hung out by the pool until we had Indian curry for dinner. It was fantastic. Then we had mentor groups all together where we talked about the dangers of the production of pineapples in Costa Rica.

Today was amazing, pura vida mae!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 6

Breakfast was at 7:00 in the morning. It was Huevos Rancheros. Half an hour later, we were on the bus to our last service of the trip. It was at the Guanacaste Water Center. Some people made soil, some planted signs, and others sorted plants/grasses. It wasn’t just us helping, we teamed up with a couple of local high school students. After everyone had finished, we all moved bamboo from the roadside because the Center needed it for their next project. The owner of the Center (Marcia) sold some of her honey to us. The money from the honey sales will be used to buy seeds for reforestation.

We returned for lunchtime where we enjoyed Chifrijo. Up next was yoga with the owner of the Peace Retreat (Kevin). We talked about listening and how it’s connected to your back. He taught us how everything was connected and how much listening/not listening affects people. After the amazing yoga session it was surfing time. The waves were big and rough but it didn’t stop us. Everyone seemed to have a great time.

Then for the last meal of the day it was Chicken Burgers. Everyone enjoyed it. For the final event of the day it was mentor groups. Each group was assigned a different topic about pineapple production. (Environmental groups, consumers, and farmers.) Each group researched their topic and presented it to the others. Tonight we have to pack our stuff because we are leaving to another place for the rest of the trip. Overall, we’ve all enjoyed our stay at the Peace Retreat.

BLOG POST FOR JULY 7

Hola friends and family!

This morning we packed up all of our things and moved out of our rooms and cabins to get ready for our adventure excursion. Before saying goodbye to our beautiful home base, Peace Retreat, we watched a movie and had one of our favorite lunches again – club sandwiches with pesto.

After lunch we gave thanks to the amazing staff at Peace Retreat and then got on the buses for a 2 hour drive to our first stop for souvenir shopping. Unfortunately, the 2 hour drive turned into 4 due to traffic on the roads, but both buses kept up the positive vibes with singing, dancing, naps, and lively conversations.

At the souvenir store we bought keepsakes and plane snacks, and then got back on the road to go to our new hotel. When we arrived, we had a great group dinner and mentor group where we went back over the goals we set at the beginning of the trip.

We’re super excited for ziplining and tubing tomorrow!

BLOG POST FOR JULY 8

¡Buenas!

Today was our final full day in Costa Rica and our adventure day. We kicked off the morning with a buffet breakfast before having a blast on the ziplining course. People faced their fears and zoomed through the canyon and over the river.

Then we put on our swimsuits and headed down to the river to tube through the rapids. Even though some flipped over or got stuck on rocks, everyone had so much fun flying through the water.

In the afternoon, we had lunch, played in the pool, and soaked in the hot springs at our hotel. In the evening, everyone dressed up nice for our final dinner, which we enjoyed before our final circle together as a group. It was heartwarming for all to see how close this group got and the meaningful relationships they got to make over the last two weeks.

I am sure that tomorrow will be bittersweet as everyone says their goodbyes to their new friends and returns to their families.

Costa Rica: Surf, Sports & Sustainability (June 10 – June 23, 2024)

PROGRAM PHOTO ALBUM
TIME CAPSULE LETTER

Hola chicos!

It’s hard to believe that it has already been so long since our time in Costa Rica came to an end. Often, it feels like yesterday that we were working at Rancho Avellanas in the pouring rain, surfing Avellanas, and enjoying so many Peace Retreat burritos (and Chase’s favorite – the ice cream!). I hope that you have all had a great fall starting your next year of high school (or in Kyle’s case, having a great first semester at UTI!!) and that you have all stayed connected and continue to think back fondly on the experiences you had in Costa Rica.

I want to take this opportunity to remind you of your amazing work and the great learning opportunities you took advantage of while there:

Gathering mangrove seeds and collecting trash along Playa Avellanas with Frank after learning an important lesson about the crucial role mangroves play along the Costa Rican coast

Beautifying the chicken coop, weeding the garden in the pouring rain, and mucking out goat stalls at Rancho Avellanas (Shout out to Charlie, Chase, Jackson, and Michael for venturing out through the “lakes” to the compost beds!)

Planting trees, clearing out beds, and getting mangoes for the kids (shout out to Michael!) at Los Pargos School, learning about non-violent communication, collecting mangoes for Tom, installing signs by local waterways, and repairing bicycles with the Guanacaste Water Center

Meeting local community members and participating in a beach cleanup at Playa Negra

I was impressed by your group’s ability to work hard and persevere through illnesses, injuries (I’m still so proud of Ella for pushing through and surfing even with her foot pain!), rain, and a few scorpions. I loved leading mentor group each night and hearing the insights that each of you had after each day. My favorite part about this group, though, was how close you all were. It was so impressive to watch you all come together in a matter of hours and remain close over the entire two weeks. It made all of us so happy to see you push tables together to eat together, capture the experience in such a fun way (shout out to our resident photographer Jane!), spend each night hanging out until the last possible minute, and work through problems that arose with maturity and open communication. Even though the closeness of the group led to many negotiations with us (shout out to Molly and Charlie for representing the group interests!), we enjoyed seeing you work together so well.

And a friendly reminder of not just the personal goals that we talked about toward the end of the program, but also our group goal to travel more sustainably. I hope we’re all following Regan’s suggestion to stop flying private 😉 But seriously, I hope that you kept this goal in mind on your summer travels and will continue to make more sustainable choices as ski season approaches.

We’d love to hear from you about how you’ve been working on this goal and your personal goals! Thank you for helping to make these special memories and the best of luck with improving yourself, your communities, and the communities you explore abroad.

Pura Vida,

Mentor Caitlin and the Surf, Sports, and Sustainability Team

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 10

Hola family and friends!

It was an exciting arrival day today for our ten Surf, Sports, and Sustainability students. Seven students arrived in the early afternoon, and one everyone got settled into their rooms, we got to know our beautiful home base and played games to get to know each other.

After spotting a howler monkey, we enjoyed a delicious family dinner of pesto pasta and chicken with fresh salad. We ended the nights with games of UNO before everyone went to rest up for orientation day.

Our other 3 students went on an adventure to San Jose after their flight to Liberia was redirected due to lots of rain on the runway. They had a long journey by bus to Guanacaste, but they arrived safe and sound in the early hours of the morning. We’re so glad that all 10 students are here and ready for two weeks of service and adventure.

Stay tuned for more daily updates coming soon from our Leaders of the Day!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 11

Hola family and friends!

Our students had an informative first full day at our beautiful home base. We kicked off the day with games to get everyone moving and learn more about each other before practicing our swim skills for our surf lessons tomorrow.

After a lunch of quesadillas that was very popular with the group, we learned about Costa Rican culture from our amazing Local Director Tiffany and tried local fruits – mamon, jocote, dragonfruit, and guava. Then they collectively drew a mural about all of the fun facts about Costa Rica and things they’re excited to see and experience during the program.

In the evening, we loaded up the bus to visit Playa Negra, where students walked along the beach, played volleyball, and cracked open some coconuts to try the water inside.

They wrapped up the day with a dinner where they insisted on squeezing in together at one table so they could eat as a full group. We pushed tables together after so they’ll be able to eat as one big team the entire session.

Tomorrow begins surf lessons and local service projects!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 12

Hola friends and family!

The group kicked off the day early with breakfast burritos that everyone loved. Then we went straight to our surf lessons on Playa Avellanas. After meeting the instructors, going over safety, and learning how to stand up on the board, we hit the waves! Every member of the group managed stand up on the board and ride waves.

After an hour and a half of successful surfing, we enjoyed time on the beach and drinking delicious fresh smoothing.

For lunch, we tried a typical Costa Rican “Casado” dish with rice, beans, plantains, chicken, veggies.

After some rest, we started our service projects for the day with a tour of a local school where we got to see service projects completed by former GLA students. Then we walked through a huge mangrove forest, learned about these important trees, and had a competition to see if the boys or the girls could collect more trash and mangrove seeds from the beach (the boys collected more trash and the girls collected more seeds!).

Tomorrow we’re excited to visit a local goat farm and learn about the projects they do there.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 13

Hola family and friends!

We began our day bright and early with an “American” breakfast of eggs and potatoes before leaving for Rancho Avellanas, a local sustainable goat farm. There, we had a tour of there farm and got to see many parts of the production of goat products. We fed older goats leaves as a snack, got to bottle feed the babies, and some of us tried milking a goat. After seeing the process, we got to try goat feta cheese, goat cheese, and goat milk yogurt with local honey.

Then we began our service project: cleaning and sanding the outside walls of the farm’s chicken coop so that we can paint it bright colors tomorrow.

In the afternoon, we took a walk from our Home Base to Playa Negra to hang out on the beach and in the water. Fortunately, after it began raining, our amazing driver Henry was already there to pick us up.

We ended the day with a game of 20 questions in the pool, chicken burgers for dinner, mentor group, and hanging out in our favorite spot by the hammocks.

We are excited to get back to surf lessons tomorrow!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 14

Hola friends and family!

Today we traveled to Playa Avellanas for a morning surf and there was a very strong wave current that was pulling us South. However, our surf instructors came prepared and were able to successfully find us good waves to surf. After our morning surf session we headed a local market y compramos dulces.

After acquiring sustenance, we returned to Rancho Avellanas, a local sustainable goat farm, and finished our paint job on the chicken coop. It felt like it was 100 degrees, even in the absurd heat and humidity we were able to sand and finish the chicken coop. We then wrapped up with a game of soccer in the rain. As a reward for our hard work we went to a local hangout area where we listened to live music and immersed ourselves in the local culture. We were able to practice our spanish with locals. We then finished off our day with a mentor group.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 15

¡Buenas!

Today was our final day at Rancho Avellanas. After being fueled by some delicious burritos, we were prepared to take on the false coral snakes that invaded the garden we were weeding. After clearing away half of the weeds, it started to rain gatos y perros and we had to go inside. We played an intense game of zip zap zoom as we waited for the rain to calm down. Once it cleared a bit we headed towards the goat stables where we cleared out old rocks and prepared them with fresh wood chips for the coming pregnant goats. We had to wheel the excess contents in a wheel barrel through rivers and lakes to the other side of the farm. Our shoes were no longer recognizable however we had a great time running through the muddy puddles and helping out the farm.

After a chilly bus ride home listening to the Beatles and Train, we arrived to a tangy ceviche for lunch. Now energized, we were ready to dive into the Costa Rican culture and learn how to make authentic empanadas from a local “Tica”. We had an enriching experience and everyone felt fulfilled both mentally and physically (after some amazing food).

We said our “gracias”’s and our “adios”’s and headed out to the market. We were welcomed in by an upbeat marimba and many smiling faces. Through a game created by our mentors, we were able to really engage with the local vendors and practice our spanish speaking skills. We arrived back at the Home Base to a delicious ramen dinner and spent the rest of our night bonding at our favorite spot: the hammocks. We had a super great first week of our trip and can’t wait to experience the country further!

Hasta Luego!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 16

Hola family and friends!

The boys amazed by making it to breakfast on time, where we had corn flakes and delicious watermelon. Then, we headed to our third surf lesson of the program. The weather was a bit gloomy, but we still managed to catch some olas. After surfing, we got refreshed with some fresh fruit smoothies.

The club sandwiches we had for lunch were definitely enjoyed by all. On our way to afternoon service, we jammed out to nostalgic music. Then we arrived at the Guanacaste Water Center, a local organization focused on water conservation.

There, even though it was pouring rain, we got to learn about our upcoming service projects. We learned the names of different bike parts in Spanish in preparation for a bicycle repair project with local children later in the week. We learned a lot about how water travels and the impacts of pollution and development on waterways.

We are pumped for our adventure day on the catamaran tomorrow. Shout out to all of our amazing fathers.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 17

Hola!

Today our group had our first adventure day! After an hour drive, our group hopped on “The Lazy Lizard” – a 38ft catamaran that we spent the morning on. We all sat at the bow (front) of the ship, listened to music, and saw beautiful Costa Rica from a different perspective.

We anchored at “Honeymoon Beach” and despite the hard rains, had a great time swimming, jumping off the stern of the ship, and venturing onto the beach. We ate a quick lunch of burritos, fruit, pasta salad, etc before heading back towards shore!

After spending some time back at home base, guest speaker Andrea Diaz, a professional surfer from Costa Rica, came to speak about her experiences with the sport as well as her nonprofit organization (Surf4Youth) which helps at-risk youth escape the cycle of poverty through surfing.

Additionally, today was Tiffany’s birthday! After dinner we all celebrated her birthday with a delicious cake and ice cream.

We’re excited for yoga with the owner of our home base tomorrow morning!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 18

Hola!

Today our group slept in and played cards before breakfast. Then Kevin, the owner of our Home Base, lead us in a moving Yoga practice that he started off with the story of his inspirational life journey. We had the best 5 minute nap in shavasana to end our practice.

After a relaxing lunch at home base, this afternoon we went to the local school with the Guanacaste Water Center and helped sort their recycling, planted trees, fertilized the soil, and played with the kids. We met lots of great local kids and had fun playing a pickup soccer game with them and getting to know them all.

We’re excited to hang out with the locals at the beach clean up event tomorrow morning!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 19

Hola family and friends!

We started our day at 8 —slightly later than usual—with delicious egg frittatas filled with potatoes, chicken, and veggies. After breakfast, we headed to Playa Negra for a quick beach cleanup with local community leaders. Although the rain kept the local school kids away from the beach, we all worked hard to clear the trash and plastic from the beautiful shore.

Post cleanup, we visited the local school, meeting back up with the children, to help the students sort the collected plastic into three groups: grande, medio, and pequeña. After the plastic was all sorted we had a great time playing many games with the students including an exciting twist on rock-paper-scissors with the kids.

Back at home base, we enjoyed our favorite lunch: chicken, rice, and cheese quesadillas—a perfect 10/10! After lunch, we quickly set off for the Guanacaste Water Center. There, we picked mangos off trees and also from the ground to help a local named Tom. We also prepared signs to raise awareness about local watersheds, which we then installed around the community.

On our way back, we stopped at a local supermercado for snacks before heading home for dinner, which was a delightful Indian curry that gave us a break from the usual Costa Rican cuisine. We wrapped up our day discussing local farming issues and different organic strategies. We are excited for our last day of surfing and service tomorrow before heading off for our final excursion.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 20

Hola!

We got up early this morning to have a special bonus yoga class with Kevin, the owner of our home base. Then we got to visit a local cafe, fueling up on caffeine and croissants. We then continued our surfing conquest and ventured into the depths of the ocean. Everyone caught great waves and we eneded our final surfing lesson on a great note.

After surfing we came back to home base and had some delicious casado with rice, beans, plantains, and chicken. We then headed to a local elemetary school and repaired and maintained their bicycles – we gave them a nice wash, fixed issues with the bikes, and added stickers to them.

We also practiced our spanish, played soccer, and made snow cones with the local children. After this long afternoon, we finished the night off with birria tacos.

We are sad to say goodbye to our beautiful home base tomorrow, but we’re excited to see our new hotel and have some jungle adventures.

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 21

¡Hola hola!

Today was our big travel day! We started the day off with some delicious banana pancakes which fueled us for our day. We made the impulse decision to go to the beach after seeing the sun for the first time and had a great time. We got some good vitamin D, enjoyed some fruit smoothies and enjoyed our final time by the salty blue water.

After the beach, we headed back to Peace Retreat where we devoured the infamous burritos and finished packing up our stuff. We said our farewells to our favorite hangout spot, the hammocks, and after reminiscing on our good times spent there, we packed up the bus, and got to driving.

In total the drive took about 3 hours but it was nothing short of entertaining. By now, we have asked each other every question that exists yet we still kept conversing the whole trip. After making a quick stop at El Jardín, a tourist trap, we added many cositas into our already full luggage and kept traveling.

We arrived to our next home base for the next 3 days and got settled in with a traditional Costa Rican dinner. Estamos entusiasmados for our many excursions on our last day of our trip.

¡Hasta manaña!

BLOG POST FOR JUNE 22

Hola!

We started off the morning with an early 6am wake up and a delicious homemade breakfast at Hotel Wilson. Then we headed off on Henry’s bus to Hacienda Guachipelín.

We began our adventure day with a relaxing hike through the forest to the Red Pond where some of us swam in a cold and very clear river. Upon our return walk back to the base we prepared for zip lining and got all suited up in our harnesses and helmets. We then took a conopy zip line tour which included many zip lines (some upside down), rock climbing, and a giant swing!

We fueled up with a quick snack break before continuing on with our adventures for the day. We took a short hike to a sacred ground where we participated in a relaxing and meditative exercise with gorgeous views of the surrounding volcanoes. We all felt very relaxed and refreshed, and ready to take on our next adventure, tubing!

We changed into swim suits and took a short bus ride to the river head. We grabbed our life vests, took a few pictures, and hit the rapids. We enjoyed the thrill of getting stuck on rocks, getting flipped over and out of our tubes, and even sightings of HUGE spiders. The group grew even stronger together when they attempted to hold hands throughout the rapids. This effort did not end as successfully as the group hoped, but we stayed together through all the flips and turns and spiders!

We enjoyed a buffet style american lunch. Shortly after, we headed to the hot springs where we enjoyed multiple hot springs of a wide variety of temperatures. Unfortunately the camera died so we couldn’t capture the sheer joy on our faces through swimming in the river, the mud bath, and the actual hot springs. We made our way through a couple until we settled on the coolest pool at 98°F after not lasting long in the others which were up to 114°F. We were sad to go, but quickly changed so we didn’t get Henry’s bus wet!

Lastly, to end our adventure day, the group enjoyed a tasty final dinner which included salad, sausages, hamburgers, carne, and the classic rice and beans. We negotiated for an exciting excursion after dinner where we headed to a local ice cream shop. We had our final mentor group when we returned to the hotel. It was very bittersweet! We have our last hangout time tonight and we will say our goodbyes early tomorrow morning.

We have had such a great time, learned so much, and made so many new friends over these past two weeks! Saying goodbye will be difficult tomorrow but we hope to stay in touch! We truly appreciate everything that Costa Rica has had to offer.

Pura Vida!
